sore throat, globus

I have had a globus sensation that comes and goes. Weird things have been happening since the beginning of the the year. It all started after a took some rounds of antibiotics. My neck started feeling tight around the sides. It started getting worse and after a few months, It got so tight that I went to the ER twice cause I thought I was dying. I have had lots of tests but there are more to do. Ive had 2 barium swallows( one looking for abnormal blockage and on for a hernia), xrays, thyroid blood work, pepsin tests, and 3 scopes, everything came out fine. Ive been to several ENTs and nothing unusual showed up. The specialist assured me its not cancer.

I still havent done a ph test and havent had my esophogus scoped, just my throat which has cobblestones in it and also appears swollen at the voicebox.Ive tried reflux medicines on and off during these  periods, i was on protonix for a month with no improvement, the doctor did say to stay on it for 3 months but it make me feel nausious. Perhaps the worst symtom is I have had a sore throat going on 6 months now.

Does anyone with silent reflux also have globus and a cronic sore throat?

I've read thru your forum and I have been dealing with very similar issue for the past year. I have had 2 upper endoscopy, cameras into my esophogus, a manometry test (measures motility in the esophagus ), barium tests and more. Seen several.GI's and ENT. I am in California USA. I have been Sent to a specialist at UCLA clinic.

So far with all the tests they've run they know my throat and esophogus muscles are.not pushing food down very well...the manometry test showed that. They called it diffuse esophageal spasms. I have tried omeprazole for 6 months and it didn't help. They doubled the dose and I felt awful so I quit it all together.

Over the past year other symptoms have started. Weakness, fatigue, numbness and tingling in my hands and feet/calves. My throat will improve slightly for a week or two here and there. But then return to feeling like it swells with everything I eat. Globus sensation like food sticks all the time. It's terrible.

Ucla ENT specialist thinks I may have something called scleroderma. ...an auto immune disease. I see a Rheumatologist next month as well as a neurologist to look at other potential issues such as MS. Also following up with another GI at ucla since my barium tests showed that even though the throat is ok....they looked lower and finally saw that the food they gave me is sitting in the esophagus way too long.

Let me know if you are still dealing with this problem. All this started rather suddenly for me la at September after I felt like I was sick with a virus or cold. Best wishes

      Hi everyone.

So its been about a year and a half since this all started. I wish I had good news for everyone and could tell a story of how I healed myself but thats not the case.

To give an update, I have mostly the same conditions and they have evolved. I do not have a phlegmy throat but it it still tight from my adams apple to the top.

My upper palate "burns" and so does the back of my throat.

New symptoms now are ringing ears that I can feel radiate from my throat. I also have tingling hands now.

I have had a ph monitoring test which states I do not have gerd however my manometry states that I have indications of it, it also says I have a junction outflow obstruction.

Also, I have a bitter odd taste in my mouth.

My GI says that could be the beginning of achalasia

Hi, I've been going through similar issues for over a year now. I had a similar period of this about 15 yrs ago too...but it improved and had now come back full force.

I have been seeing dr's at ucla medical center. Before I went there I saw a ENT, GI and endocrinologist amongst other drs....have had several endoscopies, a manometry test, and tons of blood work. Manometry said "diffuse esophageal spasms"....I was given acid reflux meds to help with spasms (even though there is no sign of me having reflux). I stopped medication after 3 months. ...it was not helping with swallowing issues or feeling of food stuck in my throat. They increased the meds and I suddenly felt awful. ...couldn't hardly make my body function. ...was weak, dizzy etc. I stopped the meds and felt better in about a month.

So after I went to ucla I saw an ENT who did several video throat exams. ...she finally caught sought of my esophagus flap not closing while I swallowed. ...she said that mixed with all my symptoms led her to feel I have scleroderma of the esophagus. So then I followed up with a local rheumatologist who agreed. But now I'm being sent back to ucla to see a Rheumatologist who specializes in scleroderma. Also a GI Dr there as well as a neurologist. They want to make sure before diagnosis is confirmed. Also had barium tests which showed slight spasms. ...but when they looked lower in my esophagus and had me eat and drink a bunch of barium quickly, they saw that food sat for up to 1 minute in.my lower esophagus instead of normal 10-15 seconds.I don't know if this helps anyone here. ...but I will continue to update. -crystal

So today is superbowl day, feb 7 2016.

I read old forums and im always curious as to what conclusion there is for the original poster. Some forums are several years old.

