This tool is for Medical Professionals

Professional Reference tools are designed for health professionals to use. They are written by UK doctors and based on research evidence, UK and European Guidelines, so you may find the language more technical than the condition leaflets.

FRAX logo

FRAX® is a sophisticated risk assessment instrument, developed by the University of Sheffield.  It uses risk factors in addition to DXA measurements for improved fracture risk estimation.  It is a useful tool to aid clinical decision making about the use of pharmacologic therapies in patients with low bone mass. The International Osteoporosis Foundation supports the maintenance and development of FRAX®.

The FRAX® tool helps to identify people who may be at risk of developing osteoporosis. Personal details (such as height and weight, medication history, smoking history and family history) are entered to predict whether someone is at risk of developing osteoporosis in the next 10 years. The risk is expressed as a percentage: for example, 10% means 10 people out of a 100, with this level of risk, will develop osteoporosis in the next 10 years.

This information can help your doctor decide whether further action needs to be taken. This may be asking you to have a bone scan, or talking to you about measures that can help prevent osteoporosis. These may be lifestyle and dietary measures, or medication.
