Smelly gas like sulphur and rotten eggs

Hi all. So embarrassed but don't know what else to do. I actually am getting seriously depressed as It Is so bad.

I have been getting really bloated and pass the most foul smelling gas ever, it stinks and lingers in the room. I'm having to air my bungalow every evening.

I eat relatively healthy, excercise regularly and am slim.

This has been going on solidly for 2 whole months. I have tried eating different things but i just keep getting this awful smell! Sometimes I feel like I'm going to shit myself!! I can't have people over and am scared to go out when I know I'll be in a small space. I gave up my job!!

I have had to do a stool sample, all clear. The doctors just say I have IBS. They gave me colofac (mebeverine) which did nothing! I don't know what the hell to do!!

PLEASE HELP

Hi Jenny, We have to work things out ourself  most Doctor don't care.

I find, I am almost normal if I don't rice, any sugar even fruit,& i take b vitamins mostly, with OUT B6 , I think B6 makes me sick not sure. B 1 is the main vitamin I think. try a "little" cabage raw "slowly" & work up to more it take a few weeks & I found it makes my gut feel almost normal.( not at first) I am trying to work out answer myself  with research. I think mold in our house has somethink to do with it, as I used to eat a lot of rice on gluten free foods.

Something else i have found a small amount alcohol free beer seems help with the gas, & a good probitoc some days.. good luck hope this helps you.Rob

Hi Jenny. This discussion is super old now. But I have had colon resection surgery and it sounds like you have problems with absorption.

I only have half a colon now and it creates a lot of problems. Your colon length is important Bc it absorbs things including water and nutrients. Less length equals less absorption. Also it produces less bile salts which encourage your body to absorb water and nutrients. Since the surgery I have the exact same issues you explain, plus constant diarrhea and dehydration Bc of the water absorption issues. I rotate between welchol, and cholestryamine. 3 times a day. Overall helps me feel better not have to run to the bathroom all the time and not feel cramping all the time. It helps with the gas but anytime I get gas it still smells absolutely horrid and I haven't found any cure. But at least j know what it's caused by. I have malabsortion caused by my colon resection and it sounds like your IBS causes yours. I don't really have a solution for you but that may provide you peace of mind. Maybe something that helps your body conserve and absorb all the things it's supposed to would help the problem. Sorry for your struggle.

Hi jenny. Try taking good bacteria in yakult/keffir or supplement form. The smell is the bad bacteria and poor digestion.

It's been 11 months since I posted here. I thought about it because I recalled because I've been off grains and refined sugar the past two months until yesterday, and suddenly I have tons of gas and cramping. The farts aren't as stinky as they used to be, but I'm sure that would be a steep downward hill if I were to start eating wheat bread and ice cream. The other part of it is that I studied primal nutrition. I became dedicated because of surgery that stopped me from working out. Proper diet became the only factor to managing my weight. I didn't even notice that my symptoms had dissappeared.

    -Remove all soda/pop.

-Remove hydrogenated oils like vegetable oil and margarine

    My suggestion would be to:

-Remove wheat and corn, wchich tears and grinds and reduces the mucus lining of the colon.

-- A bonus--the grains (as well as seeds and nuts) contain phylate which binds to nutrients so that your body cannot digest them.

-Remove undercooked meat from your diet (if your steak is pink in the middle, you won't be able to digest it--you're feeding bad bacteria and fungai in addition to possibly carrying more bad germs).

-Remove refined sugar and fake sugar, both of which send the bacteria and fungai into a feeding frenzy and can allow them to go up into the small colon, which is where you're supposed to be breaking down the food before letting the bacteria at it.

    -Reduce FODMAP vegetables

-ADD: more vegetables. I used eat one vegetable per meal. So I'd have a steak and half a plate of brocoli which contains too much stuff that humans cannot digest (feeding frenzy in the gut...). Adding more colors to my plate brought more diversity both in nutrients as well adding more bioavailable food that would not feed the beast.

-ADD grass fed WHEY protein, which studies show help rebuild the gut lining. If you're lactose intolerant, then remove other dairy.

-Drink less alcohol--or even better remove it completely for at least 40 days--or consider switching to wine which helps prevent colon cancer from burnt food and does not contain the gas that they put into beer.

-ADD healthy fats like avocado, coconut oil, and olive oil. Even grass fed butter can be good for you.

Also, make sure you get enough sleep and reduce stress. I started meditating and actively changing my view on stress at work, looking at these times as an opportunity for growth rather than painful experiences.

-Also Make sure you do not over eat. Never binge. Allow your body to digest food. I've also practiced 24-48 hour intermittent fasts, which helps clear out my guts and remove the excess sources of gas.

