REZUM--HAVE YOU HAD THIS DONE???????

I had a nice conversation today with the President of the "Urology Times". He was telling me that there is a "New Procedure" that has been approved called the "REZUM SYSTEM". The company that makes the system is called "NXThera, Inc". You can google them up and lots of stuff comes up. I called them for a referral and they gave me a Doctor in Minnepolis that has done it over 50 times now. I called his nurse and she said he would call me back and answer my questions on monday. As you guys probably know Doctors are not very good at returning calls but we'll see what happens. Iam not very good at explaining how the procedure works but basically they take the device and put it up the uretha and vaporize the prostate cells which kills them. It works with high pressure "steam" that at a certain degree will kill the prostate tissue. My question for you guys is there anybody out there that has had it done to them and how are you getting along and are there "side effects", etc etc?????

Don't believe the nxthera testimonials this is a painful procedure I would recommend sedation the prostate block was bad but the procedure itself was equally as painful I had it done yesterday and will have a catheter for 3 days so far so good

While one of my partners offers it performed awake, I only offer it with sedation.
Some folks have different pain tolerance, but I think any procedure performed in that area has the potential to be immensely uncomfortable, and you won't know the pain level until you have it done. Rather than cause anxiety or severe pain, just have it done asleep.

The anesthesia time is much less (and there are risks the longer you have anesthesia), side effects are less.

I had it done without any sedation and it hurt a lot. The first thing I said when it was done was you should sedate people before you do this.
Someone on one of the treads said, "they should replace waterboarding with Rezum"

I absolutely agree with you about the anesthesia for the procedure. To do it any other way, absent complicating factors, is barbaric and smacks of sadism.

Hi Neal,
Speaking of sadists, years ago I had a rigid cystoscopy done without anesthesia in his office. Very well known urologist. If you're not familiar, it's nothing like the flexible cystoscopies that are mostly done these days. I mentioned it to a couple of urologists over the past few years. One got a chuckle and the other could hardly believe it.

It's really individual, so it is hard to say. I can tell you I'm just over a month and I had a very complicated UTI to go along with it. And today is my best day yet. No pain, only still a bit of residual swelling and aome mild discomfort when urinating. I can tell you my last orgasm was dry. But I had 3 before that that weren't. I dont think I had retro but I believe something was blocking the path out. I also had a dry one once prior to surgery. Honestly best advice would bw stay away from sex for at least a month. I wish I had. Nothing like ejaculating blood and for mw I felt like I had the worst UTI for at least three days everytime I did it. Next time we have sex will be at least a month from the previous time. I mean why have kidney surgery then have someone punch you in the back a week later. An orgasm is squeezing your sore damaged prostate. It is a dumb idea. And I think if you cant wait you've got bigger issues.

Hi Jim,
I had the joy of one of those too about 3 years ago. Haven't had another cysto since. I wish I could do one on that doctor!

I'm just one person, but I didn't have much pain after the procedure. It took forever for me to be able to pee decently, but from the next day on I didn't have much pain. Some burning when I peed, but it was intermittent and not unbearable. The worst pain was during the procedure (awful) and the day of.

My biggest fear is pain for weeks or months during healing and maybe not being able to work (desk job) as well. Have you heard many talk about the pain while healing on here? You may be the exception. Thanks

Mike,
There are lots of ways to see if you're retaining too much. The easiest one is to self cath after every natural void for a week or two and measure the output. If you're under about 150cc, whatever caused your stones, it wasn't retention. If that's the case, you're peeing OK/tolerating Flomax OK and concerned about recovery from Rezum, you might want to sit tight til something else comes along, as you seem to be doing fine.
If you ARE retaining enough to cause stones, here's my sense of typical pain with Rezum:
Pain for weeks or months is unusual. The biggest problem (assuming you don't have a complication) is once you start peeing again, urgency can be pretty severe for a number of weeks. If you can work from home, its no problem, if you're in an office with a bathroom that's 150 feet away and requires a key it might be more of an issue. Pain typically comes when there's a follow up UTI.
I'd be interested to hear what Jersey Uro has to say, but I don't think most men have much pain other than some burning while peeing for a month or so after a couple of days. I would be prepared to self cath for awhile. Most guys are OK within a week, I wasn't peeing at all for 3 and not to the point where it wasn't an issue for 5.

I had Rezum procedure with mild ("twilight" sedation. I have NO memory of any pain during or after procedure. I was even able to drive myself home. Only discomfort came from Foley catheter I had for 4 days. Not painful, just inconvenient and some bleeding. Only "problem" is that I am still unable to pee on my own without self-catheterizing 60 something days after the procedure. From everything I've read and heard, that is unusually long, but not unprecedented. Do not fear the procedure on the basis of pain, so long as you are anesthetized properly.

Mike: I chose to have Rezum done done in May because I had a bladder stone removed in February. The procedure was done on a Friday. If I was still working (I'm 62, retired), I could have done my desk job on Monday. Planning for a few extra days off would be wise, though.
The pain was really only during the less than 5 minute procedure. I had a prostate block only; not a general. Afterwards, I just experienced a vague sense of discomfort, not pain, for a few days. I'm sure that the 600 mg Motrin 3x a day helped.
The biggest thing I noticed right after getting Rezum done is that the strong smell from my urine over the last 10 years was gone. Hopefully this means that I'm emptying better and that bladder stones won't form again. Time will tell.
Good luck on what you choose to do.
Bill

Thank you to ALL of you for the info and support. Not sure when , but I'm pretty sure the Rezum will need to be done. The longer I can wait perhaps the more procedures my uro will have done by then. Mean time I'm drinking 2 to 3 litres of water every day.
