Taking fludrocortisone and hydrocortisone together can lead to an 'overdose' effect of steroid medication. This can cause your body to hold onto too much salt and water, leading to high blood pressure, swelling (oedema), and a loss of potassium. It can also increase the risk of side effects like stomach irritation, mood changes, and weakened bones.

Why this happens
Both medicines are types of corticosteroids. Hydrocortisone is mainly used to replace cortisol (the 'stress hormone'), but it also has some salt-retaining effects. Fludrocortisone is a very potent salt-retaining steroid. When used together, their effects on your salt and mineral balance are added together, which can lead to an imbalance.
