hi everyone im 13 years old and I have just found myself with worms again! at the start of the year we bought some worm medication from the pharmacy and I thought yay this will just kill them and ill be fine again so I took the medication and now the damn things are back ! I felt the itching wriggling feeling about 3 weeks ago and last night was hard I had to stay very still in one position and just force myself to sleep! I was terrified that I will have sleepless nights again! last year I also had them very very badly andi didn't sleep all night I just stood up looking out the window all night just waiting for the sunset it was AWWFULLL and now I fear that that's going to happen again ! I recently got a NEW BED! and I thought that would do the trick but no there back! I don't know what to do as I always go to friends houses for sleepovers and im scared I will give them worms!

Nah its fine 😂..if you seen my comment u would know that I'm 14 but anyways.....I have had pinworms for about a year or two...every month or so I realize 'OH S**T.... I HAVE PINWORMS! !' but yeah I have to deal with it....I guess it just gets passed on through other people and then back to you...that's what I think but don't take my word for anything.

Plus....u might be the youngest but only by a year 😂.

oh thank goodness your 14 but how do u sleep at night from having them for 2 years! I just cant sleep

Well...sometimes I literally won't sleep but he only thing keeping me going is this one fact. ...

      Apparently sleeping a lot isn't a good thing...so whenever I can't aleep I'm just like 'it's fine'

    Hi Folks

I've been what I can only call managing threadworm.

Getting my gut flora sorted by drinking lemon or lime water first thing in the morning and having yogurt for breakfast.  I also avoid sugary foods and processed carbs like bread.  If I get the crawling sensation then I use tea tree oil on all my bits, it stings a bit but does the job.

I would avoid medication as this made my gut flora bad and also gave me liver damage.

I can only assume that some of us are more susceptible to them and that it starts with compromised stomach flora.

I am very careful when out and about not to put my hands near my face or eat anything.  If you think you are susceptible then I would avoid eating at restaurants etc or if you do avoid uncooked stuff like salads.

I wouldn't worry too much about hygiene around the house, just normal cleaning is adequate despite what your GP tells you.  Oh and btw most doctors don't know much about them and will only give you the medicine which in my opinion is useless if not damaging.

I still get them now and then but after following a better diet I am much better.  And I don't freak out so much because I know it's not because I'm unhygienic but just not so good at killing them off when I ingest them.  Good god they must be everywhere and everyone is ingesting them all the time so don't think they are only residing in your home.

It's thanks to this conversation (thanks Anna) that I have learnt all this and can cope.  Thank the geek gods for the internet as I would probably never have had this much discussion with fellow sufferers otherwise.

Love and empathy to you all, don't give up hope, we can live with these little bstrds without them turning us into some self loathing, mad cleaning wrecks.

    V.x

hey v thanks so much for your update it has really helped me! can u buy tea tree oil from the supermarket?

      Hi juju

Sorry for the v late reply I haven't been following for a while.  I'm glad it's helped you.  Not sure if you can get tea tree oil in supermarkets, but you can probably get it in pharmacies, health food shops or online.  I got some online from a company called Fresh skin - you can get 100ml bottles which work out a lot cheaper and their oils are pretty good quality for the price.

Hope you are winning with the unwelcome guests.

      lotsa luv

Hi all, newbie here and I've joined because I've read just about every thread on threadworms on the internet from the last 5 years (It's a tad obsessive). Where do I begin...............

So about 6 weeks ago my son complained of a itchy bum, I checked and he had a wriggler emerging from his bum (yuck). I went to the docs, got vermox and as a precaution took one myself (I'd had no symptoms whatsoever and hadn't had thread worms in about 30+ years)..........then that night the invasion appeared with gusto ! I was horrified, they kept me up for hours, I was getting up during the night and wiping my bum with wipes to ease the itch and try to get rid, dead ones were visible on my sheets next day. I took one tablet on the tuesday, one on the saturday, another the following saturday and another the following tuesday (4 in a fortnight, I'm a big lady, so figured my dosage should be higher than an average weight 7 year old).

