Pleurisy and Chest Infection Clarithromycin

I really hope someone can give me some advice. Before Christmas I came down with a cold which turned into a chest infection. I didnt go to a GP as usually these things clear up. However by Christmas Eve I was starting to feel pretty bad and called the doctor but they were closed so I didn't go. Went on the 27th and was diagonosed with a chest infection and given Amoxicillin. I finished taking these but still felt bad and started to develop a pain under my right breast, almost like a pulled muscle or bruising of the ribs... I asked a doctor and he checked my pulse to rule out a pulmonary embolism???? and said you have pulled a muscle from coughing.... With that I left and carried on taking Ibuprofen which helped ease the pain. The Monday I had a strange incident where my heart was beating really fast and irregular and I felt sweaty, dizzy and couldnt stop shaking. I went home from work and thought about going to the doctors. Plus the pain in my right side was getting worse. I went back to the gp who said I was probably suffering with Pleuritic pain from the infection and he described me more antibiotics.. Amoxiclav...
I still felt bad and he asked me to go back the following Friday to check my blood pressure as it was slightly high.
Finished the Amoxiclav and suddenly felt bad again... nothing I have ever expereienced. Chest Pain, really bad cough, weak sweaty, extremely exhausted...no sense of smell, taste etc... so tired.
I went back again to the gp and broke down in tears as now the middle of January and things seem to be getting worse. He took blood and sent me to the hospital for a chest xray and the blood test he states shows an infection but no blood clot on the lung. The chest xray has also returned clear??? I rarely go the the doctors but he almost made me feel like a hyperchondriac...
He prescribed me more antibiotics but this time Clarithromycin 500mg twice per day.
I was hoping these would have kicked in by now but still feeling terrible and am taking these alongdside extra strength Ibuprofen and paracetamol for the pain in my chest.
I am starting to wonder if I will ever get better. I feel so low and down, I havent left the house for days and just want to sleep as I am feeling so exhausted.
Has anyone suffered from anything similar or know how long it takes to get over this... Its been over a month now and I just cant remember what it feels like to feel normal...
Sorry for the long post...

They found a bacteria in my spit called klebsiella, immune to most antibiotics and can cause pneumonia, check it out, it's a new super bug

Hi cer is there an antibiotic that works on it ? They're probably testing that now are they? Least you know what your dealing with. Are you sick long?

My lung specialist has never heard of it, so who knows if the antibiotics are going to work. They've given amoxicilline. I started coughing in juli 31016 and it kinda went down hill from there. 3 x pneumonia and then infection after infection, my lungs are nearly clear. I feel fine apart from being very tired and still coughing but no where near as bad as I was.

Oh dear Lord since July how awful for you. I'm going on since October. That's good your feeling better hopefully it's on its last leg out. Did it show on x ray or ct ? My x ray clear but my lung is certainly not clear just didn't pick it up. I'm pushing 4 ct scan and it's like pushing against a hay bale. Iv app with respiratory specialist Thursday so hope he will do one asap. Can't stick this much longer. Iv been suffering bad colds on top of bacteria in lung and just finished latest cold was feeling much more alive then I stupidly smoked a couple of cigs after none 4 months n wake with with viral symptoms again gees suffering suffering suffering why god now I realize how lucky I was with viruses gone at least that's one bug less ugh really struggling. Actually felt good Sat just have the fatigue like you with lung discomfort n difficulty to think straight. But with virus then am much worse.

Hi Paul ,
Why do you have it that long? What's story behind that it's very long?

This is the first site I have found that describes symptoms similar to what I have been experiencing for nearly 8 weeks--although mine are (thankfully) dissipating:
I came down with a horrible cold/flu after traveling; bad cough; eventually, my right rib cage began hurting horribly when I coughed or sneezed. I had to use a heating pad on my side.
The cold/flu slowly eased away, except the pain in my rib cage stayed. It lightened up a bit, then began moving around! I wonder if it's pleurisy, but that usually doesn't stay around, does it?
Nearly 8 weeks later, I still clear my throat regularly, and I still occasionally cough--it feels like it's coming from my right lung only, and the rib cage pain has moved behind my right breast.
Everywhere I look on the internet brings up lung cancer. Makes no sense, as this began with a cold/flu, has lessened quite a bit, but, jeez, I can't kick this all the way.
Any home remedy ideas? Lots of garlic? I hate going to the doctor!

