Still bloated after gallbladder removal?

Hello guys it's me again. So I have been having a couple of issues after my gallbladder removal on August 5th. My stomach seems to feel very full now. This happened maybe 3-4 days after my surgery. I also started getting nauseous. But what bothers me the most is this bloated feeling. It's very uncomfortable and I can't eat much because I feel so stuffed and the nausea makes it worse. If I do try to eat my stomach literally feels like it's about to burst and it makes it hard to breathe. I've been walking here and there maybe 20 blocks each time as I was told walking will make the gas leave. But I feel so bad I'm not sure if anyone has experienced bloating this long? A friend of mine said her bloating and has left in a week. Is it possible to take ginger ale to help me burp, maybe gas x, anything? I just want to feel good again and I honestly feel sick. Don't think I'm constipated and I've been having bouts of diarreah and soft stool.

I am now at home like some of you feel full bloated and sick if eat half of what I normally eat due to my small stomach, also loosing weight. I just want to know if anyone has had the same.

How are things with your stomach now?

I had my gallbladder removed in Oct 2017, I am nearly 2 months over it, and suffering terrible with my stomach, 2 weeks ended up in A&E dept, and they told me i have gastritis, i have lost a little weight but still look so big as my tummy is huge and so bloated, I am now suffering so badly with phantosmia which is a constant burning smell that comes with headache and eye pain, I am so depressed and stressed over all this, dreading waking up every day to discover its still there, smell is suffocating me, has anyone else suffered like this with this smell? Need some real advice please

    Hi all

I'm three days out from the keyhole gallbladder removal surgery and was feeling bloated, so I googled this and fortunately found you. I'm 58 and the gallbladder problem was accidentally found while checking for a possible heart attack. I had an exertion heart attack while lifting last January and didn't feel any pain so I didn't go to the ER until I had problems breathing. I received three stents and have since recovered for the most part but did loose 20% of my heart tissue.

I had what I thought was a no pain heart attack and went to the ER. After testing they found a tumor in my gallbladder. My gallbladder was acting very odd when I ate meat so I did quit eating beef and pork. Often it would begin to pulsate and feel like a rapid thumping.

What I noticed after the meds wore off is that I felt better but very bloated. So what I was looking for was info on bloating and can tell that this is somewhat normal after this type of procedure after reading the many posts here.

The surgeon told me every thing went well and I am looking forward to better days. Its this bloating that concerns me as this is a first for me. I have never felt this full and have never looked this bloated. I haven't been using the pain meds they prescribed and can feel a bit of pain in the area that they must have pulled my gallbladder through. It is bearable. I was told not to walk or exercise until my post op appointment. No lifting either. I am allowed to walk around the house.

It seems that some of you may be walking the bloat out. I was wondering how long you waited to begin walking.

    Thanks

    Bill

Hi Billiam, had open surgery and was walking the day after the op, in fact that's how I got home, walked the hospital grounds to see what came from my drain pipe, nothing did and I was allowed home, one week after surgery I walked a mile a day,

still do, Greek yogurt helps the bloat, really, got to be proper Greek yogurt.and lots of water, all the best,

I was told to walk in the hospital and encouraged to walk as much as possible at home. They said it would help me heal faster but not to over do it to the point of pain.

I had a gastric bypass in June 2016 and I will tell you the pain after my gallbladder removal was so much worse and  I am still having pain

From that surgery. The bloat is severe enough and painful enough that I got a referral to a gastrointestinal Doctor. I also had very bad gas at the time. I didn’t want to leave the house !! I was told to guit eating the low calorie, high fiber bars. I was told that there is a substitute for sugar in them like Zyletol ? Please forgive me as I am told that anything that ends in OL do not eat it. My gas stopped and now only get it with certain foods( like Mexican foods. Please if someone knows what the ingredient’s are called please correct me.  I was also put on amitiza for constipation and that has helped a little with that pregnant and the  ready to burst stomach !!

I'm 2 years out still have issues with certain foods, diarreah,to constipation ,trying to find the happy medium

Have you been better with the bloating ??

I had a gallbladder surgery last April. When I saw your post I was sorry for you but also relieved that I’m not crazy.

