Urine culture is back!! I need some help or advice

Posted , 9 users are following.

Long story short.. I had surgery almost 5 eeeks ago. It was a gynaecology laparoscopy to remove endometriosis and they fitted in the Mirena coil. Since surgery I've had constant infections and super bugs keep growing on swabs and urine samples BUT today my surgeon came to see me as I was in hospital over night from collapsing and she said to me that the results are in and I have Pseudomonas aeruginosa in my urine and she has never heard of this before. Any anyone experienced this?

My symptoms are middle and lower back pain (they won't check my kidneys), sickness, diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, tiredness, dizziness, loss of appetite and abdominal pain and my whole body is aching. Has anyone has this before? I have had issues since surgery with having vaginal E-coli, I got a mild form of MRSA after surgery and then I got a UTI and now this 😔 Can someone please share with me how long their symptoms lasted and what this actually is because google is telling me it's a deadly infection 💔

Amy, is there any way you can get a different GP?   Is there a way you can see a Urologist?

I am just baffled by what I read on hear about the state of health care in the UK.

The health system here is shocking. I can't see a specialist without a GP federally and she won't do it so I'll ask to see a gynaeurologist. I will be seeing the other female GP from now on when I need too it's just a nightmare to see her it could be 3 weeks before an appointment. There's this thing were I can ring up and get an emergency appointment the same but i can't choose a dr it's randomly picked with who's free

Is there a way to pay out of pocket to see a specialist?

I rang bupa today-£250 for a 10 minute consultation £3800 for the removal of the endometriosis that they left and £800 to see a urologist for them to ring a few tests.. I don't have that kind of money

    Hi Amy,

Just a thought......  I know you shouldn’t have to, but would it be worth seeing a private doctor if no one will listen on the nhs? You may not be in a financial position to do this, I don’t know, but only a thought!! Very concerning! Don’t neglect yourself, you need to make someone sit up and listen. It’s disgraceful!!

Hoping and praying for you and all you dear ladies who are suffering on here. It really is a hard life!

    Keep in touch.

    Much love xx

So sorry, I didn’t realise that going private had already been discussed. What I did though was see a private GP for £100 and he referred me for tests back to the nhs. May work for you!

    Xx

Oh my word thank you for telling me that you could see a private GP and still get the treatment on the NHS I didn't even release that was possible to do I just thought it was one or the other. There is a private GP near me costing £180 for a 20 minute appointment I just don't know if that's even long enough 😢 It will take me weeks to get it together though as I'm only getting sick pay right now and that's not much 😢 See what happens Monday xx

I have the same thing. I got it from surgery 10 years ago. It will not go away. It flares up every 3 months and I have to get a picc line every time. It goes to a full blown infection within days! I have 3 antibiotics left to treat it! According to the urine culture results it grows resistant to every antibiotic I try. I have asked my infectious disease doctor numerous times "what happens when i run out of antibiotics?" They brush me off and act like I'm stupid for even asking. They act is if everything is fine. Thing is....I'm not uneducated and have researched this for 10 years!!! I know I'm gonna die from it. No one wants to cure it...they just treat the problem as it comes and that's why I'm in this dangerous situation. I'm to the point of moving to Germany so I can get phage therapy. Our system sucks!!! They can spend billions on producing erections, and pain pills that kill more people than cocaine and heroin combined but my urinary tract infection is gonna kill me. No one cares. I have given up. Once I get down to 1 antibiotic left I'm just gonna let it go and take me. I have completely lost hope.

      Hi Andy,

You are in the same situation as me. I’m on my last two antibiotics and it’s terrifying!! I’ve had exactly the same as you. When I ask what will happen when those two antibiotics stop working for me, they just shrug their shoulders and say don’t think like that!! It’s truly soul destroying as like you we both know that we are going to die from  sepsis. I’m so scared. The pain when the infection goes full blown is worse than childbirth!! Have you tried the bladder health UK? Have you been referred to any London specialist?

      Please let me know.

      Kind regards,

      Sam

I live in the United States. It's an epidemic apparently from what I've heard. Super bugs are on the rise and nobody knows what to do about it. Germany has something called phage therapy. They can literally place bactrophage int your system and it attacks and kills the bad bacteria. It's eventually going to replace antibiotics. I want to go do it so bad but it is going to be pricey relocating to Germany for months while they try to grow phages for my body. They're having a lot of success with it. I know I have come to grips with the fact that I'm going die from it eventually but we gotta keep fighting. As far as specialists.... I have had 10 different urologists, 3 different infectious disease doctors, And honestly nobody could tell me s**t. Its disgraceful.

Also look into making master tonic at home. I have been taking it for a year. It keeps it from going full blown out of control. It's a home remedy. The next time you get an infection get your pic line and as soon as you're done with the picc line...start the master tonic... it should kind of help it from going crazy.

Andy, what was the operation you got started all this and how did it turn into a UTI?  What is the tonic you are using?