I took garlic capsules, ate pumkin seeds, folded toilet paper and applied a mixture or V/B gel & the juice from a garlic capsule and put it right up to my bum hole every night so the buggers can't escape and so far I've not seen any adult worms in my poo or on the toilet wipes. But here's the thing, lately on wiping after say a watery movement that is not very solid, I've seen the odd dot and I swear it moved (cry), so I'm thinking this is the odd baby threadworm ?

I've started taking 1 tbsp of diatomaceous earth food grade daily, and have used this the last 4 days, I'm still doing my toilet paper with a healthy splodge of sudocrem style cream next to my bum hole and am also using a Balance Activ B/V gel dose up my lady parts (I don't think they've migrated there but the thought knocks me sick and I'm terrified they'll come back to my bum).

Question is, these tiny things I see on the paper that I'm sure are moving is like literally 1 per day, not thousands, and not 1cm adults. So do I just persevere with the DE, bum hole covering on a night or should I be taking yet another dose of vermox (last pill I took was probably about 4 weeks ago, and I'm fairly sure my child is okay but I'm nervous every time he says he's got an itch).

This has literally knocked me sick, I even bought a new vacuum, dust mask, wiped everything down, hoovered thoroughly, cut fingernails, cleaned nails with nail brush and tried to not put my hands in my mouth (I'd been biting my nails for months previous, so I've probably caught them by doing that), new knickers in the morning, wiping myself as soon as I got up etc (so I'm at a loss why there could be the odd minute thing appearing when I wipe after a bowel movement, and I do check my paper I remove next morning and there have been no dead adults caught in the cream / gel ?).

I'm really sick of this, it's really got me down and I think I'm turning into a paranoid wreck (even if I don't feel them emerging on a night anymore), I cringe if say I feel any kind of twitch or itch, tense up and clench my bum (and with the hot weather I now get a bit of sweaty bum syndrome which also has me fleeing to the loo to wipe and check if anything is there, which there isn't !).

I'm glad I can vent, this isn't something I want to discuss with friends, but I have spoken to my sons teacher to ask if they'll make sure the cleaners are doing a thorough clean (as my son has had these things about 4 times now since he started school).

Hello, firstly I’d like to say how thankful I am for finding this forum, although we all seem to have some horror stories, it’s a relief to know that other people are going through the same thing. I wanted to share my story to shed some light on some of the urban myths you hear once you google anything to do with threadworms. I had them on and off since I was about 9 until I was 15 and after that last infection, we moved house and I was not infected again for another 3 years (which I now think was down to the move). However I’m now 18 years old and discovered this weekend that I have them again after experiencing the awful tingle. I took ovex on Saturday night but my symptoms were extremely mild so I assumed I’d caught them early until I was about to fall asleep and noticed a horrible tingle in my ears. This was something I’d experienced during past infections but never so obviously. These symptoms continued into Sunday and Monday by which time I knew I had them in my ears, nose and possibly eyes as well since all of these areas were extremely itchy/irritated. Then last night (Monday night) before I went to bed I felt something blocking the top of my right nostril (sorry this is really gross) it wasn’t painful or that uncomfortable but it was noticeable enough that I wanted to get it out even though I already had a horrible feeling that I knew what it was. I ended up blowing out (after a lot of effort) a fully grown female and was nearly sick. I couldn’t tell if it was alive or dead, hopefully dead as it wasn’t moving but then ended up having the worst night so far in terms of symptoms, with itching down below and very painful earache. So I’m wondering if the oxev has done anything at all as although it’s only been 48 hours or so, everything just appears to be getting worse. And does anyone know if ovex is enough to get rid of worms in other parts of the body?? I’ve obviously taken all the hygiene measures, cleaning thoroughly, disenfected phone/laptop screens, hot washed all bedding/clothes, my entire family had been treated, washing hands and scrubbing nails etc. I even had my fresh set of acrylic nails removed (which was somehow the most upsetting part). I’m not sure at this stage whether ovex will work but am planning on taking one every week for at least 4 weeks anyway just to make sure. My biggest concern right now is my relationship and my future which hopefully some of you with more experience can help me with? I don’t live with my boyfriend but we do stay over at each other’s houses often (which we won’t be doing now) should I tell him I have this and how? Should I give him some ovex? How does this effect people’s sex lives long term? I’m scared this will ruin our relationship. I’m also really concerned about moving to uni in September and taking the buggers with me and it’s making me so miserable sad I also work as a waitress in a restaurant and I’m not sure whether to tell them or not? Sorry for the long winded post but generally any help or advice would be great, thank you ladies

