Will my eyes ever improve

Posted , 21 users are following.

I have had this problem for several weeks and it has got worse not better. The hospital suggested blepharitis and I have been faithfully following the cleaning regime but these are the symptoms. It started with constantly watering eyes, now my eyelids and lowerlids are sore and swollen (looks awful), slightly itching and slightly sticky in the morning but only recently. Is this blepharitis as the nurse suggested and will the symptoms improve or do I have to put up with them as it is a chronic condition so I am told?

    Hi Jo,

It could be blepharitis but also sounds like it could be an allergic reaction to something?  Have you started using a new cream/makeup/washing powder?  The fact that your eyes are sticky suggests that you may well have an infection, now.  Things shouldn't be getting worse if you're using the right treatment so I'd go back to the doctor's if I were you.  My eyes went from bad to worse because I listened to the first consultant I saw who said I'd just have to put up with the symptoms as it's a chronic condition.  I'm sure allergies started the problem but my eyes became more susceptible to infection because my immune system was compromised.  Ask for a second opinion, Jo.

I am getting down about this now. Sore and swollen eyelids, big lines and bags under my eyes with sort of red stripes of sores. Tried wet ones, baby shampoo, heat pads the Opatanot drops and non preservative lubricator s, heat pads massage and boiled water and bicarb Nothing is improving, today it's worse, what on earth can I do?

Hi Jo, Sorry to hear there is no improvement.  Two things it does unfortunately take time to see and improvement, I know only too well.

Each time I have a flare up it takes about 2 weeks and increased regime to see it improving.  Second what do you mean by red lines of sores? I think you should go back to GP and ask again to be referred to opthalmologist again or maybe dermatology dept.  Sorry I can't be more helpful.  I do know how you feel.  Perhaps someone else on the forum can offer some advice.  Carol

Hi Jo. I think you def need to go back to your doctor. You need to get control of this. And once you find what works for you it won't be so upsetting when you get a flare up.

I think you need an antibiotic or steroid drop to help get it under control and then the cleaning and lubricant regime might keep things under control.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Jo, I feel your pain!  I wonder if you're maybe doing too much at one time?  I've often done the same when bombarded by great ideas and not sure which to do first.  Chemicals can sometimes react against each other or you may have allergies to something you're using.  I really urge you to get to the Doctor's so that they can give you something to calm your eyes and you can ask if you can have allergy tests/be referred to a specialist.  I used baby shampoo for a long time & it turned out that I have a strong allergic reaction to parfum - contained in baby shampoo!  What are you using to cleanse your face/moisturise?  Could this be adding even more chemicals into the mix?

    Hi Jo,

Just occurred to me do you have skin problems facial or scalp.  I just wonder because I in the past have had seborrehic (wrong spelling) dermatitis and rosacea both of which can effect the eyes.  Rosacea in particular can affect just the eyes, just the face or both.  My face cleared up after menopause but I had no eye problems to speak of at this time.  Rosacea in more common in females especially fair skins.  It is often called the celtic curse.  Some thing to consider.

Sorry can't be more helpful.  Carol

Just back from 4 hours in the eye hospital and have been told to desist all treatment except Vaseline on my eyelids. It seems that I have formed an allergy to something I have been using to treat the blepharitis and it isn't the cause of this swelling or (what I can only describe as) welts on the eyelids. Thank you all for your kind support.

Poor you hope they find out what it is you are allergic to quickly.

Let us all know how it goes.

    Dear All

i am very relieved to tell you that after weeks of weeping, sore, swollen, baggy eyes that after two days of stopping all treatment bar the non preservative pretend tears ( dispose after 12 hours) and petroleum jelly, I am completely back to normal. It seems I was allergic to just about everything and the Eye Doctor at the hospital told. me to stop, even the heat pad. Blepharitis is there but apparently controlled. Got to go back in three weeks. You did suggest haircrazylady that it may be allergies and I was doing too much and indeed it seems you were right.

thank you all so much for all your kind support and advice. It so helped when I was feelin horrible.

best wishes to everyone and I hope I can support other.

one, very relieved, returning to mascara soon, Jo x

Hi Jo,  so glad you are back to normal.  What a relief it must be for you.

As they say the blepharitis is controlled what regime have they given you to do.  My must say that although many people love the pad which you microwave did not suit me I found it too heavy on the lids and made they dry and sure.  Lovely you can start using mascara again.  I gave up eye make up a few years a go but do not give up the idea of being able to use it again one day even if just for special occasions.

      All the best Carol

    Hi Jo,

I have been suffering with exactly the same symptoms as you for 2 years!! And the hospital have never even suggested it could be blepharitis. Just keep palming me off with 'allergic conjuctivitus' or 'sever dry eye' & I've been prescribed a concoction of 4 different steroids, 3 different lubricating drop and various ointments in 2 years sad But I'm so glad I came across your post as I am.going to put it to the hospital if it could be what you have & see where I get with that smile

Hello Jo. I'm afraid blepharitis is a chronic condition, so you need to keep up with your good work.  However, it sounds like you now have new symptoms of a mucky discharge and itchy eyes.  This is indicative of conjunctivitis.  You can buy over the counter chloramphenicol eye drops from a pharmacy.  These will only work if it is infective conjunctivitis (and not viral conjunctivitis, which is when you have a cold at the same time).  If your lids are also inflammed, it may be you need a steroid eye drop (such as 0.1% dexametasone drops) but I would see your GP for this.  You could also go to an Eye Casualty if you have one nearby, as they have a slit lamp to properly view the eyes.  Good luck!
