Turp experience and questions

Hi there,

JUst wanted to share my experience with my turp surgery. I'm 45yrs old, too young some say for me to having prostate issues but I put it down to my father side of the family (my father and uncles all currently suffer from enlarge prostates)

For the last couple of years been suffering from weak urine stream, having a full night sleep and waking up in the morning with the urge to go wee just to wee a small trickle. I also suffered from time to time having blood in the urine.

Went to see the Urologist, he did some testing, test on the strengh on my urine flow (very weak the doc said) he put a camera up my penis to see inside and we could see clearly that my prostate was enlarge and was putting pressure on my bladder which probably explained why sometimes I could see blood on my urine. I have a benign enlarged prostate, no cancer worries which is good.

While I decided if I wanted to have surgery, doctor put me on Avodart. It did help but I wasn't sure if I wanted to take antibiotics for the rest of my life. Avodart temporary reduces the size of the prostate but if you stop taking it, you will still have the same problem again and it will only get worse.

Dedided to have the surgery, I had it three weeks ago. spinal block, stayed in hospital one full day with a catheter inserted. Catheter was removed the following day in the morning, had to urine a few times into a container, followed by a scan machine pressed to my belly to see how much urine was left in the bladder. Passed the test and  was allowed to go home that day at midday.

I can see the immediate benefit of the surgery where my urine stream is very strong. When I get up in the morning with a full bladder, no more urine trickle, just a strong urine flow. On the other side, I'm still suffering from post surgery effects, for example, frequent urges to go to the toilet and pee ( I probably go every 40 to 60 minutes) blood on the urine and pain (burning/stinging) everytime I have to take a piss. The doctor says is normal for this symptoms to happen and it will take weeks before everything is back to normal. how long?  it depends on the individual. I can get an erection, it feels a bit different and I will suffer from retro ejaculation ( I was warned about this)

Anyone that had Turp done, how long it took until you where pain free? (no blood and pain)  Did you take any medicine to stop the pain or the bledding?

Thanks for reading,

Henry

Had turp july 14 2017 after going through a colon tear repair in oct 2016 which inflamed my already large prostate. Had to be cathed after colon surgery was sent home then rushed back to hospital not a le to pee, my god I thought I was going to die on the way back, took 660ml out. Cathed on and off for a month, after removal and finally healed colon tear things just kept going downhill with my abilities to pee, then in June thought I had a bladder infection and went to my urologist he recommended turp, I should have done it then! But decided feeling better after antibiotics to wait, the. Lock up to emergency room for 14 hrs, next day to urologist he had an opening next day at surgery center in Fresno, had the surgery and he said double size most men he operated on, took out twice as much tissue. Sent home next day, back to ear that Sunday with pain under back right rib with every breath, in hospital put through every test Ct scan, pain meds iv antibiotics same, and sent home that Friday, saying there was a little lung fluid pressing possibly against the rib, or possibly damage from being moved on the operation table couple times. Now three weeks post op still tripping that I won't be able to pee, mostly mental from the drama, have pain or phantom pain in bladder and penis

probably all from cathed and surgery, I just don't feel good, but have to try to think positive, keep thinking do I have another bladder infection? Because of pain when I pee at times. The guy in the hospital I was next to was there for cancer and was in major pain, and it tripped me out, when I was released I said best wishes to he and his wife, was a big shot for Hendricks Chevy in Clovis Ca, he passed the following sat, man wow. So as it is now the dr said. O cancer, thank god, see you in a month, I have xanax to calm me when needed, I have narco but don't take. Only tynol, I do read this can take up to 14 weeks to get better I sure hope so.

Hi John15876 -- I'm near San Francisco. Had TURP 11 weeks ago. Catheter removed 3 days after surgery. My stream was like being 21 years old after drinking a 6 pack. Urniation pain in the penis urethra subsided after 3 days. However, I still have nerve sensations after urniation that are annoying but not painful. They subside in 5 seconds. The scariest part for me was going several days with normal urination and then the urine turns bloody and out comes a clot the size of a nickel. Then clear again. It's been OK for a week now and I'm hoping I'm thorugh this. Doctor said this was normal. Urgency to pee has incresed from every 30 minutes after surgery to 2-3 hours now. I hope these comments decrease your anxiety somewhat.

