Hi everyone. What do you think of this idea, I know it's a bit left field but we have something that hasn't yet been discovered it seems so let's have a go at finding a possible answer.

The closest thing I can find on mine and others symptoms is something called Sinus barotrauma.

How does it happen? Pressure changes when diving cause barotrauma. During descent, air spaces in the sinuses and middle ear must be able to equalize to the surrounding water pressure, which increases with depth. When pressure in air spaces can't equalize, the diver may sense pressure or pain from one of these areas. During ascent, if the expanding air can't be vented, the cavity pressure increases, resulting in discomfort. This type of injury can range in severity - from mild to extreme.

Yes I know this happens because you are under water but the air expanding in the sinus cavities seems to be what is happening to us. Could something have happened which hampers our bodies reaction to pressure changes?

I know when I pop my ears it relieves the pressure feeling for a few minutes which could be related.

    What do you think?

That makes a lot of sense except I haven't been under water since last summer so I don't get why I'd be getting the symptoms now

Neither have I but for some reason it actually feels like I'm living under water. When I walk up stairs I can feel the pressure build up, same when I bend over. It's as if my body has lost the ability to sense outside and inside pressure. I read somewhere that you can have a blocked cavity without having sinusitus. I've had an MRI scan which showed no sinus problems but it might not be able to pick up on trapped air?

I think we should definitely arrange something, some kind of meet at a neutral place in the UK. Maybe come up wiht some ideas for getting research. Anything has to be better than suffering with it! I for one cannot put up with this for the rest of my life and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere sad

Yeah mate that would be good idea pool our symptoms together etc and see what we can come up with.

      I'd be up for that.

I've just come back from a head massage, been trying a few things including acupuncture.

She did this ethmoid type pressure point thing and it def seemed to do something. It certainly seemed to help with my eyes and head feels slightly better. I'm going to persist for a few more sessions, had about 6 now. Mine def feels like trapped air in ethmoid sinus that isn't pressurising with outside so causing a pressure build up.

As much as it sound such a simple diagnosis I think it's all to do with our sinus coz all things seem to point to that in some way.

Has to be trapped air. If air doesn't circulate properly it pressurised and expand as it cannot regulate with the air outside. Same principle as when a diver goes under the water. I'm sat down and don't feel much pressure but if I got up walked around and bent down I would feel pressure behind the bridge of my nose, that's where ethmoid sinus cavities are. Any idea when or how yours came about?

Not sure mate when it came around I have suffered with it all my life but never experienced the pain And feelings I have the last two years. It could be that because not been treated properly or even diagnosed by doctors all they have done for me is nasal spray and de congestion tablets none work. Nasal spray smells like cats urine being shot up your nose but to no avail nothing works.

Hi mate. How does your head feel when you exercise?

When I try to do anything physical eg bike ride, run, weights, I can feel the pressure building up and I can terrible headaches. I only walk for exercise at the moment.

Not sure if I've asked you this but I find if I hold my nostrils and blow through my nose it pops my ears and that relieves the pressure slightly. That's why I think it's a build up of air pressure.

I am intrigued by the air/sinus idea, but I am not sure it explains the neck pain or nausea. I once drove across the Rockies (I am in the US) into Reno, Nevada and a bag of chips in my truck exploded because of the pressure. On the way back, I experienced this incredible facial pain that reminded me of the chip bag exploding...I felt like my skull was going to burst open right there. Upon descent, it improved. I only experienced this once or twice on a flight, but not as severe. And I do have constant cracking and popping in my ears which I have just gotten used to over the years. I have done lots of acupuncture and moxibustion which helped a migraine once, but not these symptoms at all. I really hate the idea of taking amitryptiline, I guess another med just makes me nervous. I already take Wellbutrin and Vyvanse for Adult ADD, but I am considering going off the Wellbutrin because I do not think it is so effective for me anymore, though I don't relish the idea of a new med and new side effects. Anyone get relief from amitrytiline and with what side effects? I heard it can make you very sleepy, which I can't have! I'm a college professor starting a new postion and I am wary of adding too many new things to the mix, though the pressure and dizziness are almost impossible to ignore. Chiropractic work for anyone?

      Hi shari,

I'm on amtryptiline and your right it does make you dosey but that's why it says to take one at night. Took my first one last night from a repeat perscription and this morning I felt great so looks like it works for me don't have any side effects apart from feeling a bit tired and taking naproxen with them makes a heap of difference in my own opinion.

Glad it works for you, let me know how you go.

      Hi Shari

Good luck with your new job, I work in a college as head of department so I really need my full concentration and not this head pressure.

I took amitrypaline about 3 months ago as I was originally diagnosed with chronic tension headaches which was wrong. I took it for less than 2 weeks and stopped because the pressure was getting worse, also there were a few side affects but apparently these are worse in first 2 weeks. If you have a headache disorder it's supposed to be good.

I have genuine pressure that I can feel moving around in my head depending on my head position. If I bend over the pain increases and I can feel pressure moving forward.

