Peri menopause and fatigue

Posted , 40 users are following.

I'm presuming all the symptoms I get are peri menopause, like so many all my bloods, tests etc come back normal. It is soooooooo frustrating, I've changed my diet , had advice on supplements from a nutrition consultant (been taking for nearly 4 weeks), I'm hoping this will help a little soon but the fatigue is killing me, I walk upstairs and have to sit down to recover!!!!!

Everything is an effort, I can't do anything, it's ridiculous. Has anyone conquered the tiredness? Most days I feel like I'm slightly drunk or have a hangover and I haven't had a drink since Xmas, ha!!!!! any advice to get through this misery would be greatfully received. Thanks x

    Caroline,

I am going through all the same s**t.  oops did In say that out loud?  I am 56 feel 106.  It is 3:51 pm and I am shot for the day.  Laying in bed on my back is the only thing that doesn't hurt.  I want to do so many things but I can't.  Nothing is fun any more.  People don't get it.

Have you had an MRI of your brain? I had the same symptoms and thought it was due to peri menopause. It was actually a benign left frontal lobe meningioma (a type of brain tumor, not cancer). I'm 52 and had been on birth control pills for 25 years.  They are very common in middle aged women, are usually benign and some have progesterone and estrogen receptors. I had it removed last June and immediately the fatigue started going away. I got off the pills just before surgery and never went back on them. Now I have a period every other month. So I'm sure one if my ovaries has kicked the bucket. Lol

I am going through the same thing. It's awful! 2015 just came around the corner, my blood pressure went up, fatigue, Brain Fog so bad! a bit of depression. Zero results. from cat scan to xray to 2 blood tests...nothing. I can't even have a glass of wine which i LOVE without feeling like I'm going to fall asleep. Tired all the time. They are saying I'm going through it, but NO hot flashes yet, and I still get my menstraul period and when I do, I feel 100x worse then above. HELP Been thinking about seeing a hormone specialist (natural). I feel like I'm buzzed all the time and so so tired.

I have been to the doctors today, asking about fatigue, mood swings, spots, generally feeling out of sorts to be told I am probably perimenopausal, that would maybe account for the really bad moods, irrationality - and have found just reading the string of comments below more helpful and useful than the trip to the doctors.  Have ordered myself some B6 and will stop beating myself up thinking I was going mad, or senile - memory has certainly been a bit off as well.  So thanks to all the commentsbelow.

Hello, I am new to this site and am finding all of your comments really interesting and helpful.  I think I am peri menopausal.  I am 43 but last month before my period I felt awful, lightheaded, dizzy, felt nauseous, headache, absolutely shattered, angry, happy, teary, you name the mood I had it.  When I started my period I felt a bit better, now a week or so later I keep having the odd day that I feel really lightheaded and nauseous and again shattered.  Do these all sound familiar.  I am taking Citalopram, but I have been on them for a few years.  Have just started taking Menopace, does anyone have any advice.  Oh and occasionally I completely forget words or what I am doing!!!!

Hey Caroline That so rings true with me - knackered all the time, no energy to do stuff at home and things mounting up, which then sparks off the anxiety and linked hot flashes.. my 2 female GPS have refused to refer me. I'm trying lots of vitamins a la jayneejay but no respite yet. I'm about to be investigated at work for my absence levels now but who wants to have this conversation with 2 management men?  I'm trying to get a private appointment so here's hoping she can help.. my first bout with HRT was disasterous: massive weight gain and only flashes sorted out. Was offered AD's next but so far hve refused to take them. I feel like a wee old lady ( only 52) and used to be so fit, sharp and with it. I feel like a dodo now...

      Hello Tashthedash,

I have tried 4 different  types of HRT and have done loads of research I read that the Oestrogel and Utrogestan (because I was peri) these were known as the gold standard HRT. Before this find even with the other HRT's I still seemed to get my health anxiety most months and generally didn't feel that much better. Went to my lovely female GP armed with my find and she kindly prescribed me with this current one and I must say that I am feeling so much like my old self.

This HRT is meant to be the most kindest HRT on the market, better than patches, tablets. It's a gel that you put one pump on one thigh and another pump on the other thigh. The Utrogestan are tablets and I take two of these at night for the last twelve days of my my cycle days 15-26 and then 3 days later you have a small period.

