What is haemochromatosis?
Dr Sarah Jarvis MBE, GP and Clinical Director of Patient.info Haemochromatosis is an inherited (genetic) disorder causing the body to absorb too much iron from the diet. The excess iron is then stored in various organs, mainly the liver. The excess iron may also be stored in the pancreas, heart, testicles (testes)/ovaries, skin and joints. The main treatment is the regular removal of blood, which helps to remove the excess iron from the body. If treatment is started early enough and before complications occur then the outlook for people with haemochromatosis is very good.
