SAME BOAT

I Am in the same boat I have one very large fibroid that as of yet has not really caused me any pain, I have been told by one doctor that I have cancer and he was going to remove everything because I am almost 50 and I dont need any of it anyway. the next said no cancer but we have to remove everything because that is what we do??/( I am in ontario Canada) I am seeing a 3rd doctor on Wednesday of this coming week I am somewhat hopeful that she will just be on board for watchful waiting. I am 100% opposed to having a hysterectomy and will fight in every way possible to not have this done to me. I think it is barbaric the way they treat woman and the things they tell us just to get us to do what they want ....

MRI doesn't show for a certainty if a fibroid is cancerous, although it can show "abnormal" activity (which can also just be degeneration of a benign fibroid.) Other indicators can be found through blood tests, or a D&C test. However, none of these are positively conclusive, because the only way to detect a cancerous fibroid is by cutting into it and testing it in a lab, something surgeons won't do if they suspect anything "wrong".
But again, it's so rare. Only 5% of cancers are uterine, and only 5% of those are fibroid sarcoma. It's also more likely to affect women over 60.
Unless women have all these indications (age, post-menopause, growing or problematic fibroids, abnormal tests) there is very no reason to go for a hysterectomy, and things like myomectomy or embolisation should definitely be considered first!

Yes, I'm aware but it is the closest picture apart from taking every fibroid out and a large percentage of women have so many that wouldn't be practical , that would be the same as taking it all out just in case. I just advocate MRI when an ultrasound just shows a blur. I also don't think hysteroscopy is the answer , it's cheaper yes. See sometimes drs go for the cheaper route too. When looking at MRI the radiologists can normally distinguish tumours from fibroids they look different. We also can have uterus sample taken for urerine cancer as well. Ca125 blood test not conclusive , just a marker.

I had to reply to this.
I am 51 years old and no sign of Menpause. 1st Doc said Hysterectomy only I said no. Had a endometrial Ablation ( don’t do it makes it worse) Fibroid was 11cm I then insisted to be referred for UFE. This shrunk it from 11 to 7.5cm. Not a total success. Then I decided I wanted a Myomectomy done Laprascopic (an option not possible at 11cm) another Gyn
Tried to push me to Hysterectomy I again refused and insisted I be referred to a Laprascopic Gynocolgist. I was then told yes I can have it.
I ended up getting the operation converted to an open myomectomy but the main thing is I woke up with all my organs intact. I was the only woman over 40 on the ward that did not have a Hysterectomy. My advice do what’s best for you NOT what’s easier for the doctors.
I am now recovering 3 weeks post op and I’m so glad I had it done. Good luck to you

Well put Patricia, and others ..do not do what is easier for the Doctors as that's what some of them offer...when I mentioned the option of myomectomy to a consultant gynaecologist..he said ..oh you don't want that...too much blood ??? What this meant is he doesn't have the skills or inclination..if you have a hysterectomy it's easier for them..it's all out and no more problems...off the books...there may be after effects for you though...women need to be aware.

I had my Fibroid only removed. I am now almost 4 weeks post op. I had pretty bad period style cramps over the weekend. I did overdo things a bit on Thursday so it may have been that. I had one large Fibroid removed it was 7.5cm.

It depends on which Myomectomy you have. I had a Laprascopic which was then converted to an open Procedure. Open Myomectomy recovery is 4-6.weeks. It’s less with Laprascopic Myomectomy. I’m planning to return to work on Monday i have a desk job so I’m sat down all day. Hope this helps

I was only 35 when diagnosed with problematic fibroids, and I will never forget when the nurse who did one of my routine ultrasounds casually asked me, "why don't you just get a hysterectomy?"
I was so angry! How dare she ask that? It was in this totally arrogant way, too, like "rather than wasting all our time, why don't you just do us all a favour and have your bits removed?"
SMH.