I had a lot of gas and bloat but my surgeon assured me it was normal. I still had the same pain as before the surgery and he said that was normal. So after a couple weeks of this I went to my family doctor and he said it wasn’t normal. My stomach looked like I was nine months pregnant hard as a rock and felt ready to burst !!! and a little egg shaped.

I was given a referral to a gastrointestinal Doctor. When I got into see them it has been about 4 months and still that godawful gallbladder pain ! Nausea, gas and so on.

I have had so many tests and such that I don’t even want to go to any doctor.

The doc did help me with the terrible gas. I had been eating a lot of low cal, low carb and high fiber meal and snack bars. I was tol there is something in the low cal bars and it ends or has OL in the word. That was easy I threw them out and now I only get gas on occasion usually from something I ate like Mexican food: I was not having that pain every day at this point . I would have that severe bloat and no pain for a few days and then it came back again!! I am literally afraid to eat or drink much at all.  The bloat is usually there still!!

but that pain has finally stopped and we don’t know why ??So here it is Christmas Eve morning and my bloated, painful and unsightly egg shaped stomach is still here. I am p****d ofcoarse because I haven’t been able to wear my clothes. I took some lactose before my protein drink to see if that helped. Nope !! I have drank 7 up but can not burp. I never really could anyway. I am not constipated and I have checked side effects for all my meds and zip. So after Christmas even more tests. The bloating is the only problem left now.  The other symptoms come and ho now.

I am curious if you  have at this point managed to feel better and have managed to resolve the symptoms you were having ???

I had gallbladder removal surgery on November 19, 2017 & I have these awful acidic belches that taste awful, also my stomach still feels bloated, also diarrhea regularly, after a normal bm, and very bad acidic stomach, which I use tums for, although tums & similar products are truly bad for our bodies. If this all wasn’t bad enough...those 6 bums in the far back of the tounge have an odd sensation, prickling & stinging mainly at night when I attempt to go to sleep, I must suck on ludens cough drops or I’m unable to stop coughing, it’s that irritated! I’be been to the Doctors 2x’s for this & once to the Ear Nose Throat specialist about this, yet they find nothing wrong. Does anyone else experience these symptoms, & what do you do for them? Thanks for your help.

Hi all, late post to this but newbie on the site.

I just had my GB out 56 hours ago and I am experiencing the same symptoms as many of you. Bloating, nausea, discomfort brought on by eating only minimal amount, mostly fruits and vegetables. I feel like the only thing I can reliably eat are strawberries. Did all it any of you get relief to your symptoms? I had it removed because eating prior to my surgery was causing all these same symptoms. I find the discomfort is less when I'm sitting or haven't eaten in many hours. I'm hoping this does not continue very much longer. I also am getting this pop feeling where my GB used to be when I am standing and breathe deeply or when I try to roll over. This is maddening. I hope everyone else is feeling better, both for your sakes and so I have hope for relief.

The symptoms you have seem to be rather normal after surgery.  Every body is different as to how long these symptoms last. Part of the procedure blows up your belly cavity so they have room to work. Pain, gas and bloating are symptoms of that too. I had my gallbladder out last April and have all those symptoms still as many on his site seem to also. I get pain so bad I have to go to ER. The pain is just like the pain I had when my gallbladder was infected !!! I do know that diet makes a huge difference for a lot of people. There is a ingredient in low cal high fiber treats that is called Sacrulose ( hope that is spelled right... lol ) any way this andnother food additives that have a OL

In the name causes bloating and severe stinky gas. That is what my Gastro Doctor says. I cut that out of my diet and the severe gas went away. I learn something new almost daily as to what causes me to have issues. I am still looking for an answer !! I wish you the best and hope your symptoms will go away in a few weeks.

Hi Lori, the weird part to me was that right after the surgery I felt a little bloated from the gas but now I feel worse 64 hours later. The first night I slept great, now the pressure is so much I just feel sick Everytime I try to sleep. It hurts to void and I'm voiding small amounts but the bladder is emptying. I've been to the ER twice since the surgery, once because the bloating was so bad I couldn't breathe well and expand my lungs the other time to make sure the bladder was emptying. I has an easier time recovering from open surgery on my spine than laproscopy. Pain doesn't really get to me as I have a really high tolerance. Bloating and nausea though are really irritating. After 64 hours I still haven't had a #2 either despite eating some amount. And now the bloating doesn't seem to be caused by eating but is just always present and sickening.

