Magnesium malate may interfere with how your body absorbs Eliquis (apixaban), potentially making the blood thinner less effective. Additionally, high doses of magnesium can sometimes have a very mild blood-thinning effect of their own, which could theoretically increase the risk of bruising or bleeding when taken with Eliquis.

Why this happens
Magnesium is a multivalent cation that can bind to certain medications in the digestive tract (chelation), reducing the amount of medicine that enters the bloodstream. Furthermore, magnesium may have minor anti-platelet effects that could add to the effect of Eliquis.
What you should do
Back to contentsTo be safe, space these two out by at least 2 hours. Take your Eliquis first, then wait 2 hours before taking your magnesium supplement. If you notice any unusual bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking your prescribed Eliquis without medical advice.
