Will fluoxetine work for me again?

Posted , 22 users are following.

I was on fluoxetine before for a few years and it worked well. I came off of it like a year and a half ago and only recently decided to go back on it again. I have been on it for just over 3 weeks so far and it's not helping me at all yet. I'm getting worried that maybe it won't work this time around. When i started it 3 weeks ago i would get waves of feeling normal which lasted only a few minutes but now i'm just feeling indifferent and have been for the last two weeks.

It was lovely to hear from you, however I am sad to think you are still struggling, after my dose was increased to 40mg I had the awful side effects first, and after several weeks I slowly started to feel better, its 20 weeks since starting the fluoxetine, and like you I had used it before, it took a long time, but I am back to my old happy self again, sleeping eating and enjoying life, I never gave up the fight, and tried to think positive.

I have had several other health issues but I have felt strong enough to tackle them, I was diagnosed with a stage one prolapse, saw a gynocologist he said nothing needs to be done at the moment, just using oestogen cream at the moment, and I have a trapped nerve in my hip and my thigh is numb with pins and needles and very painful, I am waiting to have physio the Doctor has assured me it will get better.

Please keep in touch, I kept thinking about you, and hoped things had improved X

I have a psychiatrist appointment tomorrow. I am going to try out CBT along with the medication to try speed up my recovery. Also going to be exercising more as well. It took a really long time for the meds to work the first time around and katecogs said it takes even longer the second time around so i definitely still have faith. Patience is a virtue in times like this.

I am glad you are feeling strong enough to fight your health problems. I have full belief in you that you will get through them too just as you got through the depression.

I am so pleased to hear from you, just wish you were feeling better.

That's a good idea, and then I am certain you will get better, do you get good days and not so good, I found that hard to cope with, one day thinking I am getting better then back down with a bang, but I never gave up hope.

Its good you are feeling positive, as I think it really helps, its hard but I kept saying you will get better and I did, it was like going to hell and back.

When I spoke with my GP I said I don't want to reduce or come off the fluoxetine I want to be on this dose for at least another six months, and then I want to stay on a lower dose, he agreed he said tell me when you feel ready to reduce the dose, so I will be taking them for ever, could go through that again.

Let me know how you get on after tomorrow.X

My psychiatrist has increased my dosage to 60mg. Hopefully i will do better on this dose. He is also going to get me to see a psychologist and then hopefully i can do some cbt as well. They are also going to do some blood tests on me tomorrow to see if there is any deficiency. The journey to recovery really is long and hard but i believe i can get there in the end.

Yes i think it's good for you to stay on fluoxetine as it seems to be working well for you now!

I am pleased for you, at least they are prepared to try a stronger dose, everyone is different, some manage with a small dose and some need a stronger dose like yourself, I think it is better to increase the dose than change the meds, I am sure in a few weeks you will be telling me you are feeling better, stay on a low dose for ever, as no one wants to be in that dark place again me or you.

I am always hear to support you, and cant wait to hear that you are back to your self again and enjoying life.

It is such a frightening thing to have, as your brain reacts in a different way, and I didnt feel positive to do anything much, and that black hole feeling is just horrid.

But you will get there, once the higher dose kicks in, give it a few weeks, bless you I think about you a lot, you are so young and need lots of support around you.x

Coming on here talking to people like you has really helped me a lot and i am very grateful for it. I got my bloods done today to see if i have any deficiencies or anything but i don't think i do. It is a very frightening thing to have. I find that i can't even concentrate on tv for long so it is hard to pass time. Hopefully i will be feeling better in a few weeks.

I am sure u will take a turn on that dose. If not there is always other options. We have to keep fighting this until we get better. I am very down at the minute too and find it hard to concentrate on anything so passing time is hard too but i am still hopeful.

its crazy isnt it . i know exactly how you feel which dosent help at all i know . there is no way i can live like this cause its not living so fighting through is the only option .

Having to work at a stressful challenging job makes things a little more challenging .

have you had any good spells?? where are you at on total again ?

Its good you have had the blood tests, me too, but mine all came back ok, even the B12, the B12 can affect the mental health of a person, and my full blood count was good, I really thought this may have caused my depression, but obviously not, I was pleased when all was well.

I hope your blood test come back all ok also, I am sure they will.

How are you getting on with the stronger dose, it will take at least two weeks for you to feel any benefit, you will get there keep fighting, last time when you got better did you feel ok all of the time, I did and I feel pretty good now, been grocery shopping today, its lovely to just get out, feel I want to go out everyday now.

