Thigh muscle cramp

I have often had calf muscle cramp, but this is easily dealt with by walking about. However, last night I had a thigh muscle cramp which was far more acute than anything I had had before. The pain was excruciating and lasted ten minutes. My face went grey and I almost fainted. I couldn't walk and massaging seemed to have little effect.

I am having these kinds of upper thigh cramps and they are excruciating and keep me up at night. Do you find that drinking tonic water helps? I'm trying it tonight. I was convinced after a horrible night last night that I had a blood clot or something. I confer that it is very scary!

Hi. Ive been there and tried everything. ..but talk to a General Practitioner..or your local Dr. Sometimes they have life experience others dont have. I'm on so many drugs for diabetes n depression n heart disease that when you combine them the side effects are numerous.
I forgot Oxycondond...good Ol Hillbilly Heroin legal but taken onl6 for extreme pain...the cramps that we have experienced qualifies it to be call T- Rex bite and grip. If you feel tonic water will help...consider what my Dr said...you'll have to drink 200 gallons of tonic to get and quantity of quinine in your system. I like Gin with my tonic. ..but not 200 gallons of it. I suggest you look at Vitamin D...lack of vitamin D can cause cramping. Perhaps have a blood test and look for what your low on. Yes there's $$'s involved.
I found that if i sit too long say in ia boat...slouching in front of the TV or driving a truck thats not an auto. ..then I can get the T Rex grab as i go to stand up. I suffer a degree of paralysis with it too...so the nerves in the spine are impacted. I can agree with one person saying that their physio said it was a shortening of a particular muscle. ..damn right its shortened. ..so shortened that trying to stretch it out will cause more pain after the cramping eases. The nerves are grtting mixed signals. ..you can see it happening under the skin as various area are stimulated buy the central nervous system say What The heck is happening here. So go anf have a talk with the Doc for a checkup...ask for bloods and look for Vit D and E and ehat your ferritin lrvels are...these are the iron levels. Mine were in the 3000 units...indicating a big inflammation in the body...also a sign of Haemochromatosis....lethargy cramping etc....one way out possibility is that if your taking anti cholesterol drugs called Statins....if you like Grapefruit. ..under no circumstances should you eat them....i never knew the connection. ..I was always tire ...chronically tired. Id sleep in the disability toilet at work when the boss went out. ..friends would wake me when he returns. Sleeping on toilet rolls is not comfortable. I ate 3 grapefruit over 3 days. I felt like I had aged 40 years and was a 99 year old infirm man. I could get out of my Mitsubishi car/wagon.
I offered the grapefruit to my Dr. ..we're friends that go target shooting. ..i hope your not eating them. ..they'll react badly with your statin drugs.
I hope ive covered some valuable & usable points .
I know its going to be hard to do this...when you feel it strike. ..dont jump out of bed to walk it off. Dont do anything except slowly go with the cramp but stay very still. The longer you stay still the better. As its easing or stabilising. ...punch the fleshey muscles to reactivate the muscles in the shortened position. Seems to work for me. It may pass in 10 to 15 mins. Try and avoid sexual positions where your legs are twisted or in squatted where your actually shortening the muscles . I wont go into specifics in this forum.
Bon Chance.

I've been battling for about 5 years. I've discussed with multiple types of doctors and PT. No one knows why this is happening but it effects my life drastically. I can no longer sleep in the fetal position. Something with the pressure of my knees together. I've had multiple blood tests over the years and nothing has ever been out of whack. I have also had gastric bypass in 2005 so my levels are checked regularly due to absorption issues related to me surgery. I take all the vitamins you discussed, multiple times throughout the day. I take potassium and magnesium every night before i go to bed. The quinine in the tonic water does help. I to have to told about the about but it does help me. I have also found otc mefication called Leg Cramps that you dissolve under your tongue. I cannot stand and the pain brings me to tears and i do some serious praying too. Mine last 10 to 15 min and is just as bad pain as child birth. The muscles in my ankle physically draw my skin in toward the muscle, it looks deformed. Touching it is worse for me. I have to wait it out. My husband is always right by my side to offer support or get me anything i may need. I've even tried an Amish remedy that almost made me throw up....it contains apple cider vinegar.
I'm glad I'm not alone but hate that so many people suffer from this and no doctor can give us a diagnosis. I've been considering going to the Cleveland Clinic?
I agree sitting too long or being to active I have more problems. I seems to be some sort of circulation issue but I've even been to Vein Clinics of America and their treatment didn't help either. I'm beginning to wonder if this could have something to do with a problem with my lower back. It seems worse when in bed. I also have trouble driving sometimes, even short distances bc of the angle you have to hold your foot to push on the excelaerator. I can feel it up the front of my leg like it's getting ready to catch.
I hope one day we can all find what is causing this and we can get some relief.

