Unexplained Chronic Nausea

Hi all

I am writing in the hope that someone can relate to what I am going though and maybe offer some support or advice.

Seven weeks ago I woke up feeling extremely nauseous. I also had bad muscle pains, joint pains, a headache every day (now gone), and felt extremely fatigued; so fatigued that some days I find it hard to walk around as my legs feel like paper on bad days. I have been like this every single day for weeks. I have actually had similar symptoms on other occasions in the past. On those occasions, it has usually lasted about six weeks and then disappeared. This time it is showing no signs of abating. I lay on my bed most days feeling too sick to move around.

Because this has happened before, my GP thinks it might be M.E and I am waiting to go to a clinic to see someone about it. Meanwhile, each day is like torture to me.

I wake up very nauseous as soon as I open my eyes. I can not bear to eat until around midday but usually feel slightly better for eating something....if it does not give me bad wind and I end up burping for hours. I am just eating tiny amounts often. I have acid reflux but my throat isn't sore with acid. I also have a hiatus hernia though it's very small. I am on PPIs for this.

I can not take anti sickness meds as I react badly to them. No doctor will give me them so I have to brave this without any help. I cut out caffiene, I don't drink alcohol, and I eat a healthy diet...I have to because I have chronic kidney disease, my cholesterol has suddenly gone up, and I am high end of normal for blood sugar. In fact, I am on so many restrictions it seems sometimes like there is only veg left!

I am waiting to see a gastroenterologist as my GP is hoping he will do a colonoscopy to rule out bowel disease. I don't want it. I have to have CT scans every six months because I had kidney cancer two years ago, and I get so anxious beforehand and go to pieces. I have one due in two weeks that is causing me a huge amount of stress. I have to have the dye this time too and I am scared of it. I have claustrophobia.

I have been to the doctor about five times in seven weeks. It has been deduced that I am depressed to boot...who wouldn't be? Otherwise all blood tests have been fine and physical exam doesn't point to anything. I have just done a stool test and awaiting results. My GP really doesn't know what's wrong with me. I ended up in casualty one day as I collapsed on my stairs. I had been in a bad way for about five weeks. My sats were okay, blood test fine, chest x-ray fine..sent home.

I am starting to go out of my mind methinks! I am worried and sometimes it feels like I can't breathe through such stress. I get light headed, feel almost depersonalized, and sweat with fear at times.

Has anyone suffered in this way and for so long without diagnosis? I would welcome any kind of response.

Thanks smile

Dear Sue, I know your email on chronic nausea is several years old, but I have

a friend who has been suffering with this problem of chronic nausea (no vomiting)

and dizziness for three years, and is now hospitalized with multiple problems caused by his being so depressed that multiple attempts to cure him have failed he got so depressed and near suicidal that he has been wasting away. He needs

    hope.

When I discovered this group I offered to try to contact some of the

people whose symptoms and experience sound so much like his, to see

if any of them had found a cure or even improvement. He needs hope and

years of following the psychiatric theory that it's caused BY depression

(rather than it being the cause of his present depression) have all struck out.

Do you have any words of hope? any new routes to follow? Endocrinology?

The only three days of light he has had in three years was three days following

a joint replacement where he suddenly woke up without this problem and felt

good. It turned out it was an Anti-nausea compound injection they give to patients during? right after surgery? and it lasted several days at home before it wore

off.  They then tried this in pill form and it didn't work. Apparently it contained a

steroid too and this caused doctors to advise against it. But he is almost a senior

and would this be dangerous at his age, to be "on" such an anti-nausea medication on a long-term basis, if this is the only thing that has ever worked???

Thanks for any advice you can help with.

      Emilie;

Hi my name is Terry and I've been stricken with the same thing for the last 2 years with multiple scans and doctors and no answers. Does he also have a nagging pain on his left side right under the rib cage.. and sometimes the pain moves around his abdomen and chest? Also weight loss due to inability to eat most of the time? Please reply and we can compare notes and symptoms. I used to be a city bus driver but this condition has kept me literally tied to the bed since i contracted it. I say contracted because one day en route to work i got out of my car and felt weak and faint and could not dare drive a bus. My wife took me to the ER and heart and all organs they say are fine. But it never feels that way. My last gastro doctor did several scopes front and rear and found constant inflammation througout my digestive system. . But no cause. Its still there so I requested a new gastro doctor with 31 yrs experience whom i will see in 3 weeks. Tell him to stay strong for loved ones.. i know how tough it is.. as a retired army combat vet some days i feel like crying my eyes out. Take care

      Terry

Emilie, I have had a similar problem and have tried everything. I look forward to a procedure so I can feel good for a few days.

