Breath smells like faeces (Poo)

Posted , 379 users are following.

I have this horrid poo smell from my mouth. I brush my teeth twice a day, floss, use Dentyl PH mouthwash, I have the best oral hygeine of anyone I know but I still have this smell. I am too embarrassed to even ask my flriends or family to tell me my breath stinks. I am becoming totally reclusive because of it. Id rather go to my GP and tell him ive got an STD. I know ive got it coz sometimes people look around and ask if ive farted, and I see people with babies smelling their nappies when I speak. It really is starting to badly affect my life but I just cant pluck up the courage ot go to my GP. How on earht can i ay \"DR, My breath smells like poo!\" Please, if anyone has any tips let me know.

Intestinal worms may also be the issue because is can cause an odor from your stomach. Hope this helps everyone

    Hi Guys.

First stop is your dentist and then your hygienist. I'm not just saying this because i am a dentist, but it is a well know fact that the most common cause of bad breath is periodontal disease (gum disease) or some other infection in your mouth. You may have what you believe to be excellent oral hygiene, but if you're not seeing a dentist and/or dental hygienist regularly then problems can build up that you cannot solve yourself.

Yes, problems elsewhere in the body can cause this problem, but as with most things, the simplest explanation is usually correct, so i would definitely get any problems in the mouth ruled out by a dental professional before exploring any more specialist problems.

Lee6161, your doctor is right to send you to your dentist, your dentist is wrong to send you back. If he feels he cannot deal with this problem, there are plenty of places he can refer you to such as "fresh breath" clinics or oral medicine departments at your local hospital.

    Hope this helps.

Hi DentistWill, I went to my dentist this morning to check for my halitosis issue. And she told me that I have great hygene. She even tried to use a floss and found nothing. She looked at my gums and nothing. She looked at my tongue and she did want me to go see a specialist for that. But I am already going to go see a GI doctor, I am trying to do a check off list and see if I finally reach the answer.  After the GI if he finds nothing I will go to the ear, nose, and throat doctor. Honestly I am going crazy trying to figure where that horrible smell is coming from. I can smell it when I talk to people. It is so bad that is spreads in whatever area I am in.

You have more bad bacteria than good bacteria in your mouth causing all sorts of smell depending on what you've eaten. Take a oral probiotic morning and before bed. Open capsule and put on tongue swivel all inside mouth and don't swallow, drink or eat for 1/2 hour in morning. The longer probiotic is in mouth the more it will overpower the bad smelly germs and get your mouth balanced to no smell at all. Depending on how bad your breath this can take time but at least each day breath will be better than day before. I like probiotics for dental health better than the gut ones so you will have to order online. Meanwhile use the gut ones at whole foods. GoodLuck.

Hi, my son is 7 and has suffered chronic constipation from about 2 and a half yrs of age. He is on a daily dose of Osmolax and it seems to work for him but his breath constantly smells like poo. If we miss a dose or accidentally double dose him it has devastating results for days. I want to fix it before he is teased at school.. I've read your messages and some of the messages that have replied... he doesn't really eat red meat in the sence of a steak. He eats soups, spaghetti, sausages, he does eat processed foods and is a real shitty eater. He was a real skinny kid but as we beat the constipation he started to eat ham sandwiches and has put on weight over the years. He is the tallest in his class and is 134.6 cm and 43 kg. Which is about the size of a 9 year old.  He has been seeing dr's his whole life and only 2 weeks ago, his dr ordered blood test including blood count, inflammatory markers, screen testing for autoimmune conditions including ANF, rheumatoid factor and ENA .. renal and liver function test a urinalysis and thyroid function test and thyroid antibodies... All of which came back normal. He also was allergy tested and he has no reaction to food or inhaled allergens.. He is heavy but otherwise very healthy. The smell is obviously his constipation and we have battled years with this... Does anyone have any help or recommendations for my boy..

He is young but you might want to try enemas which is only a temporary fix....Colonics seem to offer me temporary relief.

have you tried metamucil? this is a powder fiber that you put in a cup of water and drink at least 3 times a day. This does make you go poop but it also scrapes the intestinal walls (cleaning purpose). You can also try to do probiotics with him as well. I heard this helps with stomach issues.

Sorry, just to add to what I,ve already written.. He has no dental issues. He had his tonsils and adenoids out when he was about 4, and he is on to his third set of grommets.. And worms, as we have a cat and dog that are like his best friends we regular treat him and the pets (plus his older brother).

Have you looked into your diet. It may be that you are not getting on with certain food which may be putrifying in the stomach.

