CAST IS OFF after medial malleolus stress fracture !! New Kinds of Pain :'( Need HELP

Hey Everyone !

So, my cast was removed yesterday after a stress fracture in the Medial Malleolus ( Inner Ankle Bone). The Removal thing seems exciting but it hasnt been much normal.

I dont know why but the achillies tendon of my left (injured) foot is so stiff ! Like really.

When I do the Plantar Flexion ( Stretching foot down excercise) It hurts so much. Even the Heels give a sweet pain after being pressed. less of the sweet more of the pain.

The injured Leg has become really 'small' , muscles have atrophied. And I cant rotate my ankle still. And Cant walk. Can put Weight. More like dont want to put weight ..even when standing.

So the Doc has told me to use crutches for 10 days and Meet him in 10. He'll tell me to putt off crutches and Then Physiotherapy.

I just want to know about your Experience after Cast removal ..the pain if any.. and returing to walking..running..sports? I was in a cast for like 9 weeks.

Has he given you a boot since the cast came off?

Have you done any part weight bearing or are they expecting to fully weight bear straight away? Are you using crutches or a walker or nothing at all?

    Guys !! UPDATE*****

Im having better range of motion lately but !!

When I move my feet up ..and there is slight weight on the Fibula side of the ankle IT HURTS !

The region around the Fibula...I had broken my medial bone..not the fibula. But after cast removal it is giving some pain.

Please tell me it is normal ? Maybe a joint immobilization due to cast effect ?? Because the fibula "bone" in general doesnt particularly hurts.

    Please Respond

Hi yashmoon, how bad is the pain? Because you will have pain for a while, but if it is serve go have it checked. It could also be the tendons are now being stretched after not being used for a while, and also because your ankle still swells, and this can cause a lot of discomfort. If your leg is elevated does the pain get better. Try and find what causes the pain and work from there. But if it really does not improve don't leave it. Hope this helps.

      Hey !!

This pain occurs when I stretch my feet up really tight or when I Push thr feet above-moderately against a surface.

I feel a stiffening pain around the left side of my left ankle ( Fibular Region ). Like the part doesnt wanna stretch ...i have positive feelings it is not bone related.

And the pain.. it is not over the top. Basically the pain region is just below and near the lateral malleolus ( Outer Ankle bone ). Did you have similar pain ? Whats your suggestion. I goto the doc in 7 days.

Yes I did have similar pain. Try massaging the area. When I came out of my cast after 6 weeks, I was told to walk. First week pwb, then the next week with one crutch and then fwb. I could not even attempt one crutch after pwb because of pain, and at times it felt like my leg was being electrocuted, so I did it at my own pace. Have you been given exercises to do by a physiotherapist? If so do them. It is also important to massage the scars, to break down scar tissue. I use bio oil when doing this. Your physiotherapists should show you how to do this. I must also tell you that while you are recovering some days are better than others. On the bad days do what you can then rest. Listen to your body and do what it tells you. I am now walking unaided and my limp is very slight now. Remember we all heal differently. I am 59 but was always very active and live a healthy lifestyle, and this also makes a huge difference in your recovery. I know a guy that had the same injury and surgery as me, and is also much younger than me, but he smokes, and it took nearly 3 year's for his ankle to heal, so a lot of little things can determine how we recover. Keep me posted on how it goes.

Gosh, I am glad I never smoked, because I got that question so many times from doctors, including the surgeon before operating. Looks like smoking causes many more problems than lung cancer. Never realized it affected bone rejuvenation so much, but sounds like it does, from all my reading on the subject of bone healing through the last 4 months. Learned a lot through this process! Can't help but to walk up to anyone with a boot or knee walker to share stories. We're part of a special club now smile

Haha. I got asked that too. Same as you, non smoker and I'm non drinker, non KFCer. Teehee. My husband had to fill out form for his surgery asking if he was pregnant. 53_year old hairless male!

He saw funny side of it!

Seek medical advice to see whether it is normal. Physio may help or specialist. No pain no gain applies to this type of injury, but a Specialist needs to determine this. I always ask when something happens that frightens me. I'm really nervous about change and new. Hospital , GP and Physio have been a godsend. I wouldn't do exercises set when asked. Mental block. I did however respond to kind words if encouragement with explanations from my patient Physio. Pain got better of me more often than not. And new sensations scared me half to death.

I'm pleased to say in 9th month from snapped displaced fibula, with dislocated ankle. Four plus months post surgery and bone graft plates and screws, there is light at the end of my tunnel. Seek advice from medical team asap, and wait for a green light to proceed.

      All the best!

Yes we are a special club now, and I also ask people with a cast or boot if they broke there ankle and how it happened. My husband gets so mad at me, and thinks I am nosey. But he does not belong to this special club so won't understand.

Some surgeons here refuse to operate if you are smoking, so I read up on it, and it does play a major role with recovery and no union of the bones. So happy I don't smoke or take alcohol. The guy I know that took 3 year's to heal is a heavy smoker and refused to stop and just laughed it off , and said he would recover in his own time.

I think quitting smoking must be like having one bite of an Oreo cookie and leaving it on the counter in front of you all day. Sooner or later you just have to take another bite smile

Haha haha. Luckily my husband does belong in broken bone club. He's the one always asking. The other day we were trying on shoes for our child and lady had a big scar in front of leg 5-6" long starting at ankle. Turns out she snapped fib and tib by just walking. She has a condition she never knew about , her bones are weak and hollow. She can never run again and walking is a danger to her always.

He was doing all the talking. You do that when you're in our club!

I had to ask did you experience your leg shaking uncontrollably when you are sitting and are on toes. I dont know..it is nothing serious right. I swear it didnt happen so heavily before.

      Heyyy !!

Going to Doc on sat.Pain is getting milder. smile

Did you too experience intense limb shaking post cast removal ?

    • Posted

Hi, I am happy the pain is getting better. No my leg didn't shake, only my toes. I am sure this is because the muscles are weak and have not been used for a while, also the nerves. Just carry on with your exercise routine, it will help strengthen the muscles again. Did you get stretching exercises to do? This help me with the toes. When I stretched the toes open, they would shake, but I held them open for as long as I could even though they were shaking. Eventually it went away. Remember we all have different ways of healing, but just push through. I am sure you are going to recover speedily. Please keep us posted. I go to the surgeon on the 22nd and hopefully it will be my last visit to him.

Yes shaking was out of control for me and scary. I was told to gently massage it. It happened after cast came off, even if they put a new one on. Was terrifying having to go for an xray with shaking leg and no cast. They wanted me to do a weight baring xray. I refused. Just as well. I had 100% non union.

Alas the shaking is normal. Link between brain and limb a bit out of Kilta. Seemed my brain couldn't control it.

Try not to focus on that. Take it slowly. I found the shower the worst. Lucky I wasn't in a bubble bath haha. Bubbles would've hit ceiling :+).

4 + months post op, nearly 9 months post snap, my leg does what it told now. Connection back up and running. Glad it is, but running out of the question for me!
