Treatment info for Blepharitis

Posted , 121 users are following.

Has anyone found treatment info specifically for Blepharitis? I'm told the same old things like "scrub with baby shampoo" and I'm not getting any better.

I'm frustrated and hope that some doctor somewhere has studied this terrible condition - and just want to find the answers!

Thank you,

Oliver, London

"Wet Ones" work! They're sold in the US, don't know about the UK, but use them at least 5x a day initially then a few times per day, then at least once a day. Its such a blessing, I had tried EVERYTHING before discovering they work and they were in my purse the whole time.

I totally agree about the Wet Ones.  They are the only thing that worked for me. You can order them from Amazon.

Just read that rose ointment helps with the itchy flaky aspect and helps it heal too!

I Oliver my name is Donna from Canada. I too have suffered from many many more years than yourself. I understand your frustration. I can tell you when I do which may help or not but here goes: every morning I use cleradex wipes. They contain teacher and all along with some other soothing essential oils I find them very soothing and cooling and they are antibacterial as they have Teatree oil in them. I also found a doctor near me that does a procedure called a blephex. This is a process where the doctor uses a tiny soft scrapping tool to scrub the inside of your eyelids it takes about a half an hour quite painless. But it cleans all the crust off your glands and allows them to breathe in between. By the way I have MGD I do not know what type of blepharitis you have. This procedure was very very helpful along with a mild dose of antibiotic some of this form return referred to as Dox. I now enjoy almost no discomfort and my tear flow is much much better. I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me anytime. God bless and never give up.

Baby Shampoo did not work for me, but dandruff shampoo does. You will need to wash your eyes in the morning after you wake up and also before you go to bed at night time. I use Nizoral or Head and Shoulders Medical Strength shampoos. Make sure to use the foam ONLY and scrub  gently the eye lids. Rinse with lots of water. I use the Head and Shoulders twice per week and Nizoral the rest of the time. I also use paper towels without lint to dry my eyes. Bounty works well. It is also important to drink a lot of water. I drink about 1.5 liters per day. This helps the eye moisture. I hope this helps you

    Hi Lynda

I was told my Blepharitis was oil related..I'm still going to try the Wet Ones ...I would imagine it will work? What do you think?

Also you mention throw away mascara brushes & to not "double dip" lol but like most women don't you usually need to put more than one dip into your mascara to get your desired look?

      Hi,

i threw away my eyeliners and stopped using mascara . Then researched natural ingredients in make up with the least amount of ingredients. I went with Josie Maran makeup.

i also avoid touching my eyes. I have dry eyes & use Restasis.

i now get allergy shots. It took me over a year to find a solution but the other day my eyes were so itchy. I rubbed them and guess what??? Blepharitis big time! So I think for me it will be a lifetime situation.

And yes Wet Ones really work for me.

Thanks I don't wear makeup daily & this blepharitis seems to come out only when I'm sick & have sadly been in bed & allowed my eyes to go without washing my face...I was in bed with a stomach virus..no matter how bad I'm feeling in the future I WILL climb out of bed & scub my eyes. 😔 I have oily skin to begin with ughhh.

Needless to say I will wear makeup in the future & will be sure to wash it off..

      Dear ginabp,

You need to use two mascara brushes, one for each eye. I use one mascara brush for both eyes now that it has been several years since I killed the Blepharitis.

It is worth using an extra brush or two to keep from reinfecting yourself. You should use 2 wash cloths, one for each eye, when washing off makeup or mascara (I use a water based mascara) as one eye could be healing faster and you do not want to reinfect with the wash cloth either.

You can buy the wands in lots of hundreds or more.

I have dry eye so do not chance double dipping into the mascara and breeding more germs. It is a small price to pay to keep it from coming back.

I have used the wipes on newly pierced ear too that got infected. Just rubbed the front and back for a day or two and it took care of the problem.

The solution they gave to use was water and Benzalkonium Chloride. When I saw that I knew I could try the Wet Ones wipes and sure enough they worked fast.

      Hope this helps,

      Dear KP,

It is only for a little over 3 months. I still use a throw away wand but 1 for both eyes. I just do not ever put a used wand in the mascara. If I need more I use another one.

I guess I am terrified of getting it back.

Thanks Lynda...saw my eye Dr again he made me realize the exact blepharitis I have its not the bacterial one it's the meibomian gland...Oil gland is clogged. It's not contagious where I have to worry about spreading from one eye to another or makeup issues. As long as I make sure to take my makeup off nightly and not fall asleep with it on...no need to worry about the wand spreading it to the other eye..I guess just replace makeup mascaras as I normally would when it dried out.

I do my warm compresses at night to help with the clogging, it opens it up...he also started me on Restasis for the dry eye that seems to be working...if I were to get bacterial infections them that's a?separate issue...thank you sooo much

      Dear ginabp,

I must have missed your question. I am sorry. I used 1 wand for each eye while I had Blepharitis. I now use 1 for both eyes and if I need more I use another clean wand.

I found my Bleph was caused by Staph. The wipes kill that but it does take over 3 months.

I was determined to kill it. When I quit the wipes and then I had some itching I jumped on it for a few days on that area. That happened 2 times after and then it was gone.

It was worth the wands to be free of worry.

      Hope this helps,

Lynda, as we approach Thanksgiving Day tomorrow just want to say how thankful I am for your research and  sharing with all of us who have suffered with this awful eye problem.  I too was told by top docs that my blepharitis was caused by "dry eye, clogged oil glands", and other numerous causes. And I am sure I have all of those, however,  Wet Ones has almost cured my red, itchy eyes plus taking all the precautions with my makeup.  I no longer use the steroids and am thrilled about that.

Thank you for telling us your experience.  You have given so many of us a great gift.

      Dear Rebecca and Sandra,

You are very welcome and I am sure you both would have done the same. I just knew others may want to know and thanks to some young people got me turned in the right direction on posting and where to look. I asked them how do I get this information out?

      Thanks again,

My doc also said that my problem was blocked meibomian glands and gave me several expensive treatments to unblock the glands, plus I purchased a special eye pillow to heat and use several times a day.  Then I read Lynda79's experience with her cure for blepharitis.  I bought and began to use Wet Ones, and initiated all the hygiene steps for eye makeup. The new regimen stopped my awful symptoms immediately.  I have been on eye steroids for almost 15 years and they never did what the Wet Ones achieved.  I have not had a flat up in over six months.

I am so very grateful to Lynda79 and would recommend Wet Ones treatment for anyone suffering.