I would like to give an update.

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for posting their replies.

Ok... its soon approaching the 2 year mark when I first took the antibiotics.

My current state is that the globus has gone down quite a bit however, I have other new symptoms.

I have had a burning back of the throat and upper palate that had developed in addition to the globus.

I have had multiple barium swallows and they all came back normal.

I have had a mamometry and ph study. The ph study says that the acid levels are normal however the mamometry study says theres indications of gerd. I have apparently a slight obstructive junction outflow meaning the lower esophageal sphincter doesnt like to relax and let food into my stomach. However, this was not what the barium swallow indicated.

The burning sensation is a level 4/10, its constant like I ate a hot pepper or something and its at the back of the throat, it never goes away, Ive tried alkaline water, PPis (for  short time), carafate, and more.

I noticed last week my tonsils were swollen and the doctor agreed, she gave me a 5 day course of antibiotics (zpac) which I was reluctant to take as I believe they are what caused my condition in the first place. She thinks I have strep throat but she didnt culture it.

I will go back soon and ask if she can swab it.

Also, Ive been developing headaches that I know are from the throat ache, I can feel the connection to my head.

Also, i have an odd bitter, salty taste all the time too.

I have taken MRIs and had xrays and all looks normal.

I have thought and read about my condition pretty much daily since ive posted and I still cant figure out whats wrong with me.

If I did have to guess, then I think I have a severe case of LPR but still its hard to say for sure since the test all came back normal including this uk test for pepsin.

    Hello

How have you been doing lately?

I have had this condition for 6 years already, along many other symptoms. It started when I was 23, in April 2010 after a tthroat infection

Have you tried muscle relaxants or anti depressants? I developed something called laryngeal sensory neuropathy. Anti depressants to calm nerve down helped. But I still have a few symptoms

    Take care

My symptoms are the same with you. My ent gave me antibiotics for sore throat. The pain went down a bit but sometimes it still bothers me. I'm on my fourth day of my 2nd set of antibiotics. I also have globus sensation and occasional pressure on my chest and tightness on my neck. I don't know what to do anymore. I don't respond well to ppi's. I'm on famotidine right now. I'm also eating probiotics and digestive enzymes. It's really affecting my life. If anyone have a solution out there, please help.

    Thanks for all your replies.

I want to start from the begining again. Im 41. Male. 2 years ago I took some antibiotics. I thought I had an allergic reaction. Im not sure if I will ever find out but thinking about it, it would be good to try to find out. I thought I had gerd, a slow onset of anaphylaxis but now I dont know. I had lots of phlegm, My throat closed up and is still tight to this day. Its fairly sure its globus but and actual inflammation. Its tight all the way up. I have swelling under my ears and under my jaw. My doc says its fat but I know its more than that. I have a burning palate and tongue. I have a bitter taste.

Ive done 2 barium swallows and several scopes including one to my stomach. I just had an ultrasound and im waiting for the results. I have recently gotten this heavy feeling in my legs along with numbness. This is also in my hands. I have head pressure too.

The chronic illness drives me mad and It makes me mad as in angry all the time. Im not sure if its better undiagnosed or if it would be better to know that I have some type of illness. Ive been waiting for it to get better but it only seems to get worse.

I wonder now if they missed something. Sometimes I think I may have cancer. Bloodwork came out fine. I havent had a needle biopsy but there arent any major lumps anywhere except in my throat. ha

I feel pressure and pain around the gland area in my face just near my ears. If one problem lets up and starts to feel better then the other one gets stronger. so frustrated and annoyed.

Hi Jay, (I'm also a Jay haha) I stumbled across this after looking up symptoms I've been having.. it sounds about the same as you've had. Which to be honest at first a little disheartening since you still haven't found out what the issue is. I'll start off by going over how it all started for me.

About two months ago I had gotten sick, I'm not one that normally goes to the doctor but after getting constantly told by my wife and mother to go get checked out, I finally caved. Turned out I had a bad case of bronchitis.. they prescribed me codine cough medicine and a ZPac ... After a few days I felt much better, but then about a week later I had a really bad reaction to the Z PAC, I broke out in blistering rashs on my head and chest and my throats started to swell to the point it was hard to breathe.. I thought maybe I had strep. So I went back to the doctors and they and they said it was a allergic reaction to the Zpac and prescribed me prednisone.. That really helped and after a few days I felt great again...

