Taking Levothyroxine at night improved my life.

I was put on 50mcg of the stuff at xmas 2013, then after 3months put on 100mcgs. First of all I felt all over the place, disorientated like I had vertigo, then I changed to taking the pill last thing at night and the difference is remarkable, I wake up earlier, feel more refreshed and active, the feeling of disorientation has gone and my recent blood test was excellent and the doseage was working. Has anyone else had similar symptoms and found changing to a nightly dose has really helped them.

Just like to add to this thread as it has helped my wife considerably. Previously, she took Levothyroxine and Liothyonine sodium in the morning for many years. Two years ago she developed classic symptoms of foggy headedness and lethary as many here have described. She tried taking her medication an hour before going to bed and the next day she felt remarkably better, with both the foggy headedness and exhaustion reduced. She is probably 80 % back to where she was before all this started, so not a perfect solution, but taking these drugs at night brought a remarkable management to her symptoms. Thanks to original poster as she has regained a big chunk of her life. Weight gain sadly has not (yet) been reversed.

I'm in the U.S. My now previous ob/gyn who believes in all natural medication didn't want to prescribe synthroid to help with my thyroid issues. She prescribed Naturethroid, but it really didn't help with fatigue. I had other symptoms, such as weight gain, sensitivity to cold, constipation, etc. I went to my primary care doctor to get a new prescription to help with the fatigue, but after running tests, she found my levels were fine so she wouldn't prescribe anything. I kept telling both doctors that me being lethargic all day, and especially early morning, wasn't good for a mother of five children. So a year goes by and I hadn't been taking any medication, but the fatigue was too much to bear, so I had my new ob/gyn run tests and they discovered I have hypothyroidism based on the levels. I take the tests results to the primary care physician so she FINALLY prescribes the new synthetic medication, levothyroxine. I'm concerned that if my levels improve that the fatigue will return and I'll be back in the same position of having doctors deny that I need any further treatment. Besides possibly taking the medication at night to have more energy during the day, is there anything else I should take with the thyroid medication... like One a Day vitamins, Iron, or B12 for energy?

    Hi Doreenn

thats encouraging. I started on 25mg and been on it for about 2 months. It has improved things a bit for me. I am more motivated but only for about half the day and get very tired and lose motivation to get things done.

my gp said my levels were borderline but im hopeing he increases the level as i feel it hasnt made enough of a change.

i have put on a few e tra pounds also and am worried about getting into a rut were i cant get out of.

what i was interested in your mailing is about switching to nightime. I wasnt given any clear instructions on how to take it and have read so many cinflicting issues.

At the momemt i am trying to take it around 7am and im having it with a cup of tea, is this counterproductive?

if i take it at night then if I have been working late like last night and have my meal around 9pm then that means that i have to wait until midnight to take my tablet.

its really tricky knowing when is the best time to take it, maybe set an alarm at 3am ? Trouble is im a field service engineer and my working day pattern is different each day so uts hard to fund a routine.

    thanks for sharing.

So would you have to wait a half an hour before your meal? I have dinner at 6p but go to bed around 8p or 9p because I get up at 4am... I take my other meds around 430p when I get home from work... any suggestions?

Hi Doreen, I have recently been put on 50 mcg of levothyroxine after having radio active iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism  but am now hypo and feel wobbly almost unbalanced at times and extremely tired all the time I was advised to take the tablet in the morning but after reading some of the posts am going to try the evening dose instead. Hopefully will feel better. Has anyone had the puffy eyes which I am really suffering with at mo ... I fact I don't just have bags I have suitcases .... And do they go as the thyroxine kicks in.

    many thanks

Hi Debra, I too was taking levothyroxine in the morning and felt so poorly, brain fog, bloated eyes and  exhausted even after 8 hrs sleep. I've only been on the tablets for 5 weeks and for the last 7 days been taking them at night, what a difference, still slight tiredness thru the day but better. So it does work just hope the suitcases under my eyes will diminish as quickly

Hi Doreen, I think I will give the night time treatment a go, I really just want to feel better! I'd like to share this info on a trial I read about, it has more in depth explanations and may help anyone considering changing their routine.
