Hi for the last couple of months I have experienced a rapid thumping sound in might right ear, like a  very fast heart beat.

it only seems to happen at night and is driving me mad.

some nights it wakes me up At 3 or 4 in the morning.

i have been to my GP and he is arranging for me to visit ENT specialist at my local hospital and a head scan.

does anyone know what this could be?

    Hi Andrew!

i know you posted this a while ago and wondered if you had any responses or if you found out what was causing this as the same thingbhas been happening to me for well over a year now!

I've just been putting an ear plug in when I sleep and try to lie on my right side but I haven't mentioned it yet to my GP and haven't a clue what's wrong!

    Cheers, Helen

P.S.  I used to live in London but I'm now way over on Vancouver Island!

it's ok, don't be afraid... this is common... i had  this happen to me, it's water BEHIND the ear drum; by that lil bone... it makes sound 100 times clear WITHIN the body... they treated me with nasal decongestant & suddgest 30 mg pills... sometimes when we get water in our ear or we have a cold, this happens... it went away within two days!!! hope this helps...much love!!!

Hi Andrew, I also have pulsative tinnitus, have had it for a year now, it started with a vengenance when I had sinus problems, it was so loud it frighened me, I couldnt concentrate on anything, worse still I couldnt sleep, and when I did mangage to nod off I would be woken with a start as the noise got louder.

I have been checked for the neroma, and have seen several doctors, slowly the noise has quieted down, as even walking exaggerated it, my sinus problem is much improved also as is my TMJ,

And this is where i think mine is coming from, it seems to be exaggerated by stress, and as I get very anxious easily I tend to notice my PT louder.

It is always there to some degree or other, but I am no longer scared of it, first of all I thought I as about to have a stroke at any minute. I get it in both ears, or it alternates, and sometimes it changes to ordinary tinnitus for a hour or two, its always worse when I wake up, but funnilly enough disappears when I have a shower, especially when washing my hair. I have foind massaging my head and face, especially around the jaw joints, and ears seems to soth it down. I now sleep ok, but what I found helped when it was really bad was to put the radio on, not with head phones, and keep the volume quite low so I woild have to really concentrate to hear the broadcaster, I chose a station that chats alot as well, it just takes your mind away from the awful whooshing.

Glad to say at the moment its not to fierce and completely bearable. No idea what has caused it, but now a days I cant stand loud noise, if there is a bang close to me, my ears ring like a tuning fork, as they do if i flick them, its most peculiar.

Hope everyone on here gets some peace, its so good to know we are mot alone,.

Please keep us informed of any progress made, it is such a difficult thing to live with, .......

If your thumping is a faster rate than your heart beat it probably isn't tinnitus. If no pain but persistant thumping at night & possibly in the day chances are you are not getting proper nutrition.  I took 3 magnesium tablets (at one time) at 7pm one evening, the sound stopped within an hour. It was heaven. The sound came back 2 days later & took  3 magnesiums (1 @ ea meal) for 3 more days & one daily multi vitamin & gone again. No more issues since I take a multi daily & just 1 magnesium weekly. I am 11 months "Thumping Free".  Stress may be part of it for some, but nutrition is the key. So simple to treat but NONE of the specialists I have been to even look at this as a cure or prevention. I tolerated this condition for over a year with no medical diagnosis or treatment, I only incurred high bills for no relief. This worked great for me & I hope you have the same results. I notified my GP about this so he could pass it on to patients as an option.  Now I only take one magnesium weekly & also have been taking more supplements & have NOT had any more thumping. Thank God!

      Hi!

I have this problem and have been taking magnesium but perhaps not the right type or strength as I've not had any relief.  Exactly what type of magnesium and what strength have you been taking with such good results?

      Cheers, Helen

Bill is the thumping in your ear only or your whole head too. I'm convinced it's serious

I noticed in my ear mainly but when I tried to use ear plugs, the sound would be gone only briefly until I would yawn & then it would be in my head. It is sad that none of the specialists can help with this & but was able to find others with this condition & had good results with proper nutrition. Hey, I was willing to try anything after more than a year. Maybe not for everyone, but definitely I am grateful. Go to your specialist to be sure & if he has another cure, please post it for others if it works for you. The more working options, the better. Thanks

I have taken magnesium for several months and this is not working foe me! I can take a whole bottle and nothing. I can go for 5 or 6 weeks befor episodes but once it starts I cannot stop it. It just keeps thumbing. My ear feels ful all the time and will not drain. I too been to three doctors but nothing. Very frustrating. Has anyone found a cure ? Magnesium just isn't working for me.

Thanks Bill for your information. I have been taking one magnesium tablet every day but it doesn't seem to help much. I'm going to try increasing the magnesium and add a vitamin supplement and see if it helps. Thanks again and wish me luck!

Everyone thank you for this forum and all the comments. I just began having these loud thumping sound in my left ear, it had been there before but not so loud. I was about to call my doctor when I decided to jump on my computer to google and search for answers. Wow, I found my answer and had to do with lack of magnesium. All my symptoms: cramp on one leg, tingling of leg, osteoporosis in knee, lower back pain, eyesight a bit off and fogginess all came to mind once I read of what deficiencies can be caused in your body.

I had some magnesium and calcium in cupboard and took 500 and another 500 mg and sound literally faded and now is gone. I will continue now that I know what the cause was. I just wanted to say thank you all for your great details on how to treat it. I will continue to get rid of the rest of symptoms above!
