Struggling with weight

Posted , 7 users are following.

For ages my weight has been fairly steady but recently I have piled on the pounds; 9lbs in 6 weeks. I feel so heavy and the dresses I have just bought no longer fit me. I am exercising and eating healthily, including protein which I eat first but each day I am heavier. Has any one else experienced rapid weight gain?

Oh yes, I can identify with this - the weight gain is awful, and I'm doing my best to try and lose some because it's not doing me any good. It's very upsetting when it starts piling on, I have gained 2.5 stones since I finished work 5 years ago, and I'm now a size 18 ( i was a size14 for years ), so I'm trying to keep myself in check. It's very easy though to reach for a chocolate bar when I'm feeling down and depressed...............

Hi Wendy, yes chocolatesmile our local farm shop stocks a lovely lemon meringue chocolate bar. The price is usually enough to put me off buying it. I'm due to work part time soon so I hope to have more time to prepare my meals more carefully. Apart from that I really don't know what to do; it's such a struggle and as you say, upsetting.

Hahaha!! The chocolate bar sounds delightful - I love farm shops, we actually live on a farm and have a shop about 2 miles away, which stocks all sorts of lovely chocs and foods - I daren't go often!! I am hoping that I will get more exercise in Spring, as we have started a Trout fishing business and also rent out stables, and I will have to start taking part as I can't leave it all up to my in-Laws ( my husband still works full time in a regular job ). Once I have the motivation, I should be able to get out a bit more, and hopefully feel better. It's all about getting over that depression, which I think is the worst part of Fibro - if we are depressed, then everything seems 10 times worse!! Hope the job goes well for you - I hate not working as I have too much time to think about symptoms xx

i have a friend who is on alsorts of antidepressants her weight goes up and down like a yoyo depending on what shes taking

so i would say that if your antidepresants and steriods this would proberly be the cause .of weight gain.

Hi Caroline, in the past 3 years I have gone from a size 8 to 14/16. I've put on 4st in weight and it's all over. I don't know if it is being more immobile that has caused it, medication and cortisone injections or the menopause but what ever it is, I can't even shift a pound! I am aged 51 is anyone of a similar age where we can maybe put it down to hormones?

Hi Gizmo, I am 54 and at first I was wondering whether it could be hormonal. Like yourself, I have gone from a size 8 to 14 but I'm now in my 7th week of weight gain; I've also been struggling to lose weight before now and barely managed just to keep it steady. I can manage with the pain, stiffness etc but it's the weight that really bothers me.

Hi Caroline I understand just how you feel - the weight gain really upsets me too and I can't shift any of it. I have gone from under 8 st to 12 stone and I am puffy too! I no longer recognise myself. I'm so desperate to lose some of this weight I've been looking at certain slimming aids but rather scared to try them :-( x

Hi Caroline I've piled the weight on since I startedI taking Pregabalin which could be the culprit. Does anyone else agree? Huge hugs. S xx

Hi Sukest, I think mine has a lot to do with the depressions I have suffered. 5 years ago, we moved into the country, and Winter is pretty rotten around here. I do drive, but with not working, it is so easy not to bother making an effort to go out and about. At first I would walk around the fields every day - I had 2 Shetland ponies and was busy with them, but as my hands became worse with osteo, I sold them to a friend, so now I have no reason to go out, and I just potter around the house when the weather's bad. I have become lazy - but it is difficult to motivate myself when I feel sore and stiff all the time. I can't blame drugs as I only take Propranalol, think I need a kick up the backside! Lol!! xx

Hi Wendy, I am currently on a low dose of propranolol for tachycardia caused by a drug reaction; I sm trying to reduce it as I am recovering. Apparently it can cause weight gain although there's nothibg mentioned in the leaflet, more online.

Hi Wendy, I do feel for you. It can be so hard to motivate ourselves especially in the winter. I tend to potter too and it is such an effort just to take the dogs out, especially when it's horizontal rain. At least the weather is brightening up now.

Hi, I have heard that pregabalin can cause weight gain. I haven't used it myself, just duloxetine which I reacted badly to: in hospital for 6 days as a result.

Hi Wendy  I am so sorry to hear how down you are feeling, have you had your vit D levels tested? Mine were the lowest that they could be so I've started taking the 1000 level. I don't go out and if I have to for a doctors appointment my stress levels go through the roof. I think that you are wrong to say or think that you need a kick up the backside, at least you get dressed there's days when I don't even do that! Your not alone in your feelings so please hang in on there, huge hugs. S xx

Pregabalin..I can vouch for that. Were on it for 8 months only my weight increased, along with other dreadful side effects. Made me feel drunk all the time sluring words could'nt hardly make a sentence.. Asked dr to take me off them, he refused..So I weaned myself off them, took a while but did it and LOST 12lb

Hi Anne that's wonderful you must be delighted. Can I ask did the weight just drop off and in what timescale? I don't have as many problems with it as much as you did though, it must have been awful for you and scary if you hadn't been sure that it was the Pregabalin. As for your doctor refusing to help you is again awful, I told mine that I thought I wanted to come off it and she asked me, if I was sure and what about the pain, fair enough when I tried the pain was really bad so I gave up and went back on them!  She supported my decision either way, I'd look into getting a new doctor if I were you. S xx

I lost the weight within two months which is pretty good. But can't seem to shift it off my legs! confusing! I do have a new doc, as I have recently moved so I am hoping things will now improve. He has arranged for me to go and see a Pain Specialist, but can't see that doing any good. I will be talking to them about my findings with the Oramrph though, as I am now a little concerned..Regards...Annebiggrin
