Smelly gas like sulphur and rotten eggs

Hi all. So embarrassed but don't know what else to do. I actually am getting seriously depressed as It Is so bad.

I have been getting really bloated and pass the most foul smelling gas ever, it stinks and lingers in the room. I'm having to air my bungalow every evening.

I eat relatively healthy, excercise regularly and am slim.

This has been going on solidly for 2 whole months. I have tried eating different things but i just keep getting this awful smell! Sometimes I feel like I'm going to shit myself!! I can't have people over and am scared to go out when I know I'll be in a small space. I gave up my job!!

I have had to do a stool sample, all clear. The doctors just say I have IBS. They gave me colofac (mebeverine) which did nothing! I don't know what the hell to do!!

PLEASE HELP

I've had the same issue. This post is the first thing that comes up on Google. I read this post about two months ago. I was nearly unable to see my cousin who came into town because of it. Then suddenly the pain and the gas went away and with great releaf I went out to drink. Some times it comes and goes like a summer storm, other times, it lasts all day. And I always feel like I'm going to sh*t myself (which I never have). The doc thought I had a stomach ulcer. The acid reducer made it worse.

I've been on the paleo/primal diet for 3 years up until three weeks ago. I thought it made sense that we should eat an 'ancestral diet' and I wanted to get rid of that stubborn belly fat that wouldn't go away no matter how much I worked out. Then it became about this IBS flatulence thunderstorm, which I don't remember having before. In fact, I haven't dated in three years because of it. Looking through this thread, everyone blames glutten or dairy. It almost seems patranozing, if I told them that I've been doing that, they'd probably say I wasn't doing it hard enough or wasn't doing it right.

Then I read a Danish website that stated flatly "Nordic food is Viking food" and then saw a tedtalk about starches being the human diet. The whole primal/paleo diet is complete speculation, I've finally caved to this fact. Who bloody well knows what cavemen ate? And what we do know they ate--mamoths and aurochs--aren't around anymore. I know what my ancestors 1000-7500 years ago from Norway, Ireland, and Germany ate.

So three weeks ago, I put Steel cut oats 'Irish oats' in the slow cooker along with slices of apple, walnuts, raisins, and cinnamon, and went to bed. In the morning, I hesitently ate it, thinking "this is going to turn out bad for me", and instead of coffee, drank green tea. I felt great all morning.. For lunch, I ate blueberries, raw almonds, and a green juice. Then for Dinner, rotisserie chicken and *real* buttered artisan bread with no sugar used. Since then I've also added sushi to the mix when I'm too busy to cook, as well as unleavened knekkebrod. I eat meat once a day, at dinner time; usually chicken, but sometimes also a steak or lamb. I don't eat anything overly processed--no pasta, white breads, or anything with refined white sugar.

As for dairy, I've been taking it slow; just some butter or cheese here and there, and no eggs, either. I bought some lactose free milk, and will be drinking that for a month at least. I read that paleo dieters temporarily lose their ability to make the enzyme, but introcucing the milk even without the lactose, will get the body back up to speed. It's my genetic inheritence to be able to digest dairy after infancy.

I'm also going to start making sourdough artisan bread again, which my Ukrainian friend says reminds him of growing up in the USSR.

So that's my story, that's how I recovered from similar problems that you've described.

      Good morning Andy.

Thank you so much. Pretty detailed stuff.

So you think it's diet related! I really do not find restrictions on my food easy unfortunately but I guess it's one thing I have to really look into.

      Thankyou.

      Great week.

Hello Andy! Thanks for your response and support! I hope things are getting better for you daily! I have started a food diary since Friday, 9-2-16 per GI nurse recommendation until I see the GI next month! I am lactose intolerant as of April 1, 2016. Since being off of dairy completely since this past Friday, I don't have the foul gas as often. I also cut out wheat/gluten and the gas has improved so much. In addition, I chew a Lactaid tablet and a Gas X tablet b4 every meal and/or snack. A major difference already! I am thrilled. So, through the process of elimination (wheat/gluten/dairy), I strongly feel that it was the wheat products that was doing the damage. No more of that for me! Again, I hope you continue to feel better daily as we travel this journey together along with the other patients!

