Can I take 1.5mg and Metformin together?

Taking alcohol with metformin can increase the risk of a rare but very serious condition called lactic acidosis. It can also make you more likely to experience low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia).

Why this happens

Both alcohol and metformin can increase the levels of lactate in your blood. If these build up too much, it can cause a medical emergency. Alcohol also stops your liver from releasing glucose, which can lead to dangerously low blood sugar levels.

It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking metformin. You should never drink on an empty stomach. Seek immediate medical help if you feel very weak, have a fast heartbeat, or feel cold and dizzy, as these can be signs of lactic acidosis.