I was gonna call 9-1-1 the first time but it finally went away. Doctors can't figure it out they say magnesium maybe low. Omg where did this evil thing come from. I just had a episode tonight now I'm up with insomnia . glad I can talk about it now guess we're a little family

Just had another episode tonight but this time my son was around thank God!
I keep tonic water and a heating pad near. It helped a lot. Glad he was around cause you can't even move to get anything yourself and I have stairs.
Well let me try to go back to sleep

Hi, I've had night leg cramps for years which I could walk out and about a year ago started with the ones on the inside of the thigh when I was prescribed an antibiotic for an infection. The cramps/spasms are excruciating and will last just as long as they want to. You can't walk them out like regular cramps. My way of dealing with it is to bargain, cry and pray and that doesn't work so instead I don't move, don't stretch out the leg or stand, breathe in through the nose out through the mouth and concentrate on that. Touching the muscle doesn't work, it can make it worse. it is like electrical charges when it starts to lessen I can feel it twitching, clenching and releasing. Finally after 5-15 minutes it just goes away. OMG. Statins are bad for cramps in many people. I am on steriods for inflammatory arthritis and the steroids brought it on again for me. I made sure to keep hydrated which might help keep it less severe, I take Magnesium and Vita D3 and Turmeric. I'm sure they help too. I think I'll try the tonic water even thought I'm allergic to quinine. The quinine in tonic must be miniscule. I don't understand why, with so many people with this problem that SOME DOCTOR doesn't have an answer. Its astonishing!

I too have these severe cramps in my inner thighs to my knees. Tonight when one started suddenly the other leg folloewed close behind. I couldn't stand , broke out in a sweat and while trying I did pass out. The pain was still strong when I came to. I can't seem to find a stretch that gets the right area so I don't know if stretching helps. This normally happens on nights after a lot of physical activity or climbing, but does happen some days for no apparent reason. I'm 53 and have been having these for several years. Sex can be ruined fast on a lot of occasions as well as anything else. From all the research I've been doing it says you need potassium, calcium, magnesium and B complex. I take Super B complex daily and calcium but not the others. I haven't tried them but there's some sworn by home remedies I've read about. A spoonful of yellow mustard, which I tried tonight. I'm not sure if it helped or if the cramps had just ended by the time I was able to get to the frig! The also say a bar of soap under your bed sheets stops night craps while sleeping. I'll be trying that shortly. I'm willing to try anything at this point! Hope some of this helps yours!

I've had the same experience. I don't know what causes them but suspect in my case not being sufficiently hydrated contributes to it. But once it cramps the key is to loosen and relax the muscle ASAP. And as you know every second feels like an eternity. I've tried many of the suggestions on this forum and others but what works fastest and most consistently for me has been putting a heating pad on the area as quickly as possible. Get a good one that gets hot quickly not just slightly warm. I keep one in my bedside night table draw so I don't have to stand to get it as walking is difficult when the muscle is severely contracted. Get it as hot as you can stand it and place it on the biggest part of the cramped muscle. Breath deeply. The pain of these cramps have made me nauseous and faint. While I'm not sure why, I suspect I must stop breathing properly because of the intensity of the pain. The heat helps tremendously. Based on my description of the area affected by cramping which in my case is my quadracep, inner thigh and knee area, my trainer said it is a muscle, ( whose name I cant recall) that runs from the outer hip area across the front part of the thigh to the inner thigh. Because this muscle is so long when it contracts it feels as if the pain is moving across the leg.
i hope this helps you and others. The heating pad has helped me physically and psychologically, because before using it I just stretched and had to wait for the pain to run its course. Anytime I got a twinge of pain in my thigh I would panic. But knowing I now have something that works keeps me calmer. Good luck! I feel your pain , literally.🙂

I'm now 84 and have exercised intensively for over 40 years, mostly using an exercise bike. Some years ago I started experiencing severe thigh cramps while sitting down, legs extended, after a 45-minute bike session. I also was aware of an irregular heartbeat starting near the end of each session (no other symptoms). One day I read that a lack of magnesium (common with the elderly) could irritate muscles of the heart. Since both the cramps and the heart irregularity were signs of nerve irritation, I started taking 500 mg of magnesium citrate (OTC) daily. The thigh cramps and the irregular heartbeat both vanished immediately and have not reoccurred.