I mix a teaspoon of cayenne pepper in water . It does wonders for your health . From fighting cancer to getting rid of this particular problem. I did a whole bunch of research and came up with nothing until I tried this. It's not as bad as one would think . It took me 4 times and presto gone. The only reason I read this article was I simply forgot and was looking for the reason it happens to me. It only happens once or twice a year to me but I'm about to go make a drink right now. Stomach is gurgling and my burps smell like vomit. I feel like crap. But I know I will feel better by tomorrow after doing this a few times. Tumeric is also very good for your health but cayenne pepper is my suggestion. Please let me know if this works for anyone else😎

There may be many causes. You have to be patient and explore several ones. It can be chron.s, an intolerance, a sensitivity (gluten), a slow transit problem (when food sits in your gut for a long period of time the gases become smelly- you can check that out by eating something indigestible and see how much it takes to be evacuated). I.ve also been told that i have ibs, but i.m not fully convinced with that. But that.s another story. You should check for everything that you can from blood and feces in order to eliminate multiple causes. I gave up garlic and onion that made me smell really bad and also very important i started eating smaller portions and i.m no longer bloated. Pay attention to your stool also. I had pasty ones and took xifaxan for 2 weeks, 6 a day after meal. ( prescribed by my gastroenterologist). If constipated try eating more fiber, but introduce them slowly and drink more water. Wish you all you find your way out of this.

Hi Jenny! I made an account to reply to your post. I found it while googling this problem, I am having it too. I am just going on a hunch here, but as you know there is a whole ecosystem of bacteria in your colon. There are certain foods you eat that could feed bad bacteria, like yeasty foods, and some foods that will support good bacteria.

If you are really committed i would suggest a complete overhaul of your diet. Maybe start with antibiotics if you can, lie to your doc and say you got a sinus infection I dont know. While you do that, eat only clean high fiber foods. Greens, flax seed, and avoid any processed or fast foods. I mean, youre eatin steaks and salads from now on. No hamburgers, not even ground beef as ground beef is so unclean. The idea is to completely clean out and not put any more junk foods in there that the colon cant handle. You should even look into getting a colon flush, basically an enemy where a professional flushes water into your colon and suctions it out. Avoid general probiotics, they are made in labs. But DO go to a local organic market and pick up some natural and organic probiotics. Kefir, Yogurt, you want to populate your colon with good bacteria and I mean quality bacteria. It is all about rebalancing the ecosystem in your colon. About establishing a colony of good bacteria in your gut and cleansing and drowning out bad or foul smelling bacteria. Junk foods sit in your gut and feed unfavorable or bad bacterias.

      Hello Tarutan

You couldn't be more correct I tell you.

After doing a colonoscopy and found my colon is well I decided to really start looking out for my diet.its very true that you are what you eat. It's as though we are thinking together cos I have done series of clean outs of my gut I even got afraid that it's too much. The next step now is staying consistent at eating right. Infact I really think my body was just warning me all this time to loose wieght and eat healthy.

      Thanks a zillion!

Hi Jenny.  I have had the same problem for several months.  Those farts seem to follow you around don't they?  I went to the doctor who fast-tracked me to a local hospital (good one) and I am booked for an endoscopy where they sedate or numb you up and put a camera up you anus.  You have to empty your bowels the night before with 2 litres of the STRONGEST laxative so that you are really empty when they do the endoscopy.  After that hopefully they will be able to tell me what is wrong and what can be done.  I will let you know.  You should also go and see your doctor.  Don't be embarassed - it is just another part of your body and a natural process.  Please go.

      Thanks Katherine

I already did a colonoscopy infact I think that's what you are about to do. An endoscopy is done through your mouth down your upper tummy.

My doctor even took a biopsy from my perfectly clean colon that day. He noticed nothing strange at all.

The good news is I have found that a lot of the gas episodes happen after I have eaten certain foods. Like fish, eggs, and rice. So am staying away from them. It's getting better day by day.

Plus i make sure I use the loo often once I feel like. No hold backs.

Thanks alot and I wish you speedy recovery.

      All the best

    Hi all

I also suffer from this and know how terrible it is. But recently I read this post about fennel seeds and how they can help digestion if you chew them after eating. So I bought myself a bag and started to eat a small teaspoon after every meal. Its a bit weird at first and you have to chew them really well, but after a few days it started to get better. I only begun with it recently, so don t know if it will keep getting better. But considering they are very cheap, it s worth to try!

I hope you get the same results I ve been getting so far!
