6 months out of TKR and I am pushing myself NOT to nap.  I have had no pain but still have the vice/tightness 3" above knee and 2" below.  I also have a numbness feeling.  The doctor said it could take a year or more before that feeling leaves.  I felt that everytime I went to PT she was doing more damage than good.  I stopped going.  One my appointment the doctor changed the prescription to the therapist and she only massaged my knee area and it made all the difference.  I do exercises at home.  Massages at therapy,  The doctor also suggested that I join a club with a pool and I don't have the money for it and for some reason my insurance nor Medicare pay. Then the pool monitor job became available at our complex, for the summer.  I applied and am in the pool every change I get, when no one there.  M therapist was so thrilled, that she measured me and I was back bending and straightening to perfect so she discharged me.  SO I guress if you can get into wter to exercise that would be awesome for you.  Stay positive and hang in there.

I'm 8 months now, the first  3 months were hard, mainly sleep issues but now back to  near normal, playing golf and badminton again  and rarely thinks about the knee now- walking down stairs still a bit cautious though.

Hang in there it does get better.  Tireness is normal as is weight loss, both bothered me but now weight returning to normal

Finally had the right outpatient therapist on Saturday morning and I am back on track.  Going into 4th week post op and doing great. Healing well and walking unassisted again which is a relief!  Slept through the night last night without any pain so that was a welcome change.  Climbed into husband's truck today but that was a little rough.  Was told I should be able to start driving in 2 weeks.  Keeping a positive attitude makes all the difference!

TKR 19th June 2017. Making progress but still some days with pain - usually after physio! Had 6/52 check up with consultant last week and he is pleased with ROM. Suggested ibroprofen to help pain and damp down inflammation expected with normal healing! Does help considerably and wound looks good but sensitive and "itchy sore" at times! Main issues now are problems sleeping and just so tired all the time. Seeing GP next week and see what he suggests. Maybe I just expected to bounce back faster from major surgery but have to learn to be a patient patient!! This forum and all the members -especially Chico and Jenny - have helped me so much!! Thank you everyone.

Hello everyone out there with total knee replacement. I found this blog while searching for an explanation to why I'm so fatigued 4 weeks post surgery. On a short shopping outing today I seriously thought I could collapse in the store. I'm wobbly and very weak feeling. I don't recall feeling this way after my first knee replacement 12 years ago. Is this somewhat normal for most of you?

    Hi Pam,

I'm also 6 weeks post op from a tkr and extremely tired.  Of course my husband was on vacation for 2 weeks so I was not able to relax very much but I am going to make up for that starting tomorrow!  Since you are also 6 weeks post op, is your ankle swollen?  I have also noticed that my lower back hurts too.  Don't know if this is to be expected.

Hello Christine, I am into 5 weeks post open. I'm just starting to slowly get some energy back. It feels like I'm living in a strangers body. I'm usually so active. My lower back and hip has given me more pain than the knee. Started right out of surgery. Waiting for MRI report. From all I have read, fatigue is a normal response for a percentage of some us.

As for your ankle being swollen, call your doctor about it. It could be the beginning of a blood clot. They are a big concern post op with knee surgery. This is why the compression socks are so important.

I am 3.5 weeks our from a bilateral tkr . I am fatigued beyond belief.  I'm trying to cut down on pain meds because I know that plays a part but man....I've never experienced anything like this before ! Is this normal or do I just need to push myself more?

      Karen,

I didn't have a bilateral, and I am now 3 months out from my right knee being replaced.  I was very fatigued until the last few weeks when I have gradually started to feel back to normal. I'm still napping at least once a day but feel better when I'm awake.  My doc suggested that the general anesthetic can make one feel very fatigued for a while.  Another person said she heard that for every hour one is under the general anesthetic, it takes a month to recover.  I doubt there is anything scientific on that comment but it did match my experience.  Hang in there and don't be too hard on yourself.  It is a difficult operation and recovery to go through and simply takes time to heal and get back to normal.

I am 5 weeks post op today. Just the past couple days has some energy started to return. I do not recall this extreme fatigue 12 yrs ago after my first knee replacement. I'm 65 yo now and I'm sure age is somewhat of a factor. With this weakness lasting so long it begins to scare you as though something else could be causing it. Thank goodness for blogs or I would have thought it was only me suffering from this fatigue . I wish doctors would counsel on all these things that can happen post op before surgery so you understand what's happening.

I am sorry u r tired, but glad to hear I am not the only one. I can stay home just a little while, knee replacement

8/3.  I am really tired of the pain and being tired.

Never again! I would not have another knee replacement if I had a third knee. Most of the problems are caused by people that don't care or just don't know how painful this is.

First knee replacement went a lot better.

Between a rehab facility , which was a joke, a

PA that shouldn't be in the doctor's office and doctors, I have suffered tremendously.

I do have one question!. I was in rehab last

December after total knee replacement. I

    received the itemized statement. The

Statement show that I got pain meds that I know I didn't get. A lot of days it shows 12  oxycodone 10/325 plus additional pain meds. There is no way. Anyone else out there?

The comments have been very helpful. Tomorrow I will be seven weeks post total right knee replacement. My rehabilitation has been very good, but I am still struggling with tiredness, lack of motivation, poor appetite. Apparently I need to simply realize that this is a longer process than I had anticipated. I have difficulty falling asleep at night (maybe because I am not drinking alcohol). It is encouraging to know that others share the same concerns.
