This elevated take on the classic ham and cheese toastie is a sophisticated high-protein lunch option that balances rich, melted dairy with sharp, tangy accents. By using a distinct blend of mozzarella, nutty Gruyère, and aged goat’s cheese, you achieve a complex flavour profile and the perfect cheese pull. The addition of salty prosciutto and sweet bread-and-butter pickles provides a delightful contrast to the buttery, golden sourdough crust.
Preparing these sandwiches in a frying pan over a steady, medium-low heat ensures the bread develops a uniform crunch while the generous cheese filling melts thoroughly. Served alongside a fresh green salad or a bowl of tomato soup, these sandwiches offer a substantial and comforting meal. The recipe is ideal for those seeking a high-protein vegetarian-friendly alternative by simply swapping the prosciutto for extra pickles or grilled peppers.
