Taking St John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) can significantly lower the amount of exemestane in your blood. This may make your cancer treatment less effective and increase the risk of the cancer returning or progressing.

Why this happens
St John's Wort is a powerful 'inducer' of a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down exemestane in your body. By speeding up this process, St John's Wort causes the medicine to be cleared from your system much faster than intended.
What you should do
Back to contentsDo not take St John's Wort while you are being treated with exemestane. If you are already taking it, speak to your doctor or oncologist immediately before stopping, as they may need to adjust your treatment plan. Always check with a pharmacist before starting any herbal supplements or over-the-counter medicines.
