Taking Levothyroxine at night improved my life.

I was put on 50mcg of the stuff at xmas 2013, then after 3months put on 100mcgs. First of all I felt all over the place, disorientated like I had vertigo, then I changed to taking the pill last thing at night and the difference is remarkable, I wake up earlier, feel more refreshed and active, the feeling of disorientation has gone and my recent blood test was excellent and the doseage was working. Has anyone else had similar symptoms and found changing to a nightly dose has really helped them.

    Hello Everyone,

I was so pleased to read this, I have been on levo for 18 years.

About 4 years ago I have been suffering extreme dizziness, brain fog, blurred vision which has completely changed my life

I have noticed that if I take my medicine at night I feel better. Today I took it in the morning and I am so dizzy I feel awful.

    Hope it works.

    Hi Doreen,

I was very interested to read what you wrote. I have been on thyroid mess for 30 years. I have just had it increased to 100mcg and I have been dizzy and had fog brain and depression. I will try start taking it at night and report back.

I noticed others taking sleep aides benedryl which I take too. I didn't see any response to taking this.

Last wk. dr. increased levothyroxine from 150mcg. to 200mcg. because I was out of range and result of my TSH: 3.830. (range: .03580-3.74). Thank you. jade 13021

      Hi Jade,

I am a newbie to levothyroxine. I'm on a starter dose of 50mcg Eltroxin for 5 weeks now. I follow the instructions and take mine an hour before breakfast which is a nuisance. I haven't had any releif from my symptoms yet so I'm very interested in what others do.

Hello alan308 I am not a newby, have been on sort of thyroxine since 1992. I have read comments here in this thread and I am trying the in the early evening to take levo. to prevent the side effects. Did it last night for first time and I don't sleep as well as I would like so I could not tell much difference first night regard sleep issues. In this thread there are some on 50mcg and I never was on that lower of an amt.

What are your symptoms if you don't mind me knowing?  I don't know where you are in your knowledge about your thyroid? and testing? Tell me what you know about these two subjects, please, and I may be able to share my experiences with you, and they might help.  Have a good day. Jade.

I have gained a lot of weight and cannot lose weight. Aches and pains. Fatigue, fatigue and more fatigue. I suffer from coldness and can't get warm at times.

50mcg seems to be only a starter dose and from what I've read this should be increased by 25mcg every 4 weeks until your tsh levels reach 0 or below.

What side effects do you get from eltroxin

Hi Alan, yes I gained weight as well, and yes the aches and pains, hmm-hmm, me too. Fatigue for me as well Alan is almost the worst symptom with low-T. By the way, I'm on levothyroxine.  Are you on eltroxin for I have never heard of this thyroxine medication?  I cannot say re: 50mcg being starter dose and increases, etc.  This doc I see is wanting to get me to 1, I'd never heard of 0. I did not the feeling of cold that I've been experiencing was thyroxine-related Alan.  I do have a just now dx'd and tx'd U.T.I.  Is cold also part of symptomology of low T? Thanks for heads up. Oh,  I went from 304 pds. down now to 175 pds (due to colon issue (not bypass, no). How much do you weigh?  Do you know what your TSH is at the moment? Good to hear from you again! Jade

The coldness only affects some hypos. It's because the adrenal gland is affected as well. Yes eltroxin is the medication I'm on.my tsh is 7 and I weight 231lb

Hi Alan. I've been through a lot with thyroid issue so I want to help you now. I hope you will understand that it is early in the a.m. and I was just on checking for an address to a company, and saw the Patient email message so here goes. I hope you take this very seriously for it is.

Google says the healthy thyroid range is between: .5 and 4.5 however, I see an older Army primary care dr. and his range is between: 0.3578 and 3.74. That said my dr. is bringing my TSH down to 1 for most (not all) physicans like this number because they want your heart rate and brain firing rate and you metabolism to not be sluggish - which if this TSH number is up in the 3, 4, 5, etc. area, to put it bluntlyand this is important, okay? this can cause weight gain, chills, depression, skin changes, lethargy, etc. and all the other low thyroid symptoms can become exacerbated to some degree when your TSH is left at 7!  Your TSH level being 7 is in my very humble opinion (and this has been my now since '92 when I was dx'd with Hashimotos' Thyroiditis) why you are experiencing chills, weight gain, and uncontrollable food cravings as well.