I have had this problem as long as I can remember (I'm now 40). I have tried everything and had given up on these forums for years now. Started searching again tonight incase there happened to be a miracle cure now but it just seems to be the same old suggestions. I even went to the extremes of getting my tonsils removed (made no difference). I'm happily married and don't know how my husband puts up with it.  I'm desperate to find a cure! I've seen doctors, dentists, fresh breath clinics, I eat well, drink lots of water, I am not constipated or have problems with digestion. My dentist always praises my oral hygiene. I'm at a loss. I haven't tried therabreath, could this be the answer? There seems to be a few different ones? Any particular one work the best? Help please.

Is this the same thing as worms? Seen a few comments about that.

have you tried to take probiotic for your issue? went to the GI doctor?

      Hi Paulette

I have tried pro biotics. I've tried everything really. I've had this problem since I was a child, I think it's genetic, my sister has the same problem. I am currently making milk kefir after reading a book suggested on this discussion forum. I have been drinking it for a couple of months now but last week I was at a playgroup with my baby and mums kept sniffing their babies nappies when I was talking to them so I know the kefir hasn't helped yet. It's actually making me really mucusy.

I haven't been to a gi doctor, I've never even heard of one. My next thing will be fermented vegetables and kombucha.

A GI doctor is a doctor that specializes in stomach and intestinal issues. They are gastroentorologists. I have some serious halitosis since I found out that I had Gerd, another form of acid reflux. Due to the acid reflux it also produced HPylori which is a bacteria that grows in your intestines. The gastro doctor can help you with stomach issues. Now if you went to them already you should check into the Candida diet. I have heard of this issue as well. Sometimes our bodies do an over load of different bacterias in our bodies and it begins to mess our bodies up. Let me know what you think. I am rooting for you, root for me too :-) I sure need it!

      Hi Paulette and Loobs,

I completely agree with the bacterial overload. Bacterial is a living thing, and every living thing must eat. And whatever eats also grows...and then poops. We need to mount an all out assault on the bacteria to solve the problem.

I've spent over a decade sourcing the problem; trying to find the root of this massive tree to which to lay the axe, and I think I've finally done that and want as many people to know about it as possible.

So without spamming my first post in this discussion, I'd like you (including Loob, guest, and anyone else following this discussion) to check out my reply to mike666 in his discussion:

      https://patient.info/forums/discuss/bad-breath-reflux-pnd-infection-something-else--259384?order=latest+#topic-replies

Suffice it to say, Loob I think your milk kefir is exasperating your problem significantly...but let me know what you think about my research and solution, in this discussion; and whether you disagree with it or would like more detail.

      All the best!

I agree that this is genetic as well. My mother had it, she said her mother had it, I have it, and I notice that my children have it too. It seems to only get worse with age. I brush and floss and see my dentist twice a year. I don't have any of the other issues listed above either. I really think it's hereditary, in this case anyway. sad

I am about to have my tonsil remove. I'm disappointed that removing the tonsil did not cure the problem. Your post was 11 months ago. I hope u can reply to me before I decide to have my tonsil remove.

Did you have tonsil stones? Therabreath did not work for me. I tried all thier products. Smart mouth mouthwash help a few hrs.

Hi mj, I never seen any tonsil stones even though I had read about them. I was very prone to getting tonsilitis and sore throats and was convinced that my tonsils were the cause of my bad breath. I've suffered bad breath since I was a child and can always remember people asking me if I had passed wind, even as a child. I managed to convince the ENT consultant to remove my tonsils on the nhs so the operation didn't cost me anything even though I was prepared to pay for it

I was so disappointed that it didn't work for me as it is very extreme thing to do and more painful when an adult. I was in my early 30's when I got the op. I'm now 41.

I think that people on this forum have poo breath for different reasons. There are definately people who sound the same as me, I believe it is hereditary as my sister has it too. She doesn't care though. I am the one who has spent over 20 years trying to find a cure and has spent a fortune on products and clinics. She just accepts it. I wish I could just accept it but it's hard. I can be ok until my son asks me if I farted or my niece tells me I stink. Kids are the only ones who are honest and are a true measure for finding out if your breath smells.

Don't be put off getting your tonsils removed as it may work for you, I don't regret it as I would always be thinking it was causing my bb if I hadn't got them removed.

The only relief I get from bb is by sucking chewable vit c tablets, high strength ones. God knows what it's doing to my body but I think it helps while you suck them. I have about 6 a day if I am out with my husband or friends and it makes me feel better. Could be in my head. Good luck with your op. Loobs.