I hope you can at least enjoy your weekend, thinking of you . Annx

You will get there, keep positive and say to yourself I will get better, thats what I did, with the backing of my Husband, I got through this dreadful black hole feeling with negative thought's, and the low mood with no interest was the worst, and the side effects.

I am pleased to say my life is pretty much back to normal, and I feel good and happy, and enjoying life again, it was a very long slow journey but I made it, and so can you, just keep persevering with the higher dose, and if that doesnt help ask for a stronger dose, you can always reduce the dose after six months of feeling better, but swopping and changing meds is not a good idea, getting the dose correct fore each person is far more important.

      Take care and think better.

I've been on fluoxetine for like 5 months but only just went up to 60mg a few days ago. Yes i have had times where i felt normalish and so far on this new dose i am feeling okay so thats a good sign. You're right, this isn't living but we will appreciate life much more once we come out the other end.

I think i am on the highest dose of fluoxetine right now. I am glad your life is back to normal and you feel happy. I hope to achieve that as well but it is a struggle. I know i can get there though. And yeah i am not going to swap meds i am goingto stick with fluoxetine until it works.

      good to hear !

i am 1 month on 40 mg and 5 months total , and im not even close to feeling well . its just a waiting game and a challenge to live and function every day .

i so want the motivation back and no anxiety .

Did your blood tests come back ok.?

Its very strange because I cant really describe the point that I felt better, it was a slow process, but suddenly I was able to sleep without thinking about everything, then I got to enjoying my meals, small amounts to start, and then the stress and more positive thinking happened, the cloud lifted and the low mood went, I did'nt have the anxiety so bad and then that went, then I had positive thoughts, and could enjoy my home again, without the support from my Husband and the understanding this helped me a lot, the worst thing is someone saying try to get better, thats not how depression works.

You will get there, you will start to feel a little better each day, and then you will feel good again. I have been on the fluoxetine for 21 weeks and 17 on the higher dose, this time I am going to keep taking them for a year from when I felt better, and then remain on 20mg.

Hope you are feeling a little better, it does take at least two weeks for the higher dose to start to work.X

no worries . needed some positive reinforcement today anyways . A day filled with anxiety

Have you had your blood test results back, if so how were they, any problems.

The new dose will take a couple of weeks before the drug is in your system, hopefully you will start to feel better, I look forward to the day when you say you are starting to feel good x

I do hope you start to feel better soon, this illness is the worst thing ever, try to think positive, its hard but you need to convince yourself that you will get better, its only people like us that has experienced this that completely understand what its like, anyone who has'nt had depression dont know what it does to our heads, its a dreadful feeling.

You will get better but everyone recovers at different times, once I was put onto the higher dose it took several weeks before I felt anything like better.

But I am good now, having a low immune system you have to keep away from the coronavirus, I started to enjoy going out but its frightening with this virus, cant afford to get that.

Take care and I hope you soon feel better, if not you may need a even higher dose, keep taking the fluoxetine dont change meds.

Sorry i took so long to answer. yes i got my bloods back. My cholesterol is slightly high but overall everything is good. Also i think this higher dose of medication is working better for me but i am not better yet.

    • Edited

Oh its good your bloods were ok, I take a tablet for cholesterol and it keeps mine stable.

I am glad that you think the higher dose is working for you, just give it time to get into your system, you will find one day you will feel completely different, it will happen for you, do you have the low mood still and no interest in anything, that will change and you will forget what it felt like, its strange because I cant imagine feeling like it now, you will be like that too.x

I am so sorry to hear that, what a pity, but it may take a while on the stronger dose to kick in, you maybe feel worst before you feel better, fingers crossed you will soon be on the mend.

No set backs, feeling my self again, its the most amazing feeling and I am thankful I stuck it out, I have a bit of concern about the corona virus, but we are sticking and abiding by the rules, it will be nice to go outside again without the fear of catching it.

Hey im sorry for not messaging sooner i am still in a really bad place but i think it could be alcohol that was stopping my meds from working so i am off alcohol to see if that will help. Hope everything is good with you?

i know this is an old post but i dunno what to do. i am 9 weeks in and week 3-4 made me really suicidal. i pushed through like everyone said n had a good couple of weeks. improved anxiety and no more depression. then a couple of weeks ago i started having a really low mood. ive never felt like this before. i don't enjoy anything. dont want to do anything and just have a really negative outlook. even when i was anxious before these tablets i was still very positive person. did any of you improve or did the tablets not work for you. i dony know if this is normal and i am just reacting badly to them and newd to switch or if you guys felt the same and did improve. anyones reply would be highly appreciated
