Taking fibre supplements at the same time as amlodipine may slightly lower the amount of medicine your body absorbs. This could potentially make the blood pressure medication less effective.
Why this happens
Soluble fibre can bind to medications in the digestive tract or slow down the rate at which the stomach empties. This can interfere with how well the amlodipine is absorbed into your bloodstream.
What you should do
You do not need to stop taking fibre, but you should try to space them out. Take your amlodipine at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after taking a fibre supplement (such as psyllium husk, Fybogel, or methylcellulose). Monitor your blood pressure regularly to ensure it remains stable.
Important precautions
Dehydration/Low fluid intake
You must drink plenty of water (at least 200ml per dose) when taking fibre supplements. Without enough fluid, the fibre can swell and cause a blockage in your throat or bowel.
Grapefruit consumption
Avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice. Grapefruit can significantly increase the level of amlodipine in your blood, making your blood pressure drop too low and increasing side effects.
Drug absorption interference
Fibre supplements can trap other medicines and stop them from being absorbed. Take your other medicines at least 1 hour before or 2 to 4 hours after taking a fibre supplement.
