Supplements and Menopause

Does anyone take supplements to help with Menopause? Which ones do you take and how has it helped?
i take Magnesium which has really helped with my sleep. I also take ubiquinol zinc and Vitamin B. I've tried Black Cohosh and Ginseng not sure if they have had any effect at all.
i do an hour of workout everyday but of late finding myself tired. I'm taking a multi vitamin with extra iron but still get out of breath sooner. I just completed a half marathon in November but I just can't seem to get the energy to train for another.

And how do you find the time to work out and train? On another discussion we are talking about the idea that at our age we supposedly have more 'me time', when many of us still work, have elderly parents and may still have school age children living at home.

I take Vit B for mood and migraines. Magnesium for sleep and anxiety. Vit D to stop hair loss. Iron for energy and hair loss. Primrose Oil for breast pain/cysts and general hormones. I dip in to herbal tinctures the week before my period - agnus castus for hot flushes and ashwagandha for the sort of anxiety that would stop me sleeping. I have tried other things but the ones above have all helped to remove/reduce my symptoms.

Hi Kate
My hair is super thin, has the vitamin d helped you with that? I need to do something or I'll end up with a wiglet or a comb over 😂 xx

Selenium helps with that.

I think that hair loss was one of the most distressing symptoms for me. I read a lot of slightly different views about what my body was "obviously" lacking but I honestly think it is probably slightly different for each person. I notice my hair starts falling out when I am firstly low in iron (I've been low in various degrees since I was pregnant 11 years ago - from low energy and hair loss, to drumming in my ears and being unable to stand up, so I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of when I start to become deficient ☺☺! Then if I forget my magnesium and vit B for a few days, I'll notice some hair loss. Third in importance would be the oil of evening primrose because it helps to regulate my hormones generally. Finally , I noticed that I had more hair loss in the spring and it seemed to be when I gave up taking Vit D3 because the sun had come out. Now I keep taking it and I don't seem to be losing so much hair. Peri and the actual menopause puts a woman's body under the most colossal amount of on-going pressure, that for me, supplements are a game-changer. If I were to offer one piece of advice it would be to buy supplements from a reputable manufacturer as opposed to a cheaper distributor. They will be considerably more expensive, but they seem to be more effective and potent. And I really baulked at spending this money on me, but since I would probably be flat out in bed without them, I had to make that investment. Wishing you the best of luck x

Hi Kate,
I suffer from hair loss plus many other meno symptoms and have recently invested in evening primrose, a multivitamin tab, vit d caps, magnesium and b vits... I don't think they are particularly high strength so just normal... do you take just a normal dose of these or high strength for hair loss? Also, you say buy a good brand... so not from a shop on the high street? Sorry for all the questions - I'm just desperate to feel better!!
Thanks.
AJ.

Hi AJ I am hoping that the moderator will let me reply with the brands that have helped me. If my next reply doesn't get through I think there might be a way to personal message. So next message coming through in a minute.....

I buy my Vit D, magnesium and Vit B complex from Biocare. The vit D is high strength liquid bio which means it is absorbed easily. The vit b is also one which can be easily utilised by the body. Primrose Oil comes from cheaper on line store - I think it is harder to muck up primrose Oil! Personally I would avoid high street stuff if possible except for the iron I take called Spatone. It's basically iron rich water in sachets which are incredibly effective. They restored my energy when I lost pints of blood a few years ago. Best of luck x

Hi Kate
I buy from the supermarket shelves and have done for years, now I'm wondering if I'm getting the full benefit! I've taken supermarket brand evening primrose for about 30yrs and it has really helped me, I also started taking supermarket brand VitB complex ten years ago to help with hair loss, that worked as well, though it was at about the time of my last ever period and I think hair loss tends to halt after that, in fact mine although thinner did thicken back up a bit, but not unfortunately back to how it used to be 😦
Just wondering now if I need to visit a well known high street shop for my supplements?

Hi Annette I would suggest (and I'm not an expert) that if they work for you then don't change. I would love to be able to use high street supplements. In fact my iron can be got on the high street and the primrose Oil (although both are cheaper on line). I think it is such trial and error that if something works, then stick with it. The natural iron was the biggest change in getting my hair back; but again one brand has worked fantastically and one didn't at all! Best of luck x

I have a major issue with iron as it totally stops me going to the loo!! Even natural liquid iron...
The multi-vitamins I am taking at the mo have 2.1mg iron in and I'm struggling again but hoping to try to keep with them as I do feel i need it!
Think the moderator has stopped your message to me Kate!! 😕

Hi Kate
Thank you for replying, I didn't know that iron was good for hair!! I was on it for a few weeks after my last ever period because of a six week heavy blood loss which had to be stopped with medication, then was prescribed iron tablets, I might buy some just to see if there is a difference! I'm sure I rattle with all the supplements haha 😃 I'm ten years post meno and still getting symptoms, oh the joys..... 😃

Hey AJ
I used to have real issues with my iron levels, up and down all the time. I take hrt and thats helped to regulate, but I swear my hubby came up with the best solution. Once a month we eat lambs liver, spinach and sweet potato. You've got iron in the liver, and the vitamin k in the sweet potato helps absorbtion. For the first time in 6 years, I've had 3 blood tests with iron levels within the normal range. May be worth a go xx

Thanks Annette
Butt away! It's good to hear that it's not just me. I think the sweet potato has been the game changer. I've never been a fan of liver so if you like it thats half the battle, but I'd much rather suffer that than ruin my stomach with the tablets 😁 xx
