Think I have Blepharitis..

Started having many of the symptoms you all have experienced with Blepharitis ... thought it was just a fluke at first.. maybe was having an allergic reaction to my makeup, peeling eyelids, crusty at the corners of my eyes in the morning, as it got worse it was swelling and very red eyelids.. then I began to really worry because my son came home complaining that his eye was red and hurting. I thought maybe we were getting pink eye so off to the doctor we went. She prescribed him with antibiotic eye drops and me with ointment, she said she didn't think mine was pink eye, but she wasn't sure what it was.... I have been using the ointment and things were not getting any better.. I decided to look online and see if there was anything out here about the symptoms I was experiencing. Little did I know that there are so many that have this eye mess!! I am so glad I found this forum.. I have been doing the heat compress in the morning and evening before bed and using the antibiotic ointment, also bought some "eye wipes" at the drug store to use by recommendation of a friend who has this same condition. Today I found the Wet Ones with the Benz. Chlor. and I have cut them in strips to use for the 3 times a day... Just used my first ones tonight.. praying for a good outcome... so far doesn't feel too bad other than a little drying around my eye area... I am in the process of waiting the 10 minutes and then will go and rinse my eyes with warm water and apply either the antibiotic ointment or maybe some vitamin E oil for moisturization.  I am praying this works... I LOVE wearing eye makeup and would feel completely depressed if I can't wear it anymore because of this mess!!  Thanks to everyone who has posted their great outcomes and treatments on this forum... hopefully I will be able to say it was a lifesaver for me soon!!!

    Valerie,

I have recently gone through the same thing.  My Dr had treated me for pink-eye for almost 3 months and it only got worse, so she sent me to a cornea specialist and I was diagnosed with Blepharitis. I too love wearing eye make-up. more out of necessity if you know what I mean. It just doesn't work. The minute it is applied, it runs down the face and causes more swelling, itching and pain. I just ordered some of the disposable mascara wands ( cheaper online) and may try. My right eye has it slightly and on days, I have even worn it on that eye and not the other one and tried to cover up that side with hair. lol

I just want to mention that one of the things that helped my eyelids to clear up was to stop using a moisturizer on them.  I had gotten a special moisturizer for eyes, but my eyelids continued to be irritated.  It was after stopping that moisturizer and starting the hot compresses (I now use a microwaveable eye bag that I ordered online) that things began to clear up.  The antibiotic ointment wasn't helping, and I was then prescribed a steroid to use one week a month.  I only did that for 2 months.  Once I read about the Wet Ones, I skipped all the creams and ointments and just used those along with the warm eye bag and "expressing" the oil/gunk by firmly stroking my cleaned finger along the eyelid margins, upper and lower of each eye.  I had used a product called SteriLid for a time, but when that ran out used the baby shampoo for a while.  I now only occasionally use the baby shampoo.

Even though my eyes are cleared up, my eye doctor recommended continuing the warm compress 3 times a week to keep the oils flowing, so I am back to doing that after having mostly stopped for a while.  I used the Wet Ones for about 3 months twice daily originally, and still use them occasionally now.

I did also read a book called The Dry Eye Remedy that I got from the library - that helped me develop my eye routine, but I found out about the Wet Ones on this site.

      Hi Nancy,

Do you happen to remember the name of the site you ordered the eye bag from ?  That sounds like it would be much better especially when not home.

I got it from Amazon.  It was called Thermalon Dry Eye Compress.  I also saw it later in my local CVS.

My other reply is pending, so I'll try again.  I ordered from Amazon and got the Thermalon Dry Eye Compress.  I wrap a clean washcloth around it every time I use it, so I don't need to worry about cleaning it.

    Hi Valerie,

i had a similar experience. I had bacterial pink eye to start with, i picked it up off my partner who had it a week earlier. From that date my eyes have never been the same, I thought I was getting recurring pink eye from reinfecting myself. After 6 months and 4 Eye specialist I have finally got on to the right treatment thanks to a very genuine and experienced eye doctor. Most likely the infection did something to my glands or the like and it's most likely posterior bleph. Anyway, I used all the cleanser and wipes etc but my eyes were still watery, red, swollen and itchy. This new amazing doc has put me on a new antibiotic pill for bleph, called azithromycin. It is working amazing for me so far, eyes 90% better.  The good thing with this pill you only need to take it once a month as it has extended release, so it's pretty easy to stick with.

