Swelling after hydrocelectomy

Just wondering if anyone has had the same experience I have had following a hydrocelectomy. I am now 10 weeks post op and still have some swelling (egg size) I saw my doc about 5 weeks after surgery and he didnt seem concerned and doesnt want to see me again till December. I have read it can take 3-6 months for all swelling to subside but I was just curiouse if anyone has had the same problem as me as I am still kind of nervous.

Hello i just had my surgery 6 days ago. My testicles are probably a lol smaller than a softball. I been reading some of your info. I know it's normal for the swelling but did anybody get alot of pain right on top of the testicles and when you walked? I get a lil pain on the cut. But most of my pain come when I walk or sit down. Like if I am sore. But when I am laying down I get no pain. It that normal? I don't see my doctor till 3 weeks he said.

Yes everything you described is normal I would invest in some tight briefs if you don't already have some they will help with the pain and swelling.

Thank you for the insight all of you have shared about this distressing and confusing situation. I would like to share my story which is not unlike all the other stories I am reading about. I went to my urologist with a complaint about my right testicle, it had been growing larger little by little over the last 20 years but it was not painful until last year. After having many tests, ultrasounds, CAT scans and a full body MRI the practitioner diagnosed me as having a bilateral hydrocele, large hydrocele on my right side (about the size of a jumbo egg) and a small hydrocele on my left side. even with the pain I was having occasionally she told me that we should wait and see if the swelling reduces on its own because that is typically what occurs, that my body would absorb the fluid entering the testicular sac from my abdomen. I was puzzled by this response because it had been growing for over 20 years already, if my body could absorb this fluid it would have done so by now and I expressed this to her, her response was the same and sent me away until my next follow up in 2 months. when I went in for the follow up my testicle had not improved, in fact it had worsened. also I had a severe pain in my left side which she diagnosed now as an infection in the cord and put me on antibiotics. I told her that things were getting worse and I had researched the surgery online and I wanted to talk to a surgeon about fixing this once and for all. I was scheduled immediately for surgery and another ultrasound which showed a bilateral hydrocele. a week before my surgery I went to my doctors office and asked if I could get both sides repaired at the same time so I wouldn't have to have another later and was told this time that it was not a hydrocele on my left side, that it was an infection causing the swelling and it would be addressed after the surgery. the day of my surgery my doctor was 1.5 hours late, I asked again about doing both at the same time to save me another surgery in the future and he got annoyed and snapped at me that the left side was not a hydrocele and he would address it later. I felt very disrespected and my concerns were being dismissed. well, the next day after my surgery I was in great pain, tremendous swelling that encompassed my entire genital area including my penis and foreskin, I called his office and he was not available and was instructed to go to the ER. When I got there they ordered an ultrasound and confirmed I had a bilateral hydrocele with no signs of any infection. This really p****d me off and I still cant get any other answer but this is normal. I am 6 weeks post-op and it is still growing. I dumped this idiot and have an appointment with another urologist next week, I hope he doesn't play with me as well and that I can get some help here, my testicle now is the size of a small orange and very tender and feels like I am carrying around a bowling ball between my legs, this should not be normal. From all the horror stories I have read here it seems a commonality that all urologists are the same and have no clue what they are doing. I feel that as a patient I should have been fully informed of the after effects and anything else I should expect so I could go into this with all the knowledge I could get.

I have been severely depressed since all this began so I feel your pain. The docs seem to tell everyone this is an easy surgery with favorable results but in my experience and from reading others it's not as simple as they seem to explain it. It's been over a year since I had my 3rd operation and it's still the size of an egg my new urologist was dumbfounded as to why my old doc would have done a 3rd procedure. I think the results are a crapshoot and vary from man to man I wish I had read up more and gotten a second opinion before I let this doc do not 1 but 3 of these procedures on me.

I was appalled that Jack was sent home with zero information that was honest about what to expect. He had a safety pin hanging from a suture... no explanation. It was so unusual his GP and the ER doc could only guess as to it's purpose. It wasn't until a "supervisor for the provider network" went to the surgeon for an answer on behalf of Jack. This has been the attitude of this surgeon all along. Jack is just the patient, he doesn't deal with patients. Everyone says he's renowned so they don't question him.

I wish I had been told of the complications related to this surgery, I never would have agreed to be butchered like this, maybe that's what is causing my depression. Being uninformed seems to be a common factor with all of us, this cant be common practice for all urologists.

Well, I've found a new Urologist and I am scheduled now for corrective surgery on my right testicle. My new doctor has told me after a new ultrasound and examination that he has never seen such swelling and complications and that my situation was the first he has ever seen. I am now talking to a medical malpractice lawyer.

What did your new urologist say? I'm curious as to what he plans on doing to correct what the other urologist did. I ask because my testicle is still the size of a small egg after 3 hyrdocelectomys in a 3 year span. My new urologist said he would never had done 3 surgeries as every time you do a surgery scar tissue forms. He said there is nothing that can be done at this point though so I was wondering if you still had fluid that could be drained or something of that nature.

Well, first I need to update everyone. My last surgery was performed by my new doctor and the results were fantastic. after my first operation by a quack doctor my testicle was larger immediately after the procedure and only grew after that, it went from the size of a extra large egg to the size of a navel orange and very painful and debilitating. My new doctor could not figure out what the quack did to me, even after he reviewed my records and during the operation. this operation took 6 hours for him to repair the damage and fix me, after 3 weeks now post op I am happy to say that I am recovering very well and my testicle is back to its normal size, no fluid and no drain. the incision took a little longer to heal but it is doing fine, I am still occasionally uncomfortable but I think that would be normal after having your testicle pulled out of you body for a second time...lol. It feels like I was kicked in the balls by an angry mule. this time I had the doctor take photos during the operation so I would know what he did, I don't know if that had any influence on the outcome or his performance but I am healed and have peace of mind now.
Pat, I hope this helps you and possibly gives you some information and hope.

But what i know so far is the scrotum will never get back to its original size as it was before it becomes affected by hydrocele, one thing for sure is survery is never been a good thing, yes it helps you because you vet rid of whatever was troubling your health then you remain incomplete for the rest of your life, time to time you will feel some discomfort, some minor pains especially when applying pressure. Scrotum will reduce but it will really take long, it will take time, the good news is you don't have hydrocele anymore but the size of scrotum will change. Scrotum is the softess skin in male body so it can easly increase in size if something abnormal develops inside it and stays in there for long, hydrocelectomy is a shock to you testis, youtube the video of hydrocele surgery and will understand why your testis remains a bit bigger, it can also be due to scar tissues. Jst live your life and forget about that discomfort, it will not go away now, otherwise it will frustrate you everyday of your life.

Don’t sweat it... that was exactly what I was stressing about (at the same time in the post-op as you) that brought me to this forum. The chances are good, it is just all the blood that congealed (like a scab) and it will be dissolved/broken down over time... not all that long of a time from what I remember, but stressful nonetheless, every day, hour and minute it is there.
As I consider getting my other side done - as it starts to grow 2 years after the other, 1) I’m kicking myself for not having both done at the same time, & 2) know I will be cinching up the little “nut cup” and finding the tightest briefs imaginable (3 sizes small, doubled up???) immediately after & the first week post-op to save myself the stress of that large, hard mass from the blood.
Good luck, stress less! :D
