Shortness of breath with Costochondritis?

Posted , 83 users are following.

I was diagnosed with Costochondritis and I have been noticing shortness of breath along with pain. I have had EKG's and chest xrays as well as blood tests. My doctor firmly believes this is not a heart issue.

Has anyone else noticed shortness of breath with this? My pain is mainly in my sternum but radiates through out my whole chest wall.

    Could the breathlessness be anxiety-related?

If you haven't already, go see an osteopath or physiotherapist. They can help reduce or eliminate the costo, and that will then eliminate all the symptoms produced by anxiety.

Also, meditation helps with anxiety, panic and breathlessness if it is being caused by anxiety.

    update

i am on my 4th day of taking Prednisolone, its a 3 week course but already i am feeling like a completley new person. If anyone is struggling and not tried steroids for costo, and of course your GP says youll be fine to try them, then i would.

i get no pain around my sternum and heart anymore (After 4days!!)

my shortness of breath was then diagnosed with anxiety/panic attacks, so im also on seperate medication for that, but that goes to show how powerful costo can be, it frightened me some days with how bad it got.

i wanted to post this update to not only so people can enquire to there doctor but to also show there is help available and i wish everyone feels comfort and remains safe.

    stay positive guys

wow that's amazing! so pleased they have found a solution for you 😃 glad you are finally pain free I will indeed enquire about these myself, and thankyou for the update with the shortness of breath. After further symptoms I think I may possible have mild asthma as Ive had slight wheezing and then become bunged up. I can be like it during the day too not just of a night 😦

Anyway u take good care. Such a horrible condition and feel your relief!

      Hi Sharif,

i came off my steroids 2 weeks ago and had nothing but problems again, the shortness of breath was the worst its ever been, i was too frightened to sleep as it set my anxiety off and was panicing. i have been given another months course of steroids, but theres got to be more things they can do.... surely they cant just feed people steroids for rest of their lives..

i hope everyone in here is managing the best they can, ever need anyone to talk to this is a great community of people. stay safe people

hi there, I've been suffering with costo around 4 years now believe me I feel for everyone going through this. However, I also know that treatment is very different for each individual . I was advised to have the injection but never been brave enough to have it . All I can say is to look into everything which can reduce inflammation. I have heard turmeric is a good source which can b found in tablet form. You could try a diet with anti inflammatory food, but myself I am currently on amitriptyline low dose of 10mg but have to say for me is most effective 😃

everything your describing is associated with coso look up and read as much as you can on it . don't lay flat on your back . watch have you make movements on upper chest area. hot and cold cloths. rubbing area with finger tips around area lightly like a feather. good luck . take this advice from someone that has had it for about 15 years plus years.

i have the same symptoms tightness in chest, pain in back and neck, but the shortness of breath is what gets me the most! its all i can think about most of the time. its scary to read people have had this for years.... ive had it for two months. for me, im a christian so i have faith that God will heal me in due time. i have taken ibuprofen and it doesnt really do anything because like i said, the shortness of breath is worse than anything else . taking walks sometimes helps. forcing myself to exercise and praying constantly. i hope all of you guys get better too!

i agrrr that the shortness of breath is the worst. ive been saying that since last year. i dont have much pain. my presenting symptom is mainly pressure. i read somewhere that theres inflammation and it presses on a nerve and causing the sensation that you cant breath. idk how teue that is. i more so think theres i flammation and its not allowing the ribcage to expand easily. it creates a resistance. mine is often worse when i lay down.

yeah.... that makes sense! im the exact same... just pressure and the breathing . i am desperate for some relief. ibuprofun doesnt really help, neither does tylenol. i wish this would go away 😦

hello everyone.my one year anniversary with costochondritis is coming in a few days. started out with stabbing achces and pains and progressively became chest pressure with shortness of breath . sometimes the pressure is under my breasts where my bra would sit, and is so bad tht i cant wear a bra without feeling like i am being strangled. many times i have shortness of breath upon rest but worse with exertion. its worst on hot humid days. the first round lasted 3.5 mo ths before dwindling away. then came back after a cold in the winter and has been here the last 4 months. ive seen many specialists, had cts, xrays, ekg, emdoscopy, barium swallow, amd now being seen for asthma, but most docs are stumped amd brush me off as anxiety. very frustrating. i hate that i cant exert. i see people in way worse condition than myself physically, jogging down the street and i think, wow i cant do that anymore. but one day i will again. not letting it bring me down anymore. gonna try krill oil, accupunture amd vitamin d. ice and sttetching. breathing exercises too. good luck everyone. we arent alone.

ive gotten costochodritis a few weeks ago i was working and it got to where I couldn't lift heavy, my upper abdomen would hurt if i lifted along with my upper chest as it went along it hurted in between my breast very bad, and it started to make my sturnum hurt and got shortness of breath the pain has cease on the top of my chest i still feel it way deep inside so when I feel it I use heating pad, been to dr took chest x-ray didn't see anything so I'm going to go through more test, im hoping and praying this will pass, I had to let my job go because of this, does anyone that has this have trouble with eating , like with your upper abdomen, get in touch with me.

i recently posted about chest pressure, shortness of breath and sternum/back/neck/collarbone pains. after a year of this doctor, that specialist, ekgs, CT scan, xrays, blood tests, etc, i decided to see an allergist for asthma and she gave me some inhalers which so far seem to be helping. i never thought it could be asthma, bc i never had wheezing, or mucus, or severe coughing, just the chest pressure and different pains. my symptoms would come and go throughout the day with no major patterns. things always seemed to vary.i will make an update in a week or two to let everyone know if the medication is working. i just want to breathe again. and exert myself without losong my breath!
