Taking Levothyroxine at night improved my life.

I was put on 50mcg of the stuff at xmas 2013, then after 3months put on 100mcgs. First of all I felt all over the place, disorientated like I had vertigo, then I changed to taking the pill last thing at night and the difference is remarkable, I wake up earlier, feel more refreshed and active, the feeling of disorientation has gone and my recent blood test was excellent and the doseage was working. Has anyone else had similar symptoms and found changing to a nightly dose has really helped them.

I am new to this site, so hello everyone! I have been trying to find help and information about my thyroid because it is all new to me. Let me start by saying i am 28 years old before i begin saying whats wrong. I went in for a physical about seven months ago and the nurse practioner I see found through examination that my thyroid was swollen. She sent me to have blood work and ultra sound of my thyroid done. The results came back and showed that I had four small nodules, and goiter as well but all my t3 and t4 test results came back as being normal. She went ahead and put me on a dosage of 25 MG of Levithyroxine and we waited a month to have my blood tested again. Blood level came back almost exactly the same but another nodule was found. My nurse practioner sent my to an endocrinologist and he done the same things that she did only he done an ultra sound himself and found another nodule. Theyre not big wnough to test to see if they could be xancerous. I am scared and worried as to what is going on with my body. I am gaining weight every month and I am too tired/sluggish to do anything about it and the nurse practioner I see won't up my dosage of levithyroxine because my t3 and t4 levels are normal. What do you all think I should do? Thanks so much!

How long from last meal do you take the synthroid every night. Have you ever taken it after taking a glass of wine or alcohol?

if you take it at night, how late can you eat?  Do I have to space it 4 hours after dinner?  What if I have pills I have to take at 9 PM?

from a thyroid company website:   Synthroid® should always be taken on an empty stomach. An empty stomach means that it has been at least 2 - 3 hours since eating or drinking (other than water). After you take your Synthroid®, you should wait at least one hour before you eat or drink anything other than water.

That's interesting Doreen, I've been taking thyroxine in the morning for about 20 years and it's been 20 years of living fog. I've just read a report on a recent "double blind" study done and it suggested taking thyroxine at night might improve thngs.

I asked my doctor and he said it's certainly worth trying, so I'm going to start taking my thyroxine at night from tomorrow--I'll let you know how I go in a couple of months. Thanks for posting this smile

New to this group.  I am anxious to try synthroid in the evening... starting tonite.  Actually went to computer to see why i needed to take a pill in the morning... because more often than not, similar to others, i take with my other meds or not at all 'cause i forget.  I am so excited..  I wasn't even thinking about the possible affects it will bring to me.  If I can wake up non-fogged and ready to go... that would be a miracle... to me icing on the cake!!!!!!!

I have been taking synthroid for about 30-35 years and was consistent with .125 forever. Fortunately, i had never had a reaction to this.  But the endocrinologist started with very small doses and small increments. Upon entering menopause, early 50s... my thyroid went wacko.  within a year i was up to .225.  Twenty years later i have stablized at .175... taking synthroid.  Because of medicare I was taking levo for a number of years and it kept going up and down.  Going back to synthroid a year or two ago... i am now even-steven!!!

I was told by an close relative, pharmacutical distributor,  to keep on synthroid [as it is consistent] the generics are very similar and possibly the same... but you don't know which one you get from the pharmacy.

Also, as soon as i started menopause I knew I would be going to an Endocrinologist as they take care of the whole body... not just your women parts, etc.  The thyroid plays a big part with the petuitary and wouldn't venture forth any other way.

When i started meno I was a little depressed, as well,  lots of things were going on... But i didn't want medication.  After discussion with the doctor... saying "if you had diabetes... blah... blah... blah...so I started with a small dose.  As the years have passed... this depression has become full fledged, unfortunately.  If I forget to take my depression meds one day... the next day i feel a heavy cloud.  I am not living with stress and would love to give these up.... and trying to... is not a course of action I can take... if i don't take them, i can't function.  I say this because apparently this is very common as women start menopause.  As a matter of fact, initially, i was concerned about having this on record with my health plan.  The doctor wrote a note stating "depression due to menopause" and the plan accepted this without any increase.

      Good luck out there.

I take thyroxine too but only 50mg have been on this dose for years even though I get blood tested every 3 months not specifically for thyroid although it is checked also but it's for lithium check. I've always taken my thyroid med first thing in morning as it must be on an empty stomach then 30mins before eating so morning always suited me best.

Hello everyone, I have been taking thyroxine for  over 30 years, I had a partial thyroidectomy, which regrew and then had the rest removed by radioactive iodine, about 20 years ago. I have been taking 100 since then, I have always felt that my skin has been very dry since. I have always taken my thyroxine in the morning but I have never felt entirely well after reading this forum I will change to morning. Does anyone know if there are any foods which you should avoid, I did read somewhere that you should not drink too much milk as this causes a build up of calcium? I feel really stupid that I have been taking a drug for so long and not questioned it! Thanks for your helpful advice.

I'm gonna try taking it at night because they can't get the dose right! It's 200mcg- I put on weight. Then 250mcg and after a year I'm back to my normal weight. I'm wondering if the fact that I've not long taken the medication that the reading is sometimes slightly high. What do you think?

Thank you so much for your post. I happened to stumble across it and thought I would give it a try. From the first night I noticed the change, no more feelings of vertigo and I don't know if this has anything to do with it but for the first time in four years I've begun to lose weight. Thank you.

I read this for over an hour yesterday and I loved all the advise. I forgot my pill for the first time yesterday AM in the year that I have been on it. I saw someone asking that they take Tylenol PM to sleep so can they still change to taking the thyroid med at night, I didnt see an answer, so I tried it. I take a 1/2 of a generic tylenol pm every night and 75mcg well I went ahead and tried this last night. OMG never ever again, I halucinated and dreamt like vertual dreams all night, I was exhausted when I woke up. I had to fight to wake up. It was one of the deepest sleeps ever and it was awful. Every horrible fear I have ever had (like fire, being robbed, etc) happened in my dreams last night and I couldnt wake no matter how I faught in my head. I think the combo of the two meds and my system did not agree. I am curious if anyone else has tried tylenol pm & levo and had anything like this. Please advise. Blessing to all

    Hi there,

I just got on thyroid meds last week.

Question....how long does it take for it to notice any change for the better?

I am also going to take your advice, and start taking it at night.

    Thanks for the tip!

    Maggie
