Will my eyes ever improve

Posted , 21 users are following.

I have had this problem for several weeks and it has got worse not better. The hospital suggested blepharitis and I have been faithfully following the cleaning regime but these are the symptoms. It started with constantly watering eyes, now my eyelids and lowerlids are sore and swollen (looks awful), slightly itching and slightly sticky in the morning but only recently. Is this blepharitis as the nurse suggested and will the symptoms improve or do I have to put up with them as it is a chronic condition so I am told?

I have had blepharitis for over a year and tried all the recommended treatment, i.e. cleaning regime, which I follow constantly, and various wipes.  After several visits to my GP I was prescribed 0.5% hydrocortisone cream, which I use sparingly when the condition recurs and it clears up within a day or two.  I couldn't live without it!!

i have been ocular roscea, my eye doctor said this is the same thing as blephritis there are two type  interor and exterior, no eye makeup forever for life. I had also lost my eyelashes. There is no cure for this condition it can only be kept at bay by daily warm compresses ( bought a sinus buddy at drugstore) Use eye drops twice a day restasis. Also washing the eyelids daily with baby shampoo on a q-tip or tea tree shampoo.  I have had relapses where my eye get very blooshot i am on doxcyline for life..5 weeks on 5 weeks off. From a womens view this is awful to see the mascara commercials and wear no eye makeup it will make it worse. I as surprised to hear my surgeon tell me that blephartis is the same thing as Ocular roscea.

Hi Firstly I would like to say I know how you feel and not being able to wear eye makeup even for special occasions is not nice as you say from a womans point of view.

I have had bleparitis and dry eyes for many years I am now 68.  I suffered from facial roscea since my twenties as do both of my daughters.  I was always very self conscious of  my face and did have to resort to antibiotics on one or two occasions.  Up to my 40's I had no trouble with my eyes at all.  The blepharitis started really in my 40's slowly at first.  Both my face and eyes were really bad going through the menopause.  Now although I still suffer with my eyes my face has really calmed down compared to what is was and I don't need any treatment.  Obviously hormonal.  When you say that your surgeon tells you blepharitis and ocular rosacea are the same I think he might mean the symptoms.  Many people have facial rosacea without the eye problems some have eye problems without the face and some unluckily both.  I suppose where there is just blepharitis and no other facial problem then just refer to it as bleph.  The interior type which is the one I have involved the oil glands which bock hence the warm compresses but I think you probably know that.   I am sorry about you losing your eyelashes are they growing back or is it permanent? Like you I use the hot compresses and clean the eye lash area also massaging in the glands after the compresses.  The only think I do different is that whilst I used to use baby shampoo I now use bicarbonate of soda about a quarter of a teaspoon dissolved in boiled cooled water.  As you say you have to keep on top of it everyday.  I have just had a relapse manly because I was away staying with family and my routine got a bit slapdash.

Hello Kitty  I can hear that you are very frustrated with your eyes.  Most of us on this forum know how you feel. I have suffered from blepharitis for many years and it is a long term condition you just have to keep it under control.  With regard to eye makeup some can when their eyes are good many can't or feel it is not worth the flare up that it may cause.  Some recommend disposable mascara wands.  I don't know anything about contact lenses though.  Others on here may be able to advise you.

Now have you actually had a diagnosis and what treatment has your doctor given.  Maybe you need to see an opthalmologist.  Do get back to me if you have any questions.  I know how you feel about makeup I have not used eye make up for a few years and even at 68 years of age I hate that I can't use eye make up for special occasions, sort of feel the eye make up completes the look, but it is better than suffering afterwards.  If you have dry eyes there are many lubricants you can buy or your gp can prescribe.  Good luck.

Dear libralady13, thanks so much dear. I feel bad cos of myself right now while m 23years with moderate myopia. Since my eyes is not yet stable, so I cannot perform LASIK. I really love me up and at least I want to do it occasionally. I visited Dr. 2times about this. He told my eyes is almost ok maybe next week. I can wear any make up just make sure nothing go into my eyes. He is not sure about contact lenses maybe solution can make problem, but that solution, I never use new brand. I used it for 5years. Not, a new bottle also. 3years wearing CL everyday without problem. But this bottle I over time use it. 2days after latest wearing that it start itch. So, I hate how I look without any make up with glasses. :'( I just wish to do it occasionally. My eyes Dr just told me I have eyelid inflamed, m not sure what kind of Blepharirist. He didn't said I have dry eye, but I feel it since I start eye strain. He gave me TelFast pills, Maxitrol, and Opticorn eyedrops.

I have used opticrom eye drops some years ago.  That's when they thought I might have an allergy I am talking about when in my 30's.  It was quite good if I remember.

There are 2 types of blepharitis Anterier and posterier.  In the posterier the oil glands are involved and become blocked.  Both types can be acute or chronic.  With chronic posterier type you usually need a daily regime of heating the oil glands to soften either with a eye bag which you can heat up in a microwave or using a hot flannal followed by massage and thorough cleaning of the eyelid especially around the eye lashes, often with a solution of boiled water with either drop of baby shampoo or as I do bicarbonate of soda.  If it is bad it does take a few weeks to see an improvement.  Then you do the regime daily to keep it under control.

The other type I think is just the eyelids and eye lashes becoming red itchy and dandruff type scales which you have to clean off carefully.  The gp sometimes prescribes antibiotics.  I cannot say how long it will take for your eyes to improve.  I am not sure where you live but I often forget that in the uk we thankfully have the NHS and can be referred to eye hospital if necessary.  Do read up about blepharitis on line.  If you are going to try and use makeup for your cousins wedding.  I would advise if possible that you buy new eyemake especially mascara and make sure they are allergy free type and remove it thoroughly.  I expect you aleady know this.  If the doctor has not prescribed any lubricant drops and you think your eyes are dry you can buy artificial tears at the chemist.  They won't do any harm but might make you fell more comfortable.  Preservative free ones might be better but I realise they may be more expensive.

From what the doctor has given you looks like he/she thinks it is an allergy or something.  Do you have any other symptoms like sneezing and nose problems or does your face go red easily.  Just wondered as it could be related to rhinitis with nose symptoms or rosacea which cause facial blushing and can affects the eyes.  I have rhinitis and rosacea although not too bad as well the belpharitis.  So a lot to consider.  Anyway I hope it is just a one of thing and that you will soon

be back to normal able to wear eye make up etc.  Hope the wedding goes well.

I never have allergy with s.th before, but I sometime have skin problems since I was 11. It similar to Tinea, eczema or drematitis. Some rashes with little fliud on my fingers when I was dish or clothes often. But, this problem is not serious as before now. It just come some time and little like some skin near fingers peel off. Recently, I feel so weak and often caught flu as well as itch skin too.

I'm sorry you are not feeling well.  Flu is horrrible and will make your immune system low which might have not helped with the eye problem.

If you have suffered from some type of dermatitis then that might affect your eyes, I don't really know though.  One last thought hope you don't mind me asking do you suffer from dandruff at all. I used to have seborrheic dermatitis which caused dandruff and sore red scaly eyebrows it was cleared up with a shampoo recommended by a dermatologist.  Hope you soon feel better.

Take Omega - 3 Fatty Acid rich food. You can go for supplements of 1 to 3 g, two to three times a day. You can apply heat in the form of warm saltwater soaks.