Did you say chewable vitamin c tablet?

I'm 42 single and no boyfriend because of my halitosisis. I'm tired of it. Getting my tonsil stones is my last option.

Dairy products are worse for bad Breath. Spicy foods also.

Have u been to gastroenterologist or seen a periodontitis? I have and was told Evetythinh is normal. Pls tell me what else your doin to prevent bb. Thanks

    • Posted

Hi. Yes chewable vit c, the high dosage. I use 500mg ones from a big well known supermarket here. I suck them and let them melt in my mouth. Somebody on an American forum told me about it years ago and I think it really helps. People think I'm weird carrying bottles of vit c around and eating them like sweets but it's better than smelling. I met my husband a few years ago and I was always chewing vit c when with him so it gave me confidence when dating. Lucky for me he has a poor sense of smell too! I have literally tried everything over the years. My dentist and hygeinist say my mouth is extremely clean, I have never missed an appointment. I have been to ENT, doctors, dental hospital. They all say it doesn't smell! I know it does!! I've been to fresh breath clinic in London, complete waste of money so don't even consider it. I've tried cutting out dairy, detoxes, cutting out sugar and every diet I can think off. I've been tested for halibactor, candida, I drink loads of water, I eat healthy, I'm not overweight, I don't take medication, I don't smoke.

Recently I started making kefir as it is really high in pro biotics but i think the fact it is made with milk didn't help me so I stopped making it.

I really don't think my bb comes from my stomach, I think it's genetic and its just bad luck. I think it's from my mouth because if my mouth is closed the smell doesnt come out my nose. I think I'm just stuck with it. If some doctor could just find a cure they could make a fortune. I know I would pay to cure it! I haven't tried digestive enzymes yet so will try that next.

      Hi Loobs,

Thank you so much for talking to me. It seems like we have a very similar case. All my family have BB except one brother, hes so lucky! My sister is kinda done finding the cure coz nothing help. I do not want to give up, im tired of living alone with no friends and boyfriend because of my BB.

Like you I have a healthy gum, good oral hygine and all. Seen GI doctor and periodontist. Next is to see a ENT doctor. After reading your story, i think I will just go see an ENT to have my tonsil stones remove, if I even have one who knows. I will keep u update after my visit to ENT. Do you know how much it cost to see an ENT?

I just went to the store and bought something to experiment. I will let you know if this will work. I will mak emy own mouthwash: hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and water. That will be my mouthwash. I will try it tomorrow smile

Thank you and please keep in touch!

At the time I paid for a private consultation to see the specialist at ENT and it was around £100. Further appointments and my operation didn't cost me anything as they were through the NHS. do you live in the UK?

No. I'm from the United states. I have a $6000 deductible before my health insurance kicks in sad

Hey mj I suffered for years and have recently had a break through. I went to an ent doc and they diagnosed me with sinus issues. They washed them out 4 weeks ago and I've been douching my nostrils with a mix of half a table spoon of salt and a quarter tea spoon of bicarbonate of soda mixed in a mug of warm water twice a day. The douching can help solve the issue sometimes and is relatively easy and cheap. Hope this helps u

Thank u. I will try that after I'll go see an ENT, thanks again!

i got this done too thinking tonsis were th problem and the surgerey did not help one bit. if u have tonsil stones, i read gargling with myrhh is the best
    • Posted

gargling with what myrhh? I dont know what that is, can you please tell me more about it? Thanks
    • Posted

look it up. its myrhh tincture. i have capsules too. its used for oral health. its even mentioned in the bible. but to b honest this hasnt gave me much result. i suggested it cuz i read online that many people get results from this. ive been rinsing and gargling with water with a few drops of tea tree oil. i just put about 10 drops in a water bottle and leave it by the restroom and use it after brushing my teeth and before bed.
    • Posted

oh im sorry. i thought u were asking about bb. idk if the tea tree oil with help with the tonsil stones. for tonsil stones i read u can try myrhh or grape fruit seed extract. plz look them up. i dont have tonsils so idk how to help that but what i know is that tonsils r a sympton of candida. so fix the candida. the long message i wrote might help u. i think try grgling with salt water several times a day and/or myrhh or grspe fruit seed extract. i read that a mother onced cured for kid from tonsil stones by havng her take pepermint oil capsules before her meals. u can look that up to.

      best

Is the tea tree oil helping? I went to see a ent specialist today. I have no tonsils stone. I dont know what ele to do sad

the ttoil does help a bit. try rinsing a garging with it for a few min
    • Posted

Gargle with tree oil alone after brushing my teeth right?
    • Posted

Yes. a few drops, like 5, in some water. not the oil straight lol

i carry a water bottle the has about 10 drops of tea tree oil with me and swish it around my mouth like 5 min while i drive. i think this helps a bit but idk how much n how long. a dentist told me today its not my mouth but my digestion that's the problem.

