I have been having these kind of inner thigh muscle cramps on and off for a long time. I can appreciate what you describe when they are happening. Take care.

Just want to add to my previous entry--being a medical doctor I do tend to prefer known scientific treatments but as we absolutely do not know the root causes of this and as I suffer as much as anyone with the Upper Thigh Cramps (UTC--to distinguish from more benign calf and foot cramps!) then I tried the nightly 25mg benadryl and so far --after 3 months I have to say, NO CRAMPS, I sleep better also. But hydration is still critical and getting a hot tub (if possible-or hot shower) after snow shovelling etc is important. I sleep stretched out no bent legs and get out of bed carefully. I think if I go 6 months with no cramps I would have to say I will be impressed with the suggestion to try unisom. No way to say it would work for everyone.  JD

I'm so glad you tried it!! I keep begging people to try it smile. I am able to take half a unisom, and have been thigh spasms free for 140 days!!!!!

My doctor told me that I can't take Unisom or anything else that would make me sleepy because I have sleep apnea. I also can't take it with the medicines I am prescribed. 😔

Are you on a CPAP Machine for the Sleep Apnea?

I'm so sorry! Could you take a half dose as long as you are using the CPAP?

Yes, I can't count on it not leaking, though.

It's not just the sleep apnea, I can't take it with my other medications.

Ive been getting the same inner thigh cramps for over 10 years and the only thing that helps or counteract the cramp is too stand up and arch your back ( this will be very painful tho) but will make it go away once you reach full arch or stretch. The cramp will wants to pull your upper body down so standing up helps greatly. If you get one while still lying in bed dont get up just hang your feet off the bed and arch your back to stretch it out, most of the time you can avoid the pain this way. The pain used to be so bad it would make me have to urinate and it made me very violent while the cramp was happening. Most of what triggers it is the way you get out of bed while sleeping, if you dont plant both feet on the floor before standing up can trigger the cramp.

The only other time i will get them will be after the first long hike of hunting season or while im free diving in cold water. Also placing a super hot towel on your inner thigh will stop the pain immediately works but also sometimes it does nothing. Another thing when i open the refrigerator to get water or gatorade during a cramp the cold air from opening the door either makes it return or intensifies the cramp.

Hope this helps some people because its a doozy......

My daughter told me to try this remedy and it works for me. When I feel the twinge of pain in my legs or upper thigh I take a tablespoon of yellow mustard and swallow it down. Within a few minutes the pain ceases. Sounds crazy but it works for me. Let me know if it brings you relief

Annabanana6014, I have yet to try the yellow mustard as it's always the LAST thing on my mind when having an attack, even if i have previously placed the mustard strategically next to me. LOL, i don't know why. Has anyone else noted back about whether they did or did not try this method?question

Hi yall I'm having an attack as we speak. Glad to see this forum is still up to date...

I would love to try this method I'll have to sleep with mustard at bedside tho cause I ain't gonna make it down stairs I was surprised I made it to the bathroom this time.. I did however use my muscle cream and heating pad right away. This episode isn't that bad this time....

Hi I know this is an old post, but I'm sure you probably still have the leg spasms. Mine started about 7 years ago and I can pretty much predict when it's going to happen I tried everything stretching vitamins, magnesium etc. And it all helps but once its happening what really can be done but ride it out....I did find one thing that helps while the spasm is happening....one night while I was asleep it happened I sat on the end of the bed it the worst pain ever I had next to me a glass of ice water I just dumped the whole thing on my thigh. Soaked the bed and the carpet..but to my surprise my leg started to unlock...I now sleep with a gallon of water next to my bed and yep when it happens pour it out on my leg all over the bed and carpet.. but it works it really Helps the cold helps....

One of the fastest treatments I have found was described a few months ago. Using three 6" wide Ace bandages, you take one and leave it rolled up in the cellophane sleeve. Take a second Ace and while holding the rolled bandage over the area with the worst cramp, TIGHTLY wrap the secongd bandage around the thigh and over the rolled bandage, pushing as hard as you can into the thigh muscle and pull it tight. You want to exert as much pressure as you can onto the rolled bandage. Use the third bandage to spread out the area under pressure. Use a third bandage if you need more pressure of if your legs are big. Leave it in place for at least 20 minutes or until the cramp is gone. This usually relieves the cramps in a few minutes but leave it on to be sure the cramp is fully relaxed and does not start again.

Do not leave it on for more than an hour. You do not want a tourniquet effect, just a firm compression of the rolled bandage on top of the cramping muscles.

Sorry you are having the same painful experience. Thank you for adding something new to try. I hadn't had any for a few months and suddenly it returned in both legs at the same time. I had cut back on my magnesium for a few days because I thought I might be taking too much. I also had forgotten to take my Cal Mag Zyme for a couple of days. I immediately went back to the increased dose of magnesium and the rest of my vitamins and minerals and so far it hasn't happened again.