Everything you have described my husband suffers too and it is truly awful to see him so despondent about his health. There does not seem to be a magic pill or treatment which halts this lung ailment. If there was, I wish we could find it, which is why I'm trawling internet right now! I wish you the best of luck with getting better.

So sorry your still feeling so poorly , at this very moment I have a really bad chest infection and pleaurisy I actually thought I was having a heart attack as the pain in my chest going through to my back was something I've never known my GP after more or less pleading with him for a home visit ( only ever had one in four years ) as he was trying to diagnose me over the phone which is normal these days , he finally agreed to call out and said he.was sorry as he could see how I'll I was and could hardly breathe with the pain , he prescribed me antibiotics and steroids for 7 days told me if I didn't feel any better in a couple of days I would probably have to go into hospital for intravenous treatment , thankfully after just two days I am feeling a little better so no hospital admission . Think you should be given stronger antibiotics and maybe a short course of steroids as they do work very quickly. I really hope you feel better soon and stamp your FEET at your GP 's it's worth it.

I know that Guila's original post was 5 years ago but wanted to share my experience in the hope that it may help others and I would people not to wait and to seek medical assistance early. About 4 and half years ago I became very ill- extremely exhausted with terrible body aches that kept me awake at night. As I was on holidays interstate I delayed seeing a doctor for more then a week thinking I was coming down with a virus and it would eventually go away. I took painkillers and just tried to keep going- I learned I was masking the effects of my illness by doing this. It was summer however in my part of the world and flus and colds would have been unusual at that time of year. By the time I arrived home it was Christmas and my local gp was unavailable. I was feeling so bad I made the decision to go to the hospital. On the way to the hospital I noticed that my cough was producing a brown flem (I later learned the brown colour is caused by blood from the lungs). I was diagnosed fairly quickly with bacterial pneumonia which can be life threatening and in my case was as I found out later that I had also developed sepsis, a complication of bacterial pneumonia- my organs were apparently shutting down and I was in septic shock. I had an extremely high temperature but was feeling very cold and my heart rate had slowed to a dangerous point. When I struggled to breathe I was asked for permission to be prepared for ICU and life support- this meant an induced coma and intubation. I was in my early 40s, had been fairly healthy and with no obvious risk factors but my body had not fought off a bacteria that usually would not have been a problem. I spent about four days in ICU and was told my condition was very precarious initially. I was in hospital a further three weeks and was readmitted soon after discharge with pleuritic effusion- a complication of pneumonia. This felt like I had been punched in the lower right hand side of my rib cage- this may be the condition some of you are describing as feeling like you've pulled a muscle.
I just want to warn people not to hesitate in seeking medical assistance and to go back to their doctor if their condition isn't getting any better. I was really lucky- if my husband had allowed me to just lay on my bed and try to go to sleep like I wanted to the day I arrived back home from my holiday, i would have gone into heart failure and died. I had no idea I was as sick as I was and my condition deteriorated extremely quickly. If you are sick and feeling worse then normal and aching badly, exhausted to the point where you feel unable to continue your normal activity and you have a productive cough (brown or green) seek medical advice immediately. Also tell those around you and make sure they are checking in with you regularly.
I am well today but it took many months to feel normal again. My treatment was extremely invasive and probably could have been avoided if I had sought medical attention at an earlier point. Shannon

Hi ,I do hope you are feeling better now and you have not been left with any bad after affects , I had plurisy and phumonia back in early June and I was put on intibiotics and steroids but it's now eight weeks since being so ill and I've never fully recovered I've just been diagnosed with COPD and have an appointment tomorrow with the nurse so just waiting to get the outcome of it all, but I've definitely not really recovered fully since June, so as you said seek medical attention straight away. Good luck.
