To Give Others Hope - Regarding Abscesses & Pain

Just checking in to tell everyone that finally the pain has stopped. So it has either been the passage of time or perhaps the heaps of probiotics I've started to take, or maybe the higher fiber diet I'm on, but either way I'm so relieved to just feel normal in the left lower quadrant again.
For reference I'm 39 years old. I'm 4 months out from the initial symptoms starting up, 3 months out from finishing up the antibiotics and now 1 month post colonoscopy (which thankfully only confirmed I had diverticulosis and also that scar tissue that had formed in the area of the abscess). I had a sigmoid abscess of just over 2 cm that was treated at home with antibiotics only.
So for those who had complicated diverticulitis - the pain can last for months, try not to be scared. But now I'm ok and I'm so grateful. Any questions please ask and I will do my best to answer.

I was just wondering if anyone else felt generally unwell. I'm on another 2 weeks of metronidazole and I just feel rotten, tired, agitated and slightly hot. The good part is the pain haa subsided (for time being) I'm eating better and going to the toilet better, thanks to laxatives but I'm at a bit of a loss with how I feel. Could it be the antibiotics?

Hi Richyai, yes I lost a few pounds during the ordeal and now that I'm so careful about my diet I cannot say that I've regained much. I do have energy again though and the pain is still gone for the most part. So glad to hear you're improving.

Hi Jcab, I think the BMs will improve when you are off of the antibiotics and the inflammation inside of your intestines has gone down. It took a good month for me to start to recover and even then I had a long road ahead of me. Try not to get too frustrated, you're still in the early stages.

Hi Patricia, your back on the antibiotics? I finished the flagyl a few days ago just on co-amoxcol until i see the specialist next tuesday then probably more antibiotics. No blood tests or CT so waste of time seeing him but i took ot on board myself and got my partner a district nurse to take a blood sample this morning and send it to the specialist. I'm still not 100% but I'm certain its allergies or sinus infection causing other symptoms, its hard to tell. My partner has checked my temp, blood pressure etc when I have a dizzy-do and everything is fine. Anyhow, how are you?

Apart from the antibiotics, movicol and ducoease I'm managing without any painkillers and anti spasam tablets. Sometiimes need milk of magnesia or wind settlers if needed but i think the antibiotics dont help with the upset stomach

So glad to hear you're improving. I am still doing good. Eating my 2 veggies and 2 fruit servings a day. I thought I ate healthily before, wow was I wrong! It was an ordeal but also an eye opening experience too. Best of luck!!

Hi Patricia, so sorry to hear you're still in pain. Yes I do think the dietary changes I made are what is helping me. I am also diligently taking about 50 billion (25 billion in the AM and 25 in the PM) units of probiotics every day, not sure if that's helping too. As I sit here I'm eating a bowl of raw celery and yellow pepper with hummus. Normally my morning snack would've been something salty but I've had to do away with that to make sure I get at least 2 servings of veggies in every day.
Worth mentioning is that leading up to the abscess I had been loosely trying to follow a keto diet, which is high protein and for myself, inadvertantly, low fiber. It just didn't dawn on me how important fiber is.
I also do eat seeds and nuts, as my doctor told me that they are fine. Everyone is different but I haven't had any issues so far with them.
Is there a reason for the antibiotics you're still on? My doctor does not prescribe antibiotics unless there is a confirmed issue.
I still get the occasional odd indigestion like pain and it will worry me that the diverticulitis is flaring up again but so far it's always subsided. Fingers crossed.....

Patricia also one last thing, I realized leading up to the abscess I had been taking a moderate amount of ibuprofen which is a no-no when it comes to diverticulitis. I would say I had been taking 400 mgs a day. Now I only use Tylenol and that's only if I absolutely need it.

Hi Patricia, I'm sorry to hear that you're suffering from that as well BUT I have noticed how many brave people are suffering with this and other conditions. I seen the specialist today, well one of the nurses that was actually more clued up on DD than him and my white blood count is still at 14 but my inflammation levels are down to roughly 40 (big difference from 196 a couple of months back) No antibiotics required at the moment, which I was very happy about! My dizzy, buzzing ears they both said wasn't related and to visit the Dr tomorrow to see if it is labryinthis/sinus problem? Have yo tired the FB DD groups? They are so helpful and friendly!!

Patricia I am so sorry to hear about the multiple myeloma. Best of luck to you with the treatments. I believe that can also cause pain, maybe that is contributing to the issue. Hopefully you can find a place of peace and feel healthy and like "yourself" again.

Thank you Rose. Yes it’s a tough road to travel. But like you all I have no choise. Had chemo on Tuesday. Have it every Tues and haven’t felt well since. Also Dr gave me flu and pneumonia shots. Really don’t think I’m strong enough for both of them but I got um just the same. Left stomach been kicking up pretty bad. Oh me oh my hate to do all this complaining but I know you all understand. It great that we have each other. Thank you all for the advice. We’re gonna get better.... trial and error I guess. God bless us all🙏🏻