I also love makeup and it has caused me grief, but I have spoken gp he says wearing makeup doesn’t really make a difference and I would have to agree as I have used makeup throughout the whole 6 months.

Anyhow wish you all the best, let us know how you get on.

      Hi Ana,

Nice to know that the antibiotics are working for you.. this condition is so irritating... you don't realize until you have it how darn debilitating it actually is.. and how much you rely on your eyes to act NORMAL!!  Might be time for me to see my eye doctor!!  Glad to know the makeup thing is probably NOT my problem... although I guess it's time to throw out all my current makeup and invest in some new stuff because the old is probably all gunked up with whatever this mess is and I would just continue to exaserbate the situation!

Thanks for your help... I appreciate all the replies .. they help to keep me educated about this condition ... I will keep posting. I hope you all do as well cry (drippy eyes today) lol

      Valerie,

The first thi ng I do when I come home is take off the eye make-up ( usually now just a little shadow).  They feel so much better, but the moment I put anything on in the morning, it seems to cause the watering. When I was diagnosed with pink-eye 3 1/2 mos ago, I had just purchased all new Lancome eye make-up and had to discard all of it. I just thought it would be a 2 or 3 week ordeal, not this. I know there are so many things much much worse but it is strange that more people don't have it. I am hoping when I return to my cornea Dr, he might prescribe the azithromycin that Ana has been using.

      Hi

I had it for 3 years and was put on different drops, creams, steroid ointmnents etc...No good...eventually the wet ones helped.

I still cant wear make up.....dont wear a lot anyway, some cream and eye shadow but every time I give it a try they start watering again.

It is so debilitating isnt it? Especially for a female......my eyes looked dreadful...I ended up buy myself nice glasses with just plain glass in them to disguise itwink

      Eileen,

That sounds like me. A year ago, I was checked to see if I might me a candidate for iLasik. I was , but then chickened out. I have come close to poking my eyes with the mascara wand because I can't see. I wear over the counter reading glasses but now need glasses sometimes for distance so had really decided to go with the surgery soon and then this happened. I remember the Dr told me I would not be able to wear make-up for 2 wks after the iLasik . We had several weddings and graduations to go to so I deided to wait. Little did I know that all of this would be going on. I do find that when I wear  just a little eyeshadow, it is awful.  I am rubbing my eyes until they are sore.  I have also been doing the trick of wearing glasses all the time which I never had to, just to cover it up I am trying the wet ones.  I know it takes about 2 mos to hopefully work.

      Hi Kathy

The first time I bought glasses they wern't very dear......like I said it was a "cover up"biggrin and also it helped to protect them a bit.

I then had my yearly eye check and he said you need stronger reading glasses, then he said do you drive? Yes...well you aren't legal....you need distance glasses as welleek

A bit of a shock because I havent needed distance ones.....reading ones yes.

      So when I was chosing the frames I thought if I have to wear these they are going to be good ones {or as good as I could afford}

So 2 pairs of glasses later and for a week they were OK then the distance ones started to get blurred??? I went back and saw a receptionist who told me to clean them with wipes? OK another week and no better and this time it was someone else who say no not wipes you should use a spray.....OK.....Then i got fed up and booked aother appointment and said I wanted a re-test. {I'd been using the wet ones at this stage} I went in and the first thing he said before examining them was Ohyour eyes are so much better..not as inflammed.

He did the test...said I've got good news and bad newseek

The good news is you dont need distance glasses eek the bad news is I'm sorry you've already got them!!!

So the reading ones he was just going to put weaker lens in them....the distance ones he said I could make those into reading ones???

I thought....I love the frames so I said will you put plain glass in them? So still wearing those most of the time because I like the lens LOL Isnt that awful???  LOL I might as well make use of them since I bought them

      Sorry for the ramble

      Love

lol that sounds like me !  I am kinda relieved .  My left eye had been very very blurred. I kept saying I have a film over my eye.  She said, oh that is from the pink-eye inflammation.  I do have  just a hint of cataracts in that eye. When I went back a few  weeks later, she referred me to the Cornea specialist.  I wish I had done that sooner and would not have gone the entire summer like this. question I enjoy your messages . smile

      Morning Kathy

So ....having gone to the cornea specialist.....has that helped?

I went to a consultant in 2 different hospitals before trying wet ones and they just kept giving me different things...none of them that workedbiggrin