The next thing I will try is Occupational and Environmental medicine.

Mine started slowly about 4 years ago and happened when I ate. Then it got constant. I had my gallbladder out and things got worse. The anxiety and depression on top of nausea is awful.

If my next step has any success, I will post results.

Sue, I just saw your post of over a year ago. I do hope you are better and yes I have nausea so much of the time. Your anxiety and depression are understandable. Meds helped me with both but nausea is still there. Good luck.

HEY I know this was posted over a year ago but I am just coming across a very similar problem. For the last month and a half I have woken up almost every morning with debilitating nausea and I am un able to do anything till about 1 pm. I'm a university student and I have really struggled focusing on my classes as I am waking up at 6:30-7 every morning to throw up and then not have a appetite all day. I also have acid reflex and have been taking medication for it (doctors suggestion for the problem) and it has not helped. It's been a month and a half now and I've done every test under the planet for my stomach and nothing has come up with a solution. Maybe by now you have got some answers and can help me because at this point it's starting to wreck imporntant aspects of my life.

This sounds very familiar to what I have. About a month and a half ago I got what I assumed was the flu (Nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, etc.) That lasted a couple days. The fever went away but the nausea and vomiting have remained every day for over a month now. Been to two general doctors, a GI specialist, even the hospital. They ran multiple stool, blood and urine tests which everything came back normal. I have bad days and terrible days. I got an endoscopy which revealed gastritis and esophagitis but the doctor chocked that up to the vomiting. Going to get an ultrasound tomorrow to check for gallbladder issues. Hope you find your answers sue.

Hi Sue, I live in the U.S. and have suffered all my life with nausea, gas, bloating. About 10 years ago a new gastroenterologist sent me to UCLA to get a Hydrogen Breath test to check for SIBO.  Sure enough the bacteria in the small intestine can move into the stomach and cause a lot of symptoms that do not go away with PPIs.  They gave me antibiotics and told me I would probably have to repeat them a few times a year.  After doing this for about 5 years, I saw a show called Doug Kaufman's Know the Cause which is on the internet too.  He believes that fungus causes the mycotoxins and a proper non fungal diet, along with either Nystatin or Fluconazole would rid the body of the toxins.  My gastro allowed me to try it instead of the antibiotics and it did the same as the antibiotic treatment.  Afterwards you need to replenish your good gut bacteria with some probiotics with Bifacterium Infantis (sp?).    I hope that these tips might help you. They can also test for h pylori bacteria which I never seemed to have even though I always had acid reflux and felt like I had an ulcer every so often.

Sounds suspiciously like the way my fibromyalgia nightmare began 20 years ago...I wish my headaches stopped as quickly as yours. My diagnoses have ranged from disc damage to multiple sclerosis.... finally settling on fibromyalgia around 19 years ago. Stomach problems have been an issue for years & not part of the basic profile used for diagnosis of fibromyalgia. I have many problems that are unrelated to the stereotype fibromyalgia patient....I have inter joint swelling & bleeding , chronic waitlist , I am unable to exercise as the mildest repetitive movement tears my muscle fibres & connective tissue. If you're seeing a GP & they can ask about the possibility of fibromyalgia my Dr tells me it's often misdiagnosed as M.E. , it is so important you get the right treatment from the beginning & that means the correct diagnosis. If it's M.E. good luck I'm not an expert at all, your symptoms sound so similar to some of My own that I just wondered....tho I sincerely hope not. Lansoprazole is very good at controlling nausea & making eating less of a challenge, I understand how much of one it is , I've lost 5st so I really sympathize, if I'd been overweight I'd be ok , but the Holocaust camp look isn't a good one & tho I eat as much as possible & sometimes that's a lot of Hagen Daas for desert....I cannot put weight on to save my life.

I hope you can find an answer to your problems & you get the help back to good health you need.
