Michael is a community pharmacist practicing in the Midlands and South Yorkshire with more than 20 years’ experience advising on medicines and medical conditions. He has a strong background in healthcare training, having produced and delivered training courses for pharmacy teams and staff of residential care settings, including nurses. He has also contributed to pharmacy advisory boards for the management of low acuity conditions in the community.

Michael spent 6 years as an information pharmacist at head-office for a large-multiple pharmacy chain. He provided guidance and advice to pharmacists on clinical, professional and regulatory issues, developing policies and procedures and supporting delivery of clinical services.

During the Covid-19 pandemic Michael participated in a pharmacy-based vaccination clinic, delivering over 4000 Covid vaccinations to the local population during the initial roll-out. He also returned to community practice where he is currently preparing for the NHS Pharmacy First service.

Acipimox capsules
Medicines

Take acipimox capsules with, or just after, a meal. The most common side-effects are headache, flushing and indigestion. These can often occur during the first few days of treatment but soon settle. Follow carefully any lifestyle advice you have been given such as stopping smoking, avoiding drinking too much alcohol, eating a healthy diet and taking exercise. These are also an important part of managing your condition.

Ketoconazole shampoo
Medicines

For dandruff, use the shampoo twice-weekly for 2-4 weeks. To help prevent dandruff from returning, continue to use the shampoo every 1-2 weeks. For pityriasis versicolor, apply the shampoo directly to the skin patches once each day for up to five days. Leave it on the skin for 3-5 minutes before washing it off.

Formoterol inhaler
Medicines

Make sure you know how to use the inhaler device properly. If you are not sure, ask your nurse, pharmacist or doctor to show you. If your breathing gets worse or if you do not get the usual relief from the inhaler, please contact your doctor straightaway. Do not smoke. Smoking causes irritation to the lungs and will make your condition worse.

Thiamine - Vitamin B1
Medicines

Thiamine is a type of vitamin B. It is recommended as a vitamin supplement for people who cannot get sufficient vitamin B1 from their normal diet. It is unlikely to cause side-effects.

Dapsone tablets
Medicines

Dapsone will be prescribed for you by a specialist doctor. Take the tablets every day for as long as your doctor tells you to. Your course of treatment may last several months or years. If you get a rash, a high temperature, or develop any unexplained bruises or bleeding, please speak with your doctor straightaway.