Has anyone else had the "pop" feeling where their GB used to be when creating deep? Is it a gas bubble, the clip (s) they use in the the ducts, ugh.

      I hope you feel better.

I had my surgery in April. I am still bloated, gassy and have a lot of nausea. I had a gastric bypass in June of 2016 and had none of these problems. I am bloated so bad I feel I will pop !!! I have been to the ER three times for the same pain that I had when my gallbladder became infected. Severe ! Awful !

I have been to my Gastro Doctor and had test after test. I am so tired of no answer. Sometimes I have gas that is very painful and horrible smell. Last weekend I went to ER again and they wanted to do all the usual that they have done before. I was thinking it could be my pancreas so I Demanded ! A cat scan. The scan showed I was severely constipated. I have done preps for 2 days for tests about 2 months ago. I have OIC and take 5 100mg stool softeners a day , I take 4 200 mg Amitiza for OIC each day. I have Bowel movement every day. I drink a tea called smooth move every other night for costipation it produces a BM in 6 to 12 hours. My stomach is so bloated that my 6 year old grand daughter asked me if I was pregnant !!! So the ER says I’m full of s**t... lol

And I feel as if I still have no answers ! The ER gave me a strong laxative to make me go more than the 1 or 2 times a day ! Get this. The medicine causes bloating and nausea and really bad Gas !!!! Very Frustrated.::

Ok so I had gallbladder surgery in Oct 2017, here it is Feb 2017 just like most of you I still get bloated. I had serious scarring from so many attacks, and the surgeons were only able to remove about 70% of the bladder. The remaining 30% is attached to my liver and pancreas. I typically will awake with minor pain from the right side in the morning, but not bloating, however to maintain regular movements I found V8 juice allows my system to regulate itself within an hour of from waking, however there is a caveat, the V8 causes me to bloat and it takes until late afternoon /evening for it to subside. The pain I experience daily, on a scale of 1-10 is mostly a 1, on occasion a 2, but it certainly beats the 11, I went through for 12 hrs on a regular basis before.

So here it is 2 months after the surgery and I get pain from the Pancreas/gallbladder region, and occasionally on the left side where the stomach and intestine hookup. The pain got up to the 5-7 level and I ended up back in the hospital to find out what was going on. A CAT scan later showed no problems, but with minor gas present, however the pain was still there. Percocets were prescribed for 10 days,, after the 7th the pain went away. Cause was still undetermined just as the spasms were undetermined.

To limit the bloating, I had to give up coffee and milk, and I'm still checking on different things that cause it. Coke Zero causes bloating but regular Coke dosen't. I drink 3 bottles of water daily, and neither Rum nor Scotch cause the bloat. I found that broiled fish doesn't cause it either. Sushi is my favorite and I've had no problems, but if I eat Sausage/bacon, fried chicken etc does cause some bloating, but not much. Ground chicken instead of ground beef, lean meats, and if the oil is drained really well no problems. French fires cause bloating, and pain, but potatoes and any kind of rice in general doesn't cause either, just your standard flatulence.

The medicines I'm taking are Nexium before any high fat food (also helps with bloating) don't need it for fish. I'm sucking down Alka Seltzer to eliminate nausia. Tums work well when the pain is on the left side. I generally have 1 movement a day, but depending on what I ate the night before it's not uncommon for 2-3 As for the continuing pain, I spoke with a couple people and they said they had pain 6-8 months after surgery

I had mine taken out some 25 years ago. Had experience some bloating and acid reflux on and off. I usually take beano just before I eat. And it always work for me. I also have the IBS. But this doesn’t really bother me. I have been eating meat and I guess my body already adjusted to all kinds of food that I rarely get bloated. My not gaining weight probably is due to the fact that I eat only twice a day (hearty breakfast and lunch, seldom do I eat anything at dinner time and I binge on weekends.  I been drinking mineral water from time to time.  The didn’t realize that GB removal was this bothersome to majority of the people here. Mine was open cholecystectomy by the way. I don’t know if the keyhole type of surgery gives these after surgery effects over an open cholecystectomy because my daughter who had a laparoscopic cholecystectomy a week ago has the same post op experience with ththe people in this forum. I hope everyone gets better in time.
