Uncomfortable feeling Under Left Lower Ribs and varying bowel movements

Posted , 173 users are following.

To try cut a long story as short as I can I have basically had an uncomfortable feeling under my lower left ribs and some irregular bowel movements for the last 3 months that don't seem to show any signs of disappearing. Just wondered if anyone has experienced anything similar?

With regards to the feeling in the ribs at no point has it been massively painful to the point where I have needed to take any pain killers or anything like that. It just feels more uncomfortable than anything else rather than painful as if there is something under my ribs that should be there. The lower left ribs feel bruised to touch but again not that painful.

I play football and go to the gym and have been able to continue both without any trouble or issues.

With regards to my bowels they have just been a bit all over the place since it started really. At first I kind of felt constipated and was having bowel movements but size and quantity wise there wasn't as much coming out as normal or as expected and had a feeling of not fully emptying.

In the last month that has changed slightly in that I have had a couple of what I would call regular sized and quantity movements but they seem to happen every 3 or 4 days and in between the movements are the fairly small quantities mentioned and usually very irregular shapes and sizes although the feeling of not emptying seems to have gone or reduced.

I have been to see my GP 3 or four times since this started. First couple of times they had a feel around and couldn't feel anything untoward and suggested it was just a bit of constipation so suggest some over the counter laxitives and then when that didnt work prescribed some Laxido sachets which again didnt do anything really.

I have now had a blood test and an chest xray that I am awaiting the results of and have an ultrasound booked in but that isn't for another 3 weeks.

In the meantime I just really suffering a bit mentally not knowing what this is and obviously worrying this could be something serious. Just keep searching and searching online and must have diagnosed myself with about 25 different things which I know is silly but can't help it. I am someone that never usually gets ill so this is very out of the ordinary for me.

I am only 32 and lead a pretty active lifestyle, eat well, don't smoke and don't drink too much, weight and BMI is all in the decent range - all things which my GP keeps telling me means that it being something serious is unlikely but at the same time it doesn't show any sign of easing up.

Not had any diarrhea at all in the 3 months although stools have been pretty soft the whole time even when not much is coming out. Not had any blood in my stools that I have been able to notice.

Its just so frustrating as for 3 months whilst I have been able to go to work etc I just feel like I am constantly at about 70%. I feel ok physically but not great and mentally I just feel shot to pieces.

Obviously I need to wait for my results and take from there but just seems such a drawn out affair to try and convince GP that something just doesn't feel right and just wondered if anyone had suffered anything similar to this?

Ok. so im going to try and write this so it makes sense as Siri wrote the last one for me and it didnt make much sense.

1 year ago - endoscopy and biopsy on small bowel.

Specialist said slight hiatus hernia and slight damage to the villi in my small bowel.(doc was thinking along the lines of celiac) but ruled it out as the bloods showed negative and no vitamin deficiences.Doc came to the conclusion that it was more of a food intolerance and told me to go easy on the gluten and come back in a year for another test.

With that being said, i carried on as normal.

I original had an endoscopy because i was getting pain in my left shoulder blade and some discomfort in the middle of my back when i swallowed...i could literally feel the food going down my food pipe and i had convinced myself something was wrong with my esophagus.

    Since the test i have carried on as normal, but cut out alot of Gluten, but didnt cut out my alcohol or coffee consumption (i drink heaps of coffee, and drink alcohol on weekends but have a tendency to overindulge when i do).  I havent had any major flare ups until about 6-8 weeks ago when after taking 2 anti inflammatories on an empty stomach (i thought they were panadol) i felt terribly ill, dizzy, nausea and upset stomach.  Since then i have had this niggly pain in my left upper quad, under my ribs.  I feel it mostly straight after i have eaten or sometimes when i wake in the night and i start worrying about it, it seems to come on worse.  These last two weeks have been the worst and i have been watching carefully for triggers.  I have also joined several different facebook groups to try and figure which of my symptoms are most similar to including, ibs, gastritus, hiatus hernia and reflux discussions.  So far i have found that the major triggers to this pain are; onions, pistachios, cashews, shallots, coffee , chocolate and stress.  I seem to fit mostly into the gastritus category.  Ive had some blood work done which has turned out fine. I have eliminated gluten just in case and will go back to basics in food for a while...ive found that bananas ease the pain and coconut water seems to ease it as well.  I have some reflux tablets that i will take for a month and monitor for differences.  My usual symptoms are as follows;

Niggly sensation under left rib (almost like a stinging sensation)

    brain fog

dizziness and nausea(when the pain is at its worst)

pain in stomach is noticed more on sitting

pain is felt in left shoulder blade (like a pulled muscled or trapped wind) and also a pulling tight feeling under the collarbone on the left side.

pain is worse after swallowing and sometimes can be felt in middle of back and left shoulder blade when swallowing.

