Taking maitake mushrooms alongside atorvastatin may increase the risk of muscle-related side effects or liver irritation. It may also cause your blood sugar or cholesterol levels to drop lower than expected.
Speak to your doctor before taking atorvastatin and maitake together as combining them may increase the risk of muscle-related side effects or liver irritation.
If you decide to take both, monitor yourself closely for unusual muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, as well as signs of low blood sugar (such as dizziness or shaking).
Why this happens
Maitake contains compounds that may interfere with the liver enzymes (CYP3A4) responsible for breaking down atorvastatin, potentially leading to higher levels of the medicine in your blood.
Additionally, both substances can lower blood sugar and cholesterol, which may lead to an additive effect.
What you should do
Important precautions
Pregnancy
You must not take atorvastatin if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as it can cause serious harm to an unborn baby. Use effective contraception while taking this medicine.
Muscle disorders - atorvastatin
Seek immediate medical advice if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. In rare cases, this can lead to a serious condition called rhabdomyolysis which causes kidney damage.
Surgery
Stop taking maitake at least two weeks before any scheduled surgery because it can thin your blood and increase the risk of bleeding during or after the procedure.
Food and drink warnings
Grapefruit juice
Grapefruit juice contains compounds that can increase the level of atorvastatin in your blood. This may increase your risk of side effects, such as muscle pain or damage. Avoid drinking large quantities (more than 1.2 litres per day), though it is safest to avoid it altogether or keep intake to very small amounts.
Alcohol
While alcohol does not directly interact with atorvastatin, drinking large amounts of alcohol can increase the risk of liver problems and muscle side effects. It is best to keep your intake within the recommended limits (no more than 14 units per week).
Blood sugar-lowering foods/drinks
Maitake mushrooms may lower blood sugar levels. If you are consuming other foods or supplements that lower blood sugar, monitor your glucose levels closely to avoid hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar).

Can I take Sertraline and Fluoxetine together?
Taking sertraline and fluoxetine together significantly increases the risk of a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome. This happens because both medicines work by increasing the level of a chemical called serotonin in your brain. If levels get too high, it can cause symptoms like shivering, diarrhoea, confusion, severe muscle tightness, fever, and even seizures. Additionally, fluoxetine can slow down how your body breaks down sertraline, leading to a build-up of the drug in your system and increasing the risk of side effects.
