Taking cannabis with atorvastatin may increase the amount of the medicine in your blood. This can increase your risk of experiencing side effects, particularly muscle pain, weakness, or liver problems. Additionally, both substances can cause dizziness or drowsiness, which may be worse when they are used together.

Why this happens

Cannabis (specifically CBD and THC) can interfere with the liver enzymes (CYP3A4) that your body uses to break down atorvastatin. This causes the statin to stay in your system longer and reach higher levels.

You should speak to your doctor before using cannabis with atorvastatin. If you experience any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, contact your doctor immediately. It is illegal to drive with any cannabis in your system in the UK.