    • Posted

Okay thanks. I was reading your previous post and I have a question. So u don't brush your teeth with toothpaste? U brush it with the oil, correct? I'm sorry to be a pain but English is my second language and I don't comprehend ver well 😢
    • Posted

Hi mj. At least you don't need to put yourself through a major operation now. All we can do is keep trying all the suggestions from everybody on here. I can't believe in this day and age when we can cure cancer that we can't even find a cure for chronic bad breath. I feel as if I'm obsessed about my breath. I won't go out unless I have a toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, vitamin c and chewing gum in my bag. My husband can go to bed and not brush his teeth and in the morning his breath doesnt smell!! It's so unfair.

Hi loobs, i was literally cring at the dr office coz I don't know where else the Bb coming from. I'm gonna take the meds. Take enzyme and tea tree oil and on fruits and veggie diet see if this works 😞

      everyone plz read

firs, mj its kk i understand. i just didnt wanna write so much all over again becuse im doing my best to give u all all the info i learned. yes i only brush with oil. i only use toothpaste whe im in a hurry.

Everyone. today i got major relief from gagling with biotene mouthwash while counting to 100 and taking 200 mil of chloriphyll(spelling?) after my meals also i ate raw kale and i think this helped too. ima add it to my everyday diet. im not sure if the chloryphyll is helping. it think it the mouth wash. now things werent perfect but i noticed the reastions i got from people were reduced by at least 50%. it got worse hen i drank juice so avoid sugar n super sweet food

i know may of us think mouthwashes wont work and they didnt used to for me. i think this is now working because of the long time and during my gargling i get a new mouthful of mouthwash every 25-30 seconds. i think the man rinses hels too. many try this with the mouth wash u have a home n see what happens. also, while gargling, make sure to tilt ur head back and stick ur tongue out as far as possible to get the mouthwash to the very back where it is needed.

      good luck guys

I thot biotene is for dry mouth only? So u stop using the tea tree oil?

Did u read someone's post on here about a worm? We might have worm?

Right now I'm taking meds + enzyme + probiotic and gargle with tea tree oil plus only eat apple for fruit and veggies. I'm seeing result so I'm happy. But I'm still curious about the worm, worm must be the problem. I don't know if I have worm and what med to take to flush the worm 😪

Thank you Pixiepez for being patient with me 👊

    • Posted

im glad ur seeing results. i got off track with my diet but u encourage me to follow my vegan diet again. so thank u toosmile

what meds r u taking? and wheat enzyme r u taking too?

i read to get rid of worms u can take one teaspoon of castor oil for one week then increase by one teaspoon each week until ur taking 3 teaspoons. this ought to get rid of them

do stop the tea tree oil since it works. i dont want u buying more products than u have to. but u can try it out if u want. i gave my oil to my friend and i read about the biotene which is why i switched. but ima go buy some tea tree oil today

ENT dr. Prescribed 2 meds because at the back of my nose is very red. I don't think u need to buy the meds unless u have problem with ENT.

I am taking a regular super digestive enzyme bought it at GNC here in the US. I take enzyme and probiotic + ttoil and vegan diet. Today a ate a few berries and the smells came back on instantly 😂. It's frustrating that I cannot eat normal food like other people do. I'm so sick of my BB. Sometimes I wish I'm dead 😢😢

    • Posted

Oh no! I'm not happy to read your post. I feel like I've tried everything but I have not tried the GAPS diet or adding fermented vegetables to my diet. I have to keep trying! I wish you luck too. I've been suffering from this problem form 10+ years too. Good luck to you.

you'll want to commit suicide, if you smell my breath accidentally. i brush two times a day, floss everyday, using expensive sensodyne, 250 dollar electronic toothbrush, my teeths are white and clean as hell. even just 5sec after brush, my breath still smells like poop.

my brother or sis, no hygiene, never brush in the night, didn't flossed in years, never went to the dentist, sometime my bro doesn't even brush in the morning and goes to office without brush, he just drink a coffee, all set. ready for the day, he can kiss anyone in the morning, no prob.

in contrast, if someone talk to me, without i am chewing a listerine tablet, they'll wish for death.

none of gf stayed max 1 month with me, 2 weeks is normal. this is just pathetic, unfair
