Taking ibuprofen (Nurofen) and ramipril together can make your blood pressure medicine less effective. More importantly, it significantly increases the risk of kidney problems and can cause your potassium levels to become dangerously high.

Why this happens
Ramipril works by relaxing blood vessels, while ibuprofen can cause the body to retain salt and water and constrict blood flow to the kidneys. When used together, they can put a lot of strain on the kidneys and prevent them from filtering waste properly.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should avoid taking ibuprofen while on ramipril unless your doctor specifically tells you to. If you need pain relief, paracetamol is usually a safer choice. If you have already taken them together and notice you are passing less urine than usual, have swelling in your ankles, or feel unusually tired, contact your GP.