Hi john15876. I had my TURP on May 9, 2017. I've posted two times before this. For me, it took until the 5th week for there to be no traces of blood in my urine. at all. Before that, there would be a few ml of blood tainted urine in the first voiding. That volume gradually decreased (I voided into a plastic beaker to monitor how much blood tainted urine there was whenever  I urinated). After my surgery I was cathed for 3 days. The first time I urinated the stream was strong and ir remains so. There was a burning sensation when I urinated but it was after I did so, not while I urinated. I checked for any UTI and there was none (even with a culture). So that eased my mind. I also would have an ocassional pang of sharp sensation in my urethra (what you call phantom pain?). By the 5th week that has also mostly gone away. Now I may feel it once in 2-3 days when I usedto feel it a few times a day after the surgery and into the 5th week.I remained patient in regards to the blood in the urine.By the 6th week (then about 2 weeks without blood) I went back to doing cardio at the gym, but only walking on the treadmeill, 3 miles 2x so far. No blood in my urine so I will go back to an elliptical for a bit now. I also had an ache in my pelvic area afetr the surgery and for about 5 weeks. That has mostly subsided since the blood stopped. I don't feel the urge to void as often but when I do, I void 200-300 mL (before TURP it was 25-100 mL, with effort). Before TURP I was retaining urine, as much as 600 mL. At my 5th week F/U the PVR was 50 mL; before TURP it would be 300-400 mL BTW, for various reasons I was cathed for 5 weeks before I had the TURP.

Now going into the 9th week post-op, all those nights of sleeping poorly, the anxiety (and it was mostly mental drama as you put it) are behind me.

I wish you a good recovery. Hang in there.

Thank you my brother! I think the three surgeries since oct 2013 when I was injured on the job right shoulder, 2016 colon repair, now Trup have taken a bit of a toll on me mentally. I am very thankful for my good doctors An now following all the rules set forth for me. Colonoscopy next, sleep disorder, then skin Dr all along with a new md to get me on high blood pressure An colestrol meds that don't make me sick or heart race An take them! I did the same with the flomax took it once in a while An tried tv vitamins which do not work. Have many male friends that suffer An will not go to the doctor for various conditions including prostate. Thank god for my wife

    Hi Henry,

I had the same operation two weeks ago but with a general anesthetic. I had the same problems as you except I was up about 5 times in the night to go to the toilet and as soon as I went back to bed I had the urge to go again. I had the catheter out after two days, a reasonable amount of blood and like you I had to pass three lots of water before they sent me home. Have got to go for another flow test in 4 weeks. I am aware of blood in the pee but do not know how long it will be before it clears. Some days are better than others but I still get that sensation at the end of my penis. Was you told how long this will last, I dont think there is a problem as every now and then I pass what seems to be a hard bit, Im guessing that is scab from the operation. I did not have laser treatment I had to have a hole drilled straight through the gland, I know this method is more intrusive than the laser but was told that I had to have a hole cut in it to reduce the size of the gland. Can you give me any more information.

    Regards,Keith

With the turp i had symptoms of bleeding, pain on urinating, urgency and frequency for 6 weeks. I had a very large prostate, so I think the larger the prostate, the longer the recovery. I also had the Greenlight laser twice before I had the turp and the recovery with the laser was 9 weeks both times, so I think the turp is a better operation.

Damn Bob I waited to darn long to finally give up on vitimans to solve my issues. Waited too long to see a specialist, did not take the meds as told, what a friggin nitemare this has been. My dr told me the largest non cancer thank god prostate he has seen, and removed a lot of tissue, it has been a challenge since I had to return to the er at a different hospital three days after having surgery in Fresno Ca at the surgical hospital with fever and back under right rib pain every breath in and out. Put through every pain Iv and antibiotic, Ct scan, come to finally figure out after a 5 day stay probably rolled me over on the operation table at some point damaging my rib area, had a guy sharing my room brought in day 2 at midnite stage four lung cancer brought me down big listening to his struggles, said goodbye to he and his wife that fri, he passed the following sat, my biggest worry is will I lock up again, will is pain in my lower half stop, ice, heating pads, hot baths, and I am now at day thirty from surgery and pray this gets better. I have Tylenol and xanax thank god to relax me, just want to get back to normal. It all started in thirteen with shoulder surgery on the job injury, then colon tear from not being able to poop, misdiagnosed for over a year, then sixteen oct surgery to repair colon, then sent home to bladder lock, back to er, cathed, and the real prostate things started to happen, after another trip to Madera Er for bladder lock finally got back to my urologist and he said u ready to fix it? I was cathed, yes! He had a next day opening June fourteen, so here I sit praying but understanding it could be worse. I have many male friends that have never seen a dr. Are scared, and are suffering with issues, thank god for my wife making me go, forcing me to stop being a baby and face up to facts and reality

Hi John, You are right it can always be worse. After the first time I went to the ER to be cathed 5 years ago, I learned to cath myself. Had to do that every couple of weeks, then once a month for about a year after my first laser. After my second laser 18 months later I no longer had to cath. Had a turp about 18 months after the second laser, in June 2015. So far no problems, but have been taking dutasteride since Nov, 2015 to slow down the growth of the prostate. It was 305 grams before I had the turp, about 200g 6 months later. By Nov 2016 after a year of dutsteride it was up to 235g. Hopefully the dutasteride will delay the growth, but at least no symptoms (knock on wood) so far.

Like today started out good till afternoon pain when I pee and shooting pains at times in penis just wondering is I have a bladder infection

I had pain at the start and end of urination for about 6 weeks. You can buy urine test strips at the drug store and test your own urine, or go to the doctor to test it. With a bladder infection my urine burned all the time and the frequency was several times an hour.
