Unable to orgasm after Total Hysterectomy

Posted , 15 users are following.

I had a total hysterectomy 15 months ago with removal of the cervix of course, and have not been able to have an orgasm since.  My lovely doctor let me go back on HRT patches to see if it would help and also to stop severe hot flushes and vaginal dryness.  Hot flushes easing so is the dryness but the Big O is still missing.  My partner and I are absolutely gutted.  I remember the surgeon saying to me after the 6 week check up "Now go and get on with your life",  When I said I hadn't tried the love life yet, he just looked on the floor.  Wonder if he knew as  I have since discovered online how many women are suffering like me, I wonder why there are no warnings from the surgeons that this might happen post hysterectomy.  I am so angry I feel like writing to the surgeon so may be he'll think twice about the absolute necessity of  doing this op to other women.  Unless anyone on here can tell me it comes back after all ths time, I have lost an important part of my life.

I don't think I'm worrying to the extent that it's stopping me having the O. My doctor doesn't think it's worry either, especially as I did not expect this problem.  I went online before the op and couldn't find anyone complaining of this problem, but I don't think I googled the right words!  Did you have your cervix removed as well?  I wonder if it depends on what nerves they have severed?  And this is the dilemma as to why some ladies are fine like yoursdelf and some are not - like me

Thanks Ann Marie it gives me hope to hear you're basically OK with the 'O', it's just that it's been sooo   long - 15 months.  Did yoi have the cervix remoned as well?  Just need to know for my research.  All the best

i know this is an old message thread but wanted to leave a comment for those google searching forums about this topic such as myself. i had a total hysterectomy including removal of the fallopian tubes. they left my ovaries and removed my cervix, my uterus, and a large fibroid tumour. my surgery was 8.5 weeks ago. what I just learned yesterday was that orgasms are still achievable but very lacklustre. they are mild instead of intense like before. the cervix and uterus used to contract on orgasm and made them intense and i felt it through my entire being. if you are unable to have them anymore it may depend on what type of O you had prior to surgery and what the stimulation point was. if you had G spot stimulated orgasms or induced from cervical stimulation than that would explain why you can not attain any at all. if you had clitoral stimulated orgasms you should still be able to attain those (but sadly they will be a lot less intense). it has been 4 years since this post. curious as to if you have had any improvement. i am not on HRT because I have my ovaries still. I used to have the BEST orgasms and I am now in mourning of the loss of them. However, I am no longer in pain and no longer at risk of cervical cancer so for that I am grateful. it is only 8.5 weeks out. i am hoping things improve even just a little in regards to O intensity. 🤞 Time will tell.

Hi Trinity, no I have not had an orgasm since the operation. I was not told there would be problems. When I went back and said to the surgeon there were problems he just looked on the floor, made no specific comment about this and replied to the effect that he'd had all the bad luck as all the mesh that had broken up was difficult to get out. All a lie, as the surgical nurse told me the hysterectomy was straight forward. I hate the man, sorry if such a comment is not allowed on this forum. I'm still on a low dose estrogen HRT patch but having to fight for this every 6 months as they think I am too old for it. If I'd have known removal of the cervix would have caused this disaster I would have requested my prolapsed uterus to be sown back up again like it was before but the medics and others all bang on about what a great thing a hysterectomy is and that a woman does not need her womb and cervix. I asked the surgeon not to remove my cervix which was completely without any cancer, and he sternly said he "would do what (he) sees fit when he gets me on the operating table". I hope you are fine in the fullness of time. Take care

Let's hope the HRT gets you back on track.  Some years ago I was on HRT and testosterone patches due to low libido.  The testo patches were great but they have stopped prescribing them now, so I am not sure if anyone could get their doc to prescribe testosterone gel IF the non 'O's after hysterectomy are due to low testosterone.  I am trying to establish if this problem is low estrogen/testosterone or removal of the cervic and/or uterus.  I did laugh at your 'new hubby' news of your friend, go girl.  So assuming your friend had cervix out as well?  Wishing you all the best.

Hi there, sorry to hear of your plight! I have had a total hysterectomy both ovaries and cervix removed - 6 weeks ago. I am 51. May I ask, have you and your partner tried using a vibrator during  play together?  I realise this is another taboo subject among us all but my hubby and I were at our wits end prior to surgery because of the pain I was experiencing (2 years of pain) during intercourse! It was my GP's nurse that suggested it - as they can help to relax you! I have to say "she was a genius" - it worked for us! You can order online etc.. I was so worried reading about your stories that I needed to find out if I still could....  As I am not allowed full intercourse until 10 weeks post op (due to repair work) we just experimented (sorry to be blunt) and all was good for us.  Apologies if I have offended anyone but sometimes it helps to put it out there. Best of luck xx

Thanks for your fantastic reply Elaine, I for one am not offended at all.  Yes got a vibrator, one of the best I believe, and it's not working.  I am encouraged that you and other ladies are ok, even though you've had the same op as me.  I am wondering if it depends on what nerves they have cut or not which decides the O or not.  Am awaiting reply from surgeon, if he writes back that is.   I will let you know.  All the best.

Bless you, I am so rooting for you here - it is so important for us girlies to have a great time with our other halves - let's face it, they have been through it too. You could be right about the nerve endings and some nerve endings take an age to recover. Best of luck xx

I am hoping the nerves recover if this is the prob but think everything should be ok by now I am 14 month post op

Hi I'm nearly 4 weeks post operation and I had everything removed. I'm so hoping this isn't the case for me as I'm only 34 so I still have along time ahead of me

Hi Zoey, some of us are OK, I am trying to find out why I have problems like this, but you will see from the posts, some of us ladies are OK.  Please let me know how you get on further down the line.  Take care.