I hope that this has helped someone out there.  If anyone else experiences the shoulder blade pain please let me know as it will be a little bit assuring.

Look up illocecall valve syndrome. Also, I just realized what a huge trigger pistachios are for me too!

You may have seen my posts above, I too experience pain in left side, shoulder blade and collar bone. It's been a year now sad Feels like something is under my left bottom rib, sitting down I can feel it more and sometimes when laying down. Laying on my right side helps me sleep.

I've had a sigmoidoscopy, regular xrays, blood tests, celiac tests, etc. Nothing came out of those.

Just had a full contract IV CT scan yesterday, I'll let you guys know what the results were.

      Hi Stan,

Yes definitely let us know.  I am on a few facebook groups and these types of symptoms seem to be most common with people that have gastritus or reflux...do you also feel sometimes like you have a pulled chest muscle?  I tend to think that its all related to stomach issues as the shoulder problems seem to be more noticeable when i am having the stomach pain.

Thanks Lisa, i looked it up and it seemed to make sense with what i have been experiencing, ive just started to take some reflux medication and that seems to have made some difference...Im also wondering if it has anything to weight (as i have put on an extra 4 kgs in the last 6 months and I am also wondering about premonopause and whether the drop in hormones could be causing more reflux and stomach issues.

Well the CT came up clear, which is good news more then bad news. Good news as I pretty much convinced myself I had some type of cancer (crazy I know), so the CT alleviated the mental aspect of my situation Bad news is that I don't have an answer to the pain sad I'll keep on searching.

      Here was results:

      1. Sigomoid-diverticular disease w/o acute diverticulitis.

      2. No acute intraabdominal processes found.

      3. Bilateral non-obstructive renal calculi found.

It would take me an hour to type out what happened to me but basically mine started with rib sensation, constipation and reflux. Them I have been severely sick for 6 months with a ton of other symptoms and I've seen 5 specialists and 3 hospitals stays over it. I couldn't go to the bathroom for 6 WEEKS. We tried EVERYTHING. So after the colonoscopy cleanse it was more manageable. I think I was getting toxic poisoning from the back up. Anyway, my reflux disappeared at that point and replaced with a strange sensation of standing on a rocking dock in the water for months. Misery. Finally I started getting massage and taking 1-2 caps of miralax before bed and started birth control!I felt like I was having hormone issues but blood work was normal. I am totally back to normal as of Easter now and I have no clue why... but that's all ive done! I still can't go to the bathroom without miralax but the illeocecal valve syndrome sounds like 100% my issue too. They're sending me to Cleveland clinic now...

I don't see how ileocecal valve syndrome could be tied to the bruised rib feeling. Do you think they are associated?

I started out last year with the rib sensation for months and then manifested into other things.... so I don't have a clue if they're related but it fit what I was dealing with. Also, I truly believe the rib thing is a nerve, muscle or gas issue. I used activated charcoal and flexiril muscle relaxors and got relief. So I don't know what one helped, if any.

      Hi Lisa,

I am having same stinging sensation under my left ribs. I had an ultrasound on stomach that came back clear. I suppose endoscopy will be next. How are you going now? Hope you have found some answers and relief!

      Hi Lisa and Lisa,

Have you found any answers? I am suffering from the same issues. There is a group on here for perimeno/menopause with as many as 1400 responses with women having similar issues that are related.

I have been having very similar problems and I may have a solution.

For me, starting January, I started to feel a lot of discomfort underneath my left ribs towards the center of my torso. It began with waking up one night feeling like I had a side ache.  Since then, there hasn't been any pain, but I have been extremely uncomfortable.  I noticed that I could not eat as much food either without getting full.  I was burping a lot more and my bowel movement seemed very irregular. The best way to describe the discomfort is that it felt like somebody was constantly poking me in the ribs.

I too, have seen a doctor, had a cat-scan, blood tests, antibiotics, etc. The only thing that came back was that I had the H-Pylora bacteria which could cause ulcers, but I have had ulcers before and it didn't seem to match the description because I haven't been feeling pain. I kept coming to the conclusion more and more that it had to be something related to my stomach or large intestine or Spleen.