For me the main symptom was health anxiety and some months I could feel myself brewing up about at least two weeks before the period whereas now I haven't had the health anxiety for two months now and I just feel much more level once again.

I have also gone to visit an homeopathic and I have found this really helpful aswell, I don't feel as emotional as I had started to feel before this peri journey had reared its ugly head..  I have always been a worrier but now I am looking at life with a much more confidents and feeling that I like myself a whole lot more.

Good luck with what you end up trying.

      Joy x😘

Hello Caroline! I too have just started experiencing all these same symotoms. ugh sad I have been feeling tired, NO exhausted!  just in the past couple of weeks and yesterday thought I should start researching menopause. Though I don't fall into all catagories (I still have a regular period) I feel I may be peri-menopausal. Your NOT alone girl! ... I have to keep re-reading what I wrote so I don't repeat myself, ugh! I'm still sleeping okay at night, so I wonder, why am I so tired during the day? I used to be the energizer bunny! I could jump out of bed every morning, with as little as 6 hours sleep, then run around all day without ever tireing! It seems to have hit me all of a sudden too! Drunk! Thats a perfect way of putting it! HA! My daughter (12) joked that I was going through menopause sad so I thought I'd look it up. Sadly, that's where I think we might be. I wish I had answers for you girl! I'm here for the same reason.

OMG I'm so happy I just found this, the sheer relief of reading that other people are experiencing the same thing has left me virtually in tears, bit awkward as I am at work. I have been suffering from fatigue and it's destroying me, I feel like I can barely cope any longer. Going to have a proper read through all the replies later and see what is helping the rest of you. :-)

Thank you so much Caroline for starting this thread and to all who I have contributed.  Really helpful.  I had hot sweats for a while, my periods stopped for a while and then started, stopped for months etc.  Luckily for me the hot sweats at night have subsided for now.  The thing that has been worrying me is my memory and fatigue - Sometimes I forget the names of people I work with every day, I forget words when I am in the middle of sentences and I am so tired I just flake out when I get home from work and can't seem to make a decision and put things off when I am there.  I was convinced I was getting Alzehimers.  Maybe I am or maybe it's peri-menapause?   Work is really important to who I am as a person and I am the sole bread winner with teenage kids. With job cuts on the way I find myself being seen as somebody who cant  deliver for the first time in my life and being overtaken by energetic youngsters.  Feeling old and knackered, anxious and at times tearful and very down.

I realise I've just whinged by way of introduction, which wasn't my intention. What I really want to say is that it is a relief to find that maybe all this is perfectly natural and that B suppliments might help.  I've changed to a healthy diet and forced myself to exercise a bit but regularly for the first time ever (as it's supposed to be the best thing for tiredness, irionically). It's made me feel a bit healther but hasn't resulted in me feeling less tired or fuddled.  I am really hopeful about the vitamin B though thanks to the lovely group of women on here.  I'm just a bit confused about B6 and B12 - should I take one or both.  Apologies if that's already been addressed and I havent picked up on it.

I will absolutely try the B vitamins! Thank you for your discussion! I am 51 & have been over my period for several years now. I am so moody, achey, no energy & forget alot. I feel way older than I am. Making hubby crazy. Not as crazy as I feel myself though! I have a ton of stuff to do & just fatigued. I have cleaned houses for a living for 26 yers now & that is just trashing me. Never did before. I am going to the gym 2-3 times a week. I so hope B viamins help! I just have no drive anymore. Thank you all. Tired I am of being tired.

Hi, does anyone have a constant headache and feels sick.  I actually feel like I did the first three months of being pregnant, but am definitely not pregnant.

hi nikki, i don't go a week without a headache and can be constant for 4 days and yes it makes me feel nauseas and i've become sensitive to light.  I know how you feel, these headaches completley ware you out and pull you down.  I suffered with headaches as a teenager and in my twenties so i feel i've gone backwards THERE BACK. What do you take for yours as I find paracetomol don't do anything for them.  I wake up with my headaches and i know i'm going to have it all day.  I've not been on this forum for ages cos of this.  I gave up caffine, cheese & chocolate i bought new pillows i had the lights changed in my office and got a new computer screen so you can't say i'v not tried to help myself.  Do you get pressure in your eyes and nose?  Sorry i have no advice or cure for you but wanted to reply to let you know your not alone in this.  sending you a comforting hug x
