Will my eyes ever improve
Posted , 21 users are following.
I have had this problem for several weeks and it has got worse not better. The hospital suggested blepharitis and I have been faithfully following the cleaning regime but these are the symptoms. It started with constantly watering eyes, now my eyelids and lowerlids are sore and swollen (looks awful), slightly itching and slightly sticky in the morning but only recently. Is this blepharitis as the nurse suggested and will the symptoms improve or do I have to put up with them as it is a chronic condition so I am told?

I have had bleparitis and dry eyes for many years I am now 68. I suffered from facial roscea since my twenties as do both of my daughters. I was always very self conscious of my face and did have to resort to antibiotics on one or two occasions. Up to my 40's I had no trouble with my eyes at all. The blepharitis started really in my 40's slowly at first. Both my face and eyes were really bad going through the menopause. Now although I still suffer with my eyes my face has really calmed down compared to what is was and I don't need any treatment. Obviously hormonal. When you say that your surgeon tells you blepharitis and ocular rosacea are the same I think he might mean the symptoms. Many people have facial rosacea without the eye problems some have eye problems without the face and some unluckily both. I suppose where there is just blepharitis and no other facial problem then just refer to it as bleph. The interior type which is the one I have involved the oil glands which bock hence the warm compresses but I think you probably know that. I am sorry about you losing your eyelashes are they growing back or is it permanent? Like you I use the hot compresses and clean the eye lash area also massaging in the glands after the compresses. The only think I do different is that whilst I used to use baby shampoo I now use bicarbonate of soda about a quarter of a teaspoon dissolved in boiled cooled water. As you say you have to keep on top of it everyday. I have just had a relapse manly because I was away staying with family and my routine got a bit slapdash.

Now have you actually had a diagnosis and what treatment has your doctor given. Maybe you need to see an opthalmologist. Do get back to me if you have any questions. I know how you feel about makeup I have not used eye make up for a few years and even at 68 years of age I hate that I can't use eye make up for special occasions, sort of feel the eye make up completes the look, but it is better than suffering afterwards. If you have dry eyes there are many lubricants you can buy or your gp can prescribe. Good luck.

There are 2 types of blepharitis Anterier and posterier. In the posterier the oil glands are involved and become blocked. Both types can be acute or chronic. With chronic posterier type you usually need a daily regime of heating the oil glands to soften either with a eye bag which you can heat up in a microwave or using a hot flannal followed by massage and thorough cleaning of the eyelid especially around the eye lashes, often with a solution of boiled water with either drop of baby shampoo or as I do bicarbonate of soda. If it is bad it does take a few weeks to see an improvement. Then you do the regime daily to keep it under control.
The other type I think is just the eyelids and eye lashes becoming red itchy and dandruff type scales which you have to clean off carefully. The gp sometimes prescribes antibiotics. I cannot say how long it will take for your eyes to improve. I am not sure where you live but I often forget that in the uk we thankfully have the NHS and can be referred to eye hospital if necessary. Do read up about blepharitis on line. If you are going to try and use makeup for your cousins wedding. I would advise if possible that you buy new eyemake especially mascara and make sure they are allergy free type and remove it thoroughly. I expect you aleady know this. If the doctor has not prescribed any lubricant drops and you think your eyes are dry you can buy artificial tears at the chemist. They won't do any harm but might make you fell more comfortable. Preservative free ones might be better but I realise they may be more expensive.
From what the doctor has given you looks like he/she thinks it is an allergy or something. Do you have any other symptoms like sneezing and nose problems or does your face go red easily. Just wondered as it could be related to rhinitis with nose symptoms or rosacea which cause facial blushing and can affects the eyes. I have rhinitis and rosacea although not too bad as well the belpharitis. So a lot to consider. Anyway I hope it is just a one of thing and that you will soon
be back to normal able to wear eye make up etc. Hope the wedding goes well.

If you have suffered from some type of dermatitis then that might affect your eyes, I don't really know though. One last thought hope you don't mind me asking do you suffer from dandruff at all. I used to have seborrheic dermatitis which caused dandruff and sore red scaly eyebrows it was cleared up with a shampoo recommended by a dermatologist. Hope you soon feel better.