Hi Jen.  Sorry to hear about your ordeal.  Firstly, there's no need to tell work because it sounds like you are extremely hygienic so the risk of infecting anyone is low.  I would definitely get yourself along to your GP to talk about the sensations in your nose and ears and take along evidence if you can.  I've read many accounts of this kind of infestation but I really don't know how it can happen.  Be forceful with your doctor and don't take no for an answer, they should refer you to a specialist.  I know it's difficult but I think you should tell your boyfriend so that he can take the medication too.  There's no reason it should effect your sex life just as long as you shower in the morning before any such activity(!) because it's difficult to know what happens in the night if that makes sense.  You are young and I'm sure you're going to shift them soon - as with most of us it looks like you have a tendency to infection but most of the people that have them long term seem to be older and have had kids.  Again, I have no idea why.  Well done for being brave and posting your message, good luck.  x

Hi Jen, wondering how you are. Living in US i dont think i can get ovex. I have ordered meds from supposedly canada but twice they havent come. Waiting again. Dr hasnt identified them, but trying again to get him to test me. Found that if i can take albenza 400mg am, then pm, with fatty meals 3 to 4 days in a row then again starting 4 days later for weeks they seem to go, but i dont have enough meds to keep them away. Order and maybe its a customs thing? Drs dont want to help ive found. They think im crazed i guess. I am from these parasites. Please, anyone, let me know what has worked for you. Ive had them for many months now.

I think most drugs only work in the GI system. Not sure how to treat in sinuses. They should die because they need the crap in GI system to survive.

      Any success stories?

Hi so, it’s been a full month now and I’m doing I’m disappointed to say I still have them, possibly even worse than I did originally. Have been through a real ordeal inn the past few weeks including the possiblity of tapeworm and several trips to my GP and A&E. They are still very much present in my sinus/eye/ear area and I feel aware of them all over my face as well as experiencing itchiness on my scalp. I’ve actually now seen threadworms in a variety of shapes and sizes which I’m guessing is because of differ stages of development such as small white fat worms, extremely thin cotton/thread like worms, short straight translucent ones, even what appears to be tiny clusters of thread in my eyelashes and eyebrows. I’m honestly living a nightmare and can only sleep with the help of sleeping tablets. I’ve taken meb once a week for the past 4 weeks and it seems to have done nothing. My doctor is now referring me to an infectious disease specialist in Stoke who I’m seeing on Monday but after reading this forum I’m not feeling very optimistic. All doctors and consultants I’ve seen so far have been baffled and I only seem to have been taken seriously after passing what I suspected wasn’t was a tapeworm segment (which I’m still sceptical of honestly). I’ll update this post after I go to stoke and let you know ignorance I learn anything new or helpful. Till then, I’ll just share some things over found effective so far:

-try and cut out alcohol as my symptoms seem to double after a night out drinking. They also flare up after I consume large amounts of sugar

-if anyone is suffering with them in face area, either tea tree or eucalyptus oil mixed with coconut oil has helped soothe the itching. Also Vaseline around nose/ears/ eyelashes seems to prevent them being able to migrate across the face too much

-gargle with apple cider vinegar if you feel them in the throat (also drinking some of this once a day has helped)