In any case, I eventually realized that a lot of my clothes are tight around my waste. This is due to me gaining quite a bit of wait lately.  I didn't think it would necessarily be the problem because the discomfort was up around my ribs. However, I purchased wider clothes and realized that I should be in larger sizes than I have been wearing. Almost instantly, things have greatly improved.  I wouldn't say I am at 100% from where I was before, but I am at least at the 85% or higher mark and I believe it will get better as I wear more comfortable clothes.

This may or may not be anybody's issue here, but I feel it was mine and I feel so much better now. I feel silly that I had to pay a doctor and go through all of these tests to figure out my belt is too tight. I think this happened kind of like the idea of putting a frog in hot water. My clothes got tighter so gradually that I didn't realize how tight they were and that they could be putting pressure on my organs that would effect my stomach.

Anyways, it's worth a shot. Consider your clothes your wearing around your waste. Everything from your underwear to your belt.

This is for whoever is out there reading this...  I've contributed to this thread before, but I have found something I believe will help.  After visiting a ton of Doctors, including Naturopaths, Chiropractors, and Physical therapists... I finally heard something that makes sense.

Last year the chiropractor told me I had arthritis in my thoracic spine (middle back (a tiny bit higher).  She didn't tell me what I would feel because of it, and I didn't ask - silly me?!?  I just knew that my spine didn't hurt at the time.. although I was feeling the pain on my lower left rib.. she did not connect the two and neither did I.  The pain is also sometimes on my right rib, and sometimes at other points in my ribs.. but most of the time it was my lower left rib.

Anyhow.. I saw another doctor yesterday, and although that doctor was stumped when I shared my story about my rib pain, she brought in another doctor in the office - one with more experience. The other doctor wanted me to get another xray of my spine.  She said that what she would be looking for is arthritis in my spine (mid/upper back - look it up).  And that if I had arthritis in my spine, it could be messing with a nerve and could definitely be causing pain in my ribs... including my lowest rib and it wraps around!  Anyhow - she suggested physical therapy!   As luck would have it, I had scheduled a 90 minute massage for today, and my new massage therapist also happens to be a physical therapist.  I asked her about my rib pain, and she mentioned the Thoracic spine could be causing the pain in my rib!!  ... Crazy, right!?  This has been almost an entire year, numerous doctors, numerous blood tests, colonoscopy, endoscopy, xrays, ultrasounds, etc...  She not only gave me a regular massage, but did not myofascial as well.. as she was certified to do that.  And you know what...It actually helped.  She did this thing where she pushed hard in between all of my back ribs - between the rib bones - there is a name for it, but I don't recall what she called it.   It hurt like hell, but also felt good at the same time!   As some of already know, exercise really helps arthritis.. so be sure to exercise too!  Curcumin also does wonders for arthritis.  Something else to know.. tons of people get arthritis, and it doesn't always cause pain... until it hits or interrupts a nerve or something.

I truly hope this helps everyone!!!

Interesting... just today my doc mentioned that it could be muscular-skeletal issue. As we have exhausted a lot of the digestive points of view. CT's, blood work, stool tests, scopes, etc. Might have to look at a different path.

Thank you Traci, i will keep that in mind...i was told a few years ago that i had spondylitus or something like that...i went to a physio the other day and she massaged all around my shoulder blade, it does feel better although i still have a sensation in my chest that feels like a pulled chest muscle.  Ill book a massage also and see how i go.keep us posted

Interesting you post this. I have always thought it could be the same skeletal muscle issue however, I have issues with stomach acid that I suspect could be tied together.

Your post got me to thinking. I remembered a bone with a sharp edge described in Health class as the Zyphoid process. I looked it up and here's what I found. After probing around with my finger I believe this could be what I have to deal with. Try to copy/paste this link. Let me know what you think.

I have had some good results with the myofascial massage also, but I did not get much relief from my last one. It was about my 6th massage. I also recently had my ileocecal valve(connects small and large intestines) get stuck closed for a couple days. My physical therapist was able to massage it to get it open again. Has anyone seen an applied kinesiologist before? I saw some articles about them helping with All kinds of muscle pain, but others say their fake.

      Hi Traci

I too have had the left under rib pain, and i also have just found out that i have arthritus in my thoracic spine.  Are you still having good results with the massage and curcumin?  It would help greatly if you can let me know how you are going.  My pain was under my left breast around the rib where it meets the breast bone (where the underwire sits)  it would be more noticeable on sitting or slouching and it would feel like there was something sticking into me.

      Thanking you in advance

Thank you so much for sharing! I have scoliosis along with recent rib stinging pain and havent really thought about the connection with thoracic spine. Are you still doing better?
