Smelly gas like sulphur and rotten eggs

Hi all. So embarrassed but don't know what else to do. I actually am getting seriously depressed as It Is so bad.

I have been getting really bloated and pass the most foul smelling gas ever, it stinks and lingers in the room. I'm having to air my bungalow every evening.

I eat relatively healthy, excercise regularly and am slim.

This has been going on solidly for 2 whole months. I have tried eating different things but i just keep getting this awful smell! Sometimes I feel like I'm going to shit myself!! I can't have people over and am scared to go out when I know I'll be in a small space. I gave up my job!!

I have had to do a stool sample, all clear. The doctors just say I have IBS. They gave me colofac (mebeverine) which did nothing! I don't know what the hell to do!!

PLEASE HELP

Have you been tested for Celiac?  Lactose intolerance is quite common for that and doctors when they can't figure out what's wrong with you intestinally, generally put it an umbrella diagnosis for IBS.

As for the lactose interolance, I know exactly how you feel.  It's like something died up in there and the smell is horrendous.  You need to avoid all dairy like the black plague.  Read all labels and if they indicate milk, don't eat or drink it.

I've switched to Almond milk and it has done wonders.  I also take a daily multivitamin to ensure I'm not missing out on some nutrients.

It sounds as though you have an overgrowth of Candida (the organism that causes vaginal thrush but which also lives in the gut) - it causes just those symptoms.  Take Acidophilus tablets for a week or two and see if it clears up. These tablets can be obtained from health food shops.  Not cheap but hopefully they will do the trick.  Good luck.

    Hi Jennyjames

I have never posted before but I felt compelled to when I read your post. I had this horrible problem for a year and cured it completely years ago by eliminating one small thing from my diet - food additive E223 or sodium metabisulphite. You'll see it in the ingredient list on the backs of packets. It's a preservative used mainly in processed meat like sausages, processed potato products like hash browns, and some dried fruit. Most people break it down and it's harmless, but if you are one of the people who can't break it down, when you mix it with water (and people are mostly water) it produces slphur dioxide, or rotten egg gas. A lot of it. If I don't eat it, no issues. If I do eat it, I pass rotten egg gas, and I mean I can clear a room, it's that bad. So I avoid it. It's worth a try. P.S. how I figured it out was I had my hair tested for allergies and sensitivities, and it came up positive in that test.

Hopefully your problem is solved by now, but if not...I saw another post concerning probiotics and highly recomend them. I alternate between Prescript-Assist and Healthy Trinity. Stay away from cheap drugstore brands though! If you haven't already, stop eating gluten, it's in a lot of food, not just bread and pasta. Avoid sugar and processed foods. That's a given. I found avoiding soy and dairy to be very helpful. I acually started with an elimination diet many years ago. It's really the only way to tell if something is not agreeing and is damaging your gut. I wasted so much time going to doctors and having them do the same tests over and over. If it doens't fit into their limited diagnoses, then it goes in a dump syndrome like IBS and you're told they can't do anything about it. Listen to your body, do some research, and keep asking questions. Best of luck to you.

    Dear Jenny,

24 years ago, along with constipation (which was not usual for me), this was the first symptom I had before I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  I remember clearly the dreadful stench.  Because it worried me I tried various dietary changes. Nothing helped.  Beacause I was diagnosed early I am still here and well.  I don't want to alarm you but forewarned is forearmed.  Take care.

    Hi jenny,

I allergic to garlic and raw onions......despite having had tests and nothing cominh back.positive the way my body reacts is testimony to the fact that my body doesn't like it.

Eating garlic and raw onions can turn the garlic into sulphur and it is sulphur that the body is allergic to, producing severe abdomimal.cramps until it passes throigh the system.

Peppermint oil drops into water and then drink it is the only thing to slightly alleviate the cramps.

Cream also has that effect on me too.

    Good luck

Probably some sort of unidentified parasite which may not show up on a fecal examination.

In college, I moved to Florida and developed horrible cramps during bowel movements that lasted all semester. Even though nothing appeared in stool sample, doc gave me meds anyway. Amazing how problem went away over night.

Same with my dog ... after suffering a year with IBS it turns out Coccidia was to blame. With medicine, year long problem went away over night.

Hi Jenny! I also have irritable bowel syndrome. I was having the same problem with the bad smelling gas. So much that I did not really leave home because the smell was so bad.  Finally I could not take it any longer and I went to my Gastroenterologist.  I told him about the embarassing problem.  He prescribed Flagyl for me.  It did seem to help.  I am not sure if my colon was inflamed or not. Something was definitely wrong. He did not really explain to me how the drug helps.  I need to see that doctor now but unfortunenately he is unavailable because of the holidays. I guess I will have to endure it for a while longer. I can understand how you feel.  It made my self esteem so low because I was smelly.

I keep myself clean and well groomed but I can not control this bad smell.  It is sickening.  Be encouraged and I hope things get better for you.

hi jenny I'm also having gas problem started few days ago I'm also thinking of trying charcoal tablets its also christmas in a few days so scared to eat anything and I love food but for me I think its milk because I have started eating cornflakes for breakfast also in my tea or coffee I use fresh milk as well

It is highly likely that it is indeed milk and that you are lactose intolerant.  Use a probiotic such as Lactaid (it comes in a pill as well as milk replacement) when you drink milk or eat ice cream.

Try taking Garlic out of your diet for about a week or two.  Garlic is a Huge producer of intestinal gas, and yes - it smells Horrible.

Did you ever find a solution? I am experiencing the same embarrassing issues and am so desperate to find a solution. I've tried digestive probiotics. They help, but haven't solved the smelly gas. I would like to try the fiber. do you eat a lot of protein?

I don't have a final solution.  I do know I cannot have dairy products!  I recently discovered that taking vitamin E was giving me gas odor.  I eat average amounts of protein and am aware that a number of fruits and veggies give me a problem, as well as sweets and fiber.

If I'm going out I take 2 fennel capsules with or after meals and charcoal caps if necessary. Also enjoy fennel tea.

I enjoy fennel tea as well.

i do know that I cannot have dairy!  Only drink lactaid milk.
