Taking Levothyroxine at night improved my life.

I was put on 50mcg of the stuff at xmas 2013, then after 3months put on 100mcgs. First of all I felt all over the place, disorientated like I had vertigo, then I changed to taking the pill last thing at night and the difference is remarkable, I wake up earlier, feel more refreshed and active, the feeling of disorientation has gone and my recent blood test was excellent and the doseage was working. Has anyone else had similar symptoms and found changing to a nightly dose has really helped them.

I have been taking my l levothyroxine at different times of day.  Is this o.k.?

A friend told me I should take it in the morning 30 mins. before eating or 30 mins. after eating.

Levothyroxine? I read that it should be swallowed two hours before eating, which is a pain. I tried taking it at night but could not sleep. I have been on Levothyroxine for 40 plus years and STILL  do not know the correct time to take it. Hope others will add their experience to this blog.

Hi it should be taken at the same time every day to allow it to fully work. And you friend has given you incorrect info. Taking this medication near food interferes with its working / being fully absorbed by your body. If you take it in the morning, take 1 hour before food. This allows it to pass through without interference from food. If you take at night time, it must be taken at least 3-4 hours after your last meal to endure all food has passed through

The correct time is whatever is suited to you. One hour before food in the morning is fine.

I stopped taking in the morning as it gave me a foggy head. I do much better taking at night time

Told doctor today of Levothyroxine problem. She is rechecking my tsk thyroid levels with the thought that my dosage might need changing. Will get lab results later this week.

Thanks to everyone who pitched in on my problem.

      Keep helping each other.

The large paper of directions and legal chatter of tiny print which comes with each prescription of Levothyroxine, states to take it in the morning but do not eat anything for an hour. I have been having my coffee and a square of dark chocolate (90%) around twenty minutes to an hour after the Levo because I awake starving and needing caffeine in the worse way! I cannot wait an hour before eating. I tried taking it at night four hours after dinner. That might be why I could not sleep.

You are lucky, my leaflet doesn't say anything like that. I had to research it. I've read a lot of people having it out on bedside table to have as soon as they wake. And then they say by the time they have finished getting up and getting dress, 30-60 minutes have passed then they have breakfast. Research says to not take near caffeine but people say it makes no difference

My lab report came in yesterday with normal tsh numbers so I conclude taking Levothyroxine with my morning coffee and square of dark chocolate makes NO difference at all.

      Case closed for me.

Received my refill of Levothyroxine today and pamphlet  said "do not take calcium within 4 hours of Levothyroxine". This news to me because I recently had a high calcium hyperparathyroidism surgery which requires calcium supplement three times each day. Must watch carefully but is just an additional onus of taking Levothyroxine and its "rules".

Do you include drinks, or is it just food that you have 4 hours before? I like a cup of tea at night, and I'm taking my tablet later and later. Thanks

Hi everyone. 40 year old man here. Been on thyroxine (225 a day) about 7 years after RAI treatment. I've always suffered with the brain fog, numbness, tiredness and achy flu like symptoms. They come and go some days worse than others. I have always taken tablets first thing in the morning, felt pretty bad today hence me searching for answers and finding this thread. I'm going to start taking tablets before bed tonight give it a go for a few weeks I will come back and let you guys know how I get on. Also reading about what you guys are going through sounds like I could have written it myself ha. Good luck to you all.

Hi mary-Beth, been taking thyroxine last thing at night for almost a month now and yes, my sleep has been disrupted terribly. Not that it was great before. I have also been having really bad headaches in the mornings since starting the night routine. It hasn't worked for me today I'm going back to morning routine. Paul

Hi Mary I used to take mine in the morning, for about a year I would walk my dogs then have my breakfast. I started to feel unwell so I decided to take it on a night I was fine for a long while but then I used to wake up all the time, so about a month ago I went back to mornings so far so good. Lets hope it stays that way.
