Taking amitriptyline with alcohol can make you feel much more drowsy, dizzy, and uncoordinated than usual. It can also slow down your breathing and affect your heart rate.

Why this happens

Both amitriptyline and alcohol are 'central nervous system depressants'. This means they both slow down brain activity. When taken together, their effects add up, making the sedative (sleep-inducing) effect much stronger and potentially dangerous.

It is best to avoid drinking alcohol while taking amitriptyline, especially when you first start the medication or if your dose has just been increased. If you do choose to drink, keep it to a very small amount and do not drive or operate machinery.
