I have this feeling too. It's not every night, it'll just randomly happen a couple of times some nights. It used to terrify me, until I found that it happened to other anxiety sufferers. It proved to me it's nothing wrong with my heart and is just my anxiety playing up, and now I accept it.

Like dubia27765 said you have to let it 'whoosh' over you. I know it's easier said than done but I promise you just get used to it, and once it doesn't phase us, who knows. It might just disappear.

    Hi Emma,

I had this feeling whilst away on a girls weekend, it lasted all night and everytime I closed my eye that 'whoosing' sensastion would begin. Its hard to explain I know but mine felt like it was starting in my cheset and like a wave towards my head and when it got there I would have to open my eyes. It was horrible so I sympathise completely. I went to a medical practice and they said it was panic attacks.  I havent had that feeling in ages , are you on medication? I am.

Hi,  emma...I'm sure what you have is anxiety, but please ask your doctor about sleep apnea...that is where you actually forget to breath in your sleep or when you are near sleep stage...If you check out, then consider it just anxiety.  I have sleep apnea, so I always sleep with my head on two pillows and on my side, if I can...Hope this helps, sweetie...

I know your message is for Emma, but when I first started getting this symptom I went to the doctors and she asked if I snore. I know snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea, but as soon as I said I don't think I snore she said it absolutely can't be apnea. Does someone HAVE to snore to have sleep apnea?

    Hello, Emma!

I get something like this when I'm having an episode and it makes me dread sleep! It's like I have all these thoughts running through my head so I can't get into a deep sleep, and then, while I'm somewhere in between sleep and consciousness, I stop breathing because when I am awake I do this same thing in response to stress. However, when I do it while I'm half asleep, my body forces me to wake up, but I notice I was holding my breath and that startles me and then my heart flip flops and races and I feel like I need a deep breath. For me, it's like when you get the stomach flu: you're exhausted but you can't sleep because you're suffering all night. I used to get them years ago and all of the sudden they've started again. They're really annoying but not near as terrifying as they were years ago. It might help if your doctor could prescribe something to help you sleep? That helped me. I just needed to sleep deep enough that my anxiety couldn't override my brain.

I think your reacting to anxiety related to sleep. You need to put your mind at ease before you go to sleep.

I feel like this sometimes but I can't seem to open my eyes afterwards and it feel as if my own body is holding them closed without touching them.

A bit of a late reply Emma, just to try to reassure you that it's common & normal to feel certain strange sensations during that time when our bodies are sinking into sleep. Chances are it's something to do with the old fight or flight system playing up a bit. Stresses and buried emotions manifest themselves at the most inconvenient times...and it's so often when we're trying to relax and sleep! Weird & very real sensations (and sounds) are also much more noticeable to us when we're in that pre-sleep state. We're all quiet. Just lying there trying to sleep. I know. I've had them for years! They can be scary...and very annoying. I just try to use the logical part of my head to explain them away and reassure myself..."it's just part of being a sensitive human!" So try not to let them get you down and do explore the various (healthy!) ways to unwind & relax.

This is exactly why I am awake right now! I googled it to see if other people feel the same thing A big swoosh comes over me from my heart on up and freaks me out! If its from anxiety these feelings sure are not going to help it any! Sorry you guys are experiencing this too but glad I'm not alone!