After I ran out of the prescription ( it was only a weeks worth) I noticed I felt like I had something stuck in my throat ,some days were worse than others. One night only one side swelled up so bad it felt like I was constantly choking on the inside of my throat like it was sliding down(if that makes sense). And I actually didn't sleep at that night but still made it work some how. It hasn't been that bad since and luckily my sister had some prednisone (her husband has chrones) so any time it feels worse I've taken a few of those and it make a it go away completely.

Flash forward to last week I started noticing it got a lot worse when I ate cheese.. which sucks because I love cheese. But I still have it everyday, at certain times it worse than others. My wife keeps asking if it hurts but I reassure her it doesn't but it's just very uncomfortable.

I'm positive it was all caused from a reaction to the Zpac. But it's been driving me nuts and I keep thinking its something bad like cancer. I'd almost like to see if I can get a prescription for prednisone because honestly I feel "normal" again when I was taking it. But I fear the doctors just giving me the run around. I'll follow up if anything changes.

Well.. First of All I would like to thank everyone for their inputs. Since everyones body and situation is a little different, I think it would be hard for most people to figure out what their problem is by reading these threads, however, it may give some people comfort and knowledge if they do have similar symptoms and hopefully lead them to a proper diagnosis of which I have yet to receive.

Here is my current status... I have lots of "things" going on now and I wish I had positive news for everyone but I dont.

My throat is still sore and tight but the phlegm had lessened quite a bit.

I had my tonsils taken out this year because I thought that could be the problem but it didnt help much and I question if that was the right thing to do but its already done now so theres no going back.

I have another issue that I do not believe is related but I wanted to share anyways...

I have had xrays and scans and they confirm that I have degenerative disc disease. My neck is very stiff and sore and it radiates to the back of my head.

I also have a "burning" sensation in the front of my neck. I figure that the stiffness in the neck, shoulders and head pain could be from the DDD but its hard for me to see the connection with the burning in the front of my neck.

When I turn my neck I hear a crunching sound but a therapist told me it was not abnormal.

I also have a burning mouth from my palate to the back of my tongue and in my throat... this is why I question if I have LPR/GERD because I dont think it would make my palate burn. I also have an odd taste in my mouth and I read that it could be from the irritated nerves. My throat is still tight too.

Oh... and I had my thyroid checked about 6 months ago and there were a few nodules. The doctor told me to just monitor them. I have researched that they are quite common but it still makes me wonder if its the big c.

    With all these problems....

It is a big irritation and bad discomfort... earlier in this year the headaches got so bad that I went to the ER again and they couldnt find anything as usual.

Once again.. thanks for reading my posts and please share your stories as it gives comfort to others who are in the same or similar situation.

Also... please share your age, I feel this is important for people to know.

      Hello jay40m,

I have read many of your posts and I can feel you as I am in the same boat. I am suffering since last May after a strong course of antibiotics ...before taking them  I was completely healthy

I read that you had a manometry, barium and endoscopy. Did you ever have phmetry along with impedance test? What taste did you have? bitter, acidic? Are you taking any medications for reflux or sth?

I had constant lump in my throat and the last two weeks I started to experience pain on my thoracic spine, I also have a swollen gland in my neck sometimes. After christimas I am going to visit my doctor again.

I was wondering if all these symptoms are due to vitamin D deficiency? Have you check your vitamin D?

I wish you to find again your health. I know it very difficult but try not ot stress and thinking of the worst senarios.

      Mary

SAVE THE TESTS : go to your local pharmasist ask for : 10mg cetirizine (Zyrtec)

Your Lump will be gone, trust me 7 yrs of this  . Finally found cure.

Its low level hystamine release by your body , dont ask where from what as the tests cost $$$$$$$$$ , just take this under 5 Bucks anti histamin tablet 24hr version if you can. also benadryl will work too but makes you feel drowsey

for how long have you taken the meds, before you've noticed that you are free from globus  and how often do you take the pill?

      thanks.

      1 to 2 hrs , there is 2 histamine body reactions , H1 H2

one is solved by Allergy tablet like "Zyrtec" google it

The other is H2 you need a antacid RANITIDINE TABLET,

take both then figure out if your body has H1 H2 histamine release .

Hello. How is everyone doing? Just had an ENT appointment today, upper scope came back clear and I'm having a barium test next week. Burning throat, feels like reflux but just in the throat, big globus with all trimmings (difficulty swallowing initially but no problems after few gulps; throat tightness; massive anxiety; you name it i have it). Has anyone tried the antihistamines yet? I tried cetyrizine last week for a day, no effect. Perhaps should have taken for longer? ...