I have a ENT second opinion tomorrow as first one couldn't find anything. I had MRI scan which was normal and showed no sinus issues but I'm thinking it might be that vacum headache I wrote about. I do hope they find what's wrong as it's so hard to do anything

Yeah mate will do not too bad at the mo the pain is there but not as much.

I'm also on amitriptyline I take 2 every night but I feel it helps with my migraine pain but my pressure is still there
    • Posted

I'm only allowed one amtriptyline not tried taking too. Weird thing is since this came on again keep getting either pins and needles in my left arm and leg or strange spasms. None occurred prior to this pressure in my eyes and head so I'm thinking it's all related some how.

Unbelievable. I keep getting pins and needles in my arms from the elbow down. Not so much the last few days, but last week I kept waking up at 3am with it. I also can see my calm muscles spasm all the time. Maybe it's just because I'm anxious about what's wrong with me.
    • Posted

That's what I think it is just worrying over this stupid pain. Was ok yest but this morning can feel it building up already behind my eyes.
    • Posted

I wouldn't worry to much about the pins and needles.

I'm seeing ENT today for a second opinion, so hope they order to a CT scan on sinus area as they are often better than MRI's for this. There's definately some trapped air in my sinus cavities, trouble is I have no signs of sinusitus. As soon as I start moving around I can feel it. I bend forward, it moves forward in my head and that brings on headaches. Just looking down typing now and I can feel it pushing from behind my nose. I'm going to tell ENT today that I think I have some sort of vacuum sinus headache air is trapped probably in the ethmoid sinus cavity. When I move the air pressure inside the cavity increases causing pressure feeling as it pushes on the inside part of my nose. I think this could be why when I pop my ears it gives me temporary relief as it takes some area out of nasal cavity which could relieve the pressure.

The thing is, we all know how we feel, its trying to get this info to the doctors and specialists. I've looked at every headache ever defined and my symptoms don't fit any of them. I will let you know how I go, hopefully I might get some answers unless I get fobbed off.

Well I've seen ENT. She was very nice to be fair but said she hadn't heard of these strange symptoms. Gave me a nasal spray and told me to come back in 6 weeks and if I'm still the same she'll order a CT scan. She did ask loads of questions about my work and personal life. I said before all this I had a great life, now this has ruined it. Pretty sure she thought I might be mental ha.

It is amazing that nothing is known about this. I'm pretty certain it's trapped air that can't pressurise so it's so frustrating that nothing seems to get done. Is this affecting anyone's life as much as mine, I feel like I don't want to do anything anymore as nothing's fun with head pressure and headaches all the time.

Lol at the nasal spray that's their remedy for our pain that don't work instead it's like holding a cat up and having wee up your nose just as effective too lol. But no poor remedy don't work had it loads of times clears your sinus for a minute or two and that's it lets hope the scan picks up something.

      Hello,

I too have the pins and needles feeling in arms and part of hand. Also get them on my head sometimes. Didn't have these before the pressure started either.

I have noticed altitude changes make my head worse in some areas. I too get headrushes and pressure worsens when bending forward. I have mentioned this to doctors thinking it has to be a sign of something, if altitude and also barometric changes are affecting me but they seem to think it's nothing.

Does it affect your reading books too?

I will look up how to pop my ears. No idea how to (safely). I always thought it was blood rushing to my head when I bend down, so I never thought to see what sensations I should be feeling/looking for when I do that.

I only walk as well. It has been my main exercise lately. Several doctors as well as a weight training teacher (for a class last year) wanted me to do a lot more than just walking (doctors wanted me running or doing sit ups/push ups. I couldn't get through the weight training class because of all the pain.

Can you describe the pressure in the head - what it feels like? I want to make sure I'm thinking of the same thing (or in the same ballpark).

I'm sorry I have posted all over the place in this thread - I'm not used to this format and I really hope I am not breaking into any conversations at inopportune times. I wish there was a way I could quote multiple posts and make a post, all while staying in the same thread and not making it confusing. Sorry again!

Also, what do you mean by 'holding the nostrils?' Does that mean pinching the nose (like when you don't want to smell something)?

Yes I cannot read anymore like I could. I just feel the pressure and fluid like feeling inside my head. It's pretty debilitating sometimes.

I still have not popped my ears I'm worried about injuring something. I'll try to find a safe way also. My doctors appointment this week got moved to the 18th. Was really anticipating it. The 18th can't come soon enough. Let me know if anything changes with anyone. Best wishes.

I understand...I once tried pushing and pulling my eyeball muscles to see what it would do. Then, I thought about trying to massage my facial muscles (nose, cheek ones included) - I never got very far as I was worried about injuring something too. I used to read in bed a lot. I have a doctor's appointment today where I will be asked about changes I've felt from acupuncture, and that's it. The chiropractor (who wishes he could help) came up with sphenoid subluxation (which wasn't the case) when I first visited him.

This morning, I tried to pop my ears by pressing my nose, breathing in, and then swallowing hard...will look at some more online directions in a bit. Best wishes to you too.

The things I read about this morning about isolated sphenoid sinusitis - seems rare, and it looks like not many doctors look for it. What can be done to see if/when doctors will check that out - I'd like to know for sure. The nondescript, vague, dull headache part makes sense, but no idea.