I had a bit of a tire around my middle section three months ago. I also worked out a lot. I think too much, because working out too much can be a source of stress. Instead of kick boxing, pull ups and push ups and running miles, I've taken slow walks (a mile or two here and there), eaten healthy, and I've lost the tire! No love handles, I can even see my six pack (I didn't even lose the awesome shoulders and arms I had from all the calisthenics and p90x--which I thought I would!)... I cannot believe it! I personally thank Mark Sisson. He is amazing.

Good luck y'all! It's a painful issue that could have so many sources. I know it completely killed my social life for two years, so I know how painful it is. My best wishes to everyone here.

Read up on low stomach acid. Low stomach acid can cause very foul smelly gas.

The medical term for farting is flatulence. It is a natural human occurrence and some consider it to be a sign of a healthy digestive tract.

The best way to prevent your farts from becoming smelly is to avoid eating foods that are rich in sulfur. Sulfur has an odor of rotten eggs and is notorious for causing foul smelling farts. Foods to avoid include vegetables from the cabbage family such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and bok choy. Other foods rich in sulfur are meat, eggs, cheese, whole cow's milk, garlic, onions, horseradish, and sulfite preserved foods like wine and dried fruits.

Enemas will stop the gas immediately and for a while afterward. This will also reduce bloating and generally make you feel better.

Also, I eat a gluten free, vegan diet and am also experiencing this problem. So that may not be the source of this issue. I also chew my food slowly and generally follow food combination guidelines.

Hopefully someone will figure this out. I will pass on any info I find.

Hello. I've had the problem for a while and I can say what helps me and what doesn't.  After a cat scan, colonoscopy, ultra scan and seeing a professional these things work for me:  The strict Low FODMAP diet, drink only water and slippery elm tablets. Charcoal tablets and other fancy mods don't work for me. I hope this helps.

This is what I tried and it worked for me but check it oh your doctor.  It's simply my advice.  Flush your gut with a laxative the before bed, one time. Next day drink 6 Litres of water with lemon throughout the day.  Food should include kefir, kimchi organic and curciferous greens.  That evening mince 2 cloves of garlic and down it with water.  Drink plenty of lemon water for one week and longer and ginger water too.  No alcohol, no caffeine, no acidic foods.  Only alkaline.

Jenny, since this is such an old post, I am hoping this will help if you are still having issues. My doctor is a naturopath that I have been going to for about 15 years. I've experienced issues such as yours and have come to the realization it is a build up of toxins. You need to do a good cleanse. Your food may not be digesting properly, therefore it sits in your intestine and basically rots. I recently found out I am lactose intolerant. Was having stomach pain, bloated, food not digesting. Received allergy results back showing very high intolerance to milk. I stopped that & things have remarkedly cleared up. However, I take high doses of Vit C every day. One of the main reasons is that it "cleans" me out, which is removing toxins. The only Vit C I would recommend doing this with is called "Perque Potent Guard C". This is ascorbate powder, NOT ascorbic powder. Google it and read about the Perque Potent Guard C flush. I never heard of a Vit C flush before. My dr had me do it, and I have done several since, and you cannot believe how this cleans you out and makes you feel great. You will want to continue taking this daily. The flush instructions tell you how to figure out how much to take each day. I am currently taking between 6500 & 10,000mg per day & can go up to 25,000 if I choose. I feel the range I'm at now is very beneficial. Vit C is a natural detoxifier. Most people aren't aware of this benefit. Great for your immune system too. I need to stress my preference of only using Perque brand. It dissolves in water easily and has no aftertaste. Plus, it is easy on the stomach. Before I started using this Vit C regularly, in addition to foul smelling gas, I was getting pimples under my armpits. I found out that is one area toxins try to get out of your body. Vit C cleared this up. I hope this is helpful.

I developed the problem of foul smelling gas over 10 years ago.  Over the years I have tried many treatments, the only thing that worked for me was charcoal tablets.  I took 6 tablets a day for a few years and rarely had a recurrence, but the problem was still there if I didn't take the tablets or ate something which didn't agree with me.  About 6 months ago I was researching my problem on the internet and started reading about Grapefruit Seed Extract.  I bought some from my local health food shop called Citricidal from Higher Nature.  I started taking it 3 times a day and my problem completely went away.  I no longer take the charcoal and just take one dose of Grapefruit Seed Extract first thing.

    Hey jennyjames

Have you tried eliminating gluten from your diet and if yes have you tried a low residue diet sometimes too much fiber and our digestive tracts can’t take it. I had them really bad till I went gluten free and now having them bad off and on but menopause can also cause bad gas. Hope you find a fix!