Hi there I suffere with terrible anxiety I have had this feeling for about 2 weeks I'm having a ultrasound on my throat next Thursday ive been experiencing a lump on my right side but I only really feel when looking left also like it clicks really strange all my muscels are really tight I'm having about 5 panic attacks a day with it I'm only 26 and have a 19 month old son I'm really scared about it, but it doesn't affect how I eat or drink, does this sound about right for globus? X

Hi Charlotte. Globus is a terrible beast. It can come with almost any symptom you can think of. Not long now until your ultrasound so just hang in there. I'm not even sure that what I have is globus, still need tests but i find that if i have a tipple or two the feeling fades away (obviously I DO NOT recommend that you do the same and see if eases your symptoms). What i'm saying is that at least in my case anxiety plays the most horrible tricks on my mind and make me think that anything remotely out of ordinary going on with my body is a sign of something serious. Been there so many times i don't even trust my judgment on what's real and what isn't . So you're definitely doing the right thing and get yourself checked. Once you'll hear that everything looks normal you'll be able to relax and symptoms will disappear. In my case the one thing I need to address is the actual anxiety which seems to pop up at random times and with no apparent reason - it will immediately justify itself by finding some (real or imaginary) physical ailment to cling on. What a mess. You're doing fine and you have your child to think about and i'm sure you will find the strength to do so. Chances are that there's nothing wrong with you. Xxx

Hello everyone! I hope all of you are doing well.

First of all, damn antibiotics! Because it seems like most of the issues here started with a course of antibiotics.

My symptoms started when I was using acetone for my nails, due to too much inhalation I guess, I got constant coughs, then the next day, since I also have allergies and sinus inflammation, I got severe post nasal drips. The next day, my sore throat started and I also had white spots on my tonsils which I normally do because of sinus issues. But this time it hurt too. I went to the doc and she gave me a high dosage of amoxicillin 1000, 3 times a day for 7 days! It was so strange to me because in my country we only have amoxicillin 250 and 500...never 1000. I am in Germany now to study btw. The doc wasn't even sure if my issue was bacterial, I must add. But she didn't get a swab. Anyways, I was getting better until on the 14th day of my illness, my throat hurt again but this time on one side only! And I had dry mouth. I had severe nausea as well and couldn't eat anything, so I went to the ER because it was a Friday evening...on my birthday too sad the doc there took a look in my throat and said it was fungus! He said after taking antibiotics, all the good bacteria is dead and there's this yeast overgrowth now. They gave me antifungal suspension and also omeprazole because I knew I was too stressed and still am so nervous here because I don't speak German well either as my master's program is in English. Anyways, on Monday, I went to an ENT doc just to make sure the fungus was not spreading down my throat. She took a swab test (which after 6 days the results aren't ready yet). It adds to my anxiety, I'm almost dying. She examined my throat and said the yeast isn't much down your throat but it's better to swallow that antifungal solution to be on the safe side. I had only 7 omeprazole pills and only 2 are left. I didn't notice a difference because I think it's silent reflux anyways. I also have bitter taste in my mouth esp after eating. With the antifungal medication that I've used for almost a week, I was feeling better. But again last night, I felt a burning and pain sensation on the side back of my tongue and then left side of my throat. I feel there is something there. When I swallow saliva and put my fingers on that side of neck, it feels like it clicks or there is a blockage that saliva has to pass...it's ot an easy and smooth swallow, hard to explain. It also hurts a bit only on the left side. Now I don't even know what that is for...the yeast which should be almost over OR the gerd thing because I'm soooooo stressed. I've been feeling unwell for 3 weeks and lost so many days of school and work. I have to work sad I have to go back to nornal and get my life back sad I'm 31 btw. Now I'm starting to think I have some sort of oral cancer even though I don't smoke. Haven't had alcohol in the last 3 weeks and cut sugar for a few days too. My symptoms don't go away sad how are you all doing? I need some support, I'm almost always alone in tgis conutry with lots of responsibilties, bad language skills and a crushed mood/mind :'(

I forgot to mention that my mouth is still so dry and almost lack saliva sometimes. After taking so many antibiotics pills and now antifungal solution, I feel my mouth can't feel normal again. Now my throat either sad

I wish you all good health and happiness. And I hope I hear back from you.