Would like to hear your thoughts and feedback on what I just shared with you Alan. Take care. Jade

    Hello,

Please if anyone could advise from those who tried taking the Levo at night and worked well for them. My husband is on 100 mg and he has trouble losing the weight he gained and now is considering changing from morning to night intake. However, due to work circumstances there is no regular specific time he goes to bed at. So in such case the only way is to stick to a certain hour at night that is regardless of when he goes to sleep, yes? Is that okay? If yes, what is the best hour to take the med knowing he wakes up some time between 7:30-9:00 in the morning?

And please what about dinner time? How long to abstain in case before or wait in case dinner is after the pill.

      Tamara,

For 25 yrs. I was prescribed and ingested levothyroxine until from 10/1992 through 9/2/2017 and I have nothing good to say about this drug.  It robbed me of 25 years of healthier living because my TSH seemed to be in range on this awful drug, yet my low hypothyroid symptoms told a totally opposite conclusion and these numerous exhausting and sickly low-T symptoms would never abate for the entire 25 yrs. I was compliant on levothyroxine. And I remained very sickly and on the perimeter of life for 25 years with debilitating horrible levothyroxine side effects aka low-T symptoms. So think long and hard on whether or not you wish for your husband to remain on levothyroxine drug, for again there are many like me whose bodies just can NOT and will NOT tolerate this drug's toxic side effects.  Some people have no ill-effects on levothyroxine, however, I did and am forewarning others about my horrible experience on levothyroxine.  It seems like there may be a sort of campaign by docs to place patients on Synthroid (brand) of levothyroxine...why, I have no earthly clue as to why the docs do not put their patients on natural desiccated thyroid (n.d.t.) hormone replacement.  For me, this would just make sense that our bodies are more able to break down the natural desiccated thyroid hormone rather than a lab-made synthetic construct of the thryoid hormone gland. What do you think? Hmmm.  Doesn't make sense to me, or ($) does it?

Not until I went vegan a little over a month ago did I then discover that the levothyroxine (some patients report fine on it, others...not so much) had been making me so sick and I had numerous low-T symptoms even on this drug.  Which that is why I was taking this drug in the first place - to alleviate my low-T symptoms.

I am sorry that I have nothing good  to say about levothyroxine.  I am now on the n.d.t. nature-throid (1 grain) and although doc prescribe 2 grain, I now am much more savvy and will only take what my body and mind now tell me that is good for me, and I will no longer give full control/power to any and all docs "within range" blood level results.  For I do not believe in cookie cutter, one-size-fits-all and if your husband does better on levothyroxine in the a.m. so be it, if he tries bedtime and feels better then by all means your husband could then take the levothyroxine at night.  Again, one-size-does-not-fit-all.

I do not believe in the TSH range as the end all - do all of thyroid blood lab results conclusive evidence that my blood levels are "within range", and I also no longer will be sold snake oil (levothyroxine - synthetic) "truths" after I've discovered on the world wide web that I was not alone in suffering on this drug.  For there are many former levothyroxine users that could not tolerate this drug either (like me) Tamara, due to the myriad of low-T symptoms that we had so horrifically experienced on this drug.  I am learning finally now, that just because a doc says it's okay does not necessarily mean that a drug is suitable for me.  I must always first and foremost listen to what my mind and body are telling me, always and forever, and it seems like your husband's body is telling him (regarding weight gain) that something is not quite right.  Has your husband tried the natural desiccated pig or cow thyroid hormone drugs that are natural and not as harsh on body's system?  I wish you and your husband better overall health, Tamara.

I tried the alternative pig thyroid in the 90s I was in a constant state of HYPER, all my bloodwork was off the charts. My Dr couldn't understand why I wasn't in a coma, my tsh was 77.5. He asked me if I drank a lot as my liver showed sclerosis??? Say what?? Put back on the synthetic levo and everything went to normal.. right now we are rearranging doses.. I just started taking d3 and b12 liquid under my tongue.. I feel better. I'm 65 I'm not saying alternative therapy doesn't work, it just didn't with me. Do you know what those animals go thru to give you their thyroid? Have you checked??

Hello tamara75830, I recently had my dosage change but on my prescription directions its says " to take one tablet by mouth daily on an empty stomach for hours before or after eating high calcium food" and this is a different manufacturer I've been taking the pill for over 15 years mine just got race to 175mcg and was not recommended by my doctor to take it at night. So hopefully this will help you and your husband.