      Hi Andy,

Yes please tell us what the master tonic is??

I also heard they do phages in Georgia Russia (eastern Europe. Not sure how good they are, but an I ask which antibiotics everyone on this site are taking? I take Cephalexin as well as Trimethoprim. It’s holding things for now, but for how long, I don’t know. I’m going on my last family holiday this year, as I don’t know when this evil thing is going to finish me off!!

It just breaks my heart that so many of us are dealing with this. I cannot understand how this has gone on so long without a cure. I left the Information for master tonic in my comment. You have to really be able to stomach hot and vinegar. You have to take it like a shot of whiskey. I take it everyday. A full shot glass. When I get infected I take 2 shot glasses A-day and I did a test on myself when I was full blown infected. I took 2 shots A-day for 2 weeks and went back to the doctor in my urine test came back clear. The only badd part is you cannot run out or the infection will flare up. I have been having success with it so far so good. I ran out and did not take any for 2 weeks and the infection came back full throttle and I had to go to the doctor and get a pic line with antibiotics. I can Honestly say that it has innocent saved my life. I don't know how long it's going to work for but as of right now it's working for me. I know Ginger root interacts with some medications so you might want to check with your doctor before you start taking it.

Google Master Tonic recipe. There are also videos on how to make it. I take a shot a day. 2 shots if your infection flares up. Talk to your doc if you are on medicine. Ginger root interacts with some medicine. I am lucky right now.... because I am not on any medication.

I got the infection from a catheter or a cystoscopy. Not sure. It was right after I got my catheter out. I've had it ever since. 10 years now.

      What was yours from?

      Hi Andy,

Thanks for the info. If only I could do that. My problem is now that after being on all these antibiotics for 3 years, my whole digestive tract is no good. I have severe acid reflux and all in all take 28 tablets a day, just to stay alive!! All brought on by a bladder infection!! Crazy

Mine was also brought on by having to self catheterise. It’s a nightmare!!

I had only the typical ecoli uti that most women get.  I believe mine was caused by thinning tissues due to lack of estrogen.   Mine went on for nearly a year with many doses of antibiotics.  I finally cured it after going on an antibiotic daily for a few months.  However, that left with with enterococcus in my urine, but I am asymptomatic now for a year.  I worry constantly that at some point it will flare up and cause a uti.  This is a dangerous bacteria like the one you have.

Early on in my UTI the urologist took a urine sample via a catheter and it caused the uti to get much worse.  At one point they wanted t o do a cysto, but I managed to avoid that thankfully.  Anytime that put any instrument or needle into you, you risk infection.

Did you not take a probiotic?  I started probiotics as soon as I started antibiotics.  I still take them.  I never had any digestive problem on antibiotics and I took them for a year.  I guess I was lucky.  I did worry about C-Diff.

      Hiya Sam,

I've just come across this post so a bit late chiming in.

When you say that your are down to your last two antibiotics, do you mean the last two common antibiotics that a GP can prescribe? If so when they stop working how about the stronger stuff that can only be administered in hospital, often intravenously?

I admit to not being well clued up on this and am asking because like you, I also self catheterise. On top of that I have an auto immune disease in the form of rheumatoid arthritis so am prone to UTIs and have had sepsis on two occasions.  To make matters worse I need to take meds that lower the immune system to help  control my RA. Obviously not good when you have a bladder condition and prone to UTIs.. Since my last bout of sepsis 2 years ago, I decided to stop all immune suppressing medication, result being that I haven;t had a single UTI since. Trouble is my RA has gone haywire and is causing serious issues so I have recently decided to go back on meds with the obvious risk that entails...talk about being between a rock and a hard place!!

Anyway, after reading about the plight of some folks here, I'm not so sure I've done the right thing by going back on meds, especially as my e. coli bug is resistant to all of the common antibiotics. Hence I'll need to go straight to hospital and put on whatever concoction of IVAs at first signs of an infection.  You and anyone else's thoughts on my predicament will be much appreciated.

Don't know if you saw/heard the news today where NHS England have announced around a third increase in sepsis deaths over the past year or so, can't recall exactly the dates. They reckoned the main reason for the increase is because they are more aware of sepsis so are recording it better. What a load of codswallop! Not saying that hasn't made a difference to the figures, but I reckon the main reason for the increased death rate is down to increased antibiotic resistance, which someone independent medical professional did state later on.  Just what is the NHS's game?!...they must be worried stiff about increasing antibiotic resistance so try to downplay it.

Another thing that really gets to me is the rhetoric coming from this government about getting around the table with the drug companies to discuss researching new antibiotics or some form of replacement. Think I first heard this on the radio well over 2 years ago and ain't heard the outcome of any such meeting since. Call me a sceptic if you want, but I wouldn't be in the least surprised if a meeting has even taken place.

Apologies for my  long rant, Sam, but it's only folks in a similar boat as us that seem get it.
